{cherry on top} katie&carl
sweetaskatie:
Voila! Katie opened the oven door, welcomed by a surge of warm scented air, and delicately grabbed the pan to place on the stove. Giddy with excitement, she tossed her mittens aside and merely stared into the delicacy of which was chocolate cake. Finally, since her employment at the café, she had managed to cook something without the fire alarm blaring throughout the entire establishment. That, for the young girl, was an accomplishment on its own – the other component to her sense of success was that the dessert seemed edible and, surprisingly, delicious. This day held potential for her request to her boss… never mind that, she pushed the thought aside, the heat will begin to dissipate from within the cake!
“Caaaaarl~♪“ She called out, holding the pan in one hand while using the other to push the door, and practically twirled towards the man. Before she allowed him to speak, she placed her creation on the counter and offered jazz hands to present the dish. “Look! I made chocolate cake without any incidents!” Katie then sheepishly stepped back and asked proudly, in contrast to her motions, “Will you pleeease with a cherry on top try a piece and tell me how it tastes? And be honest!”
With all her being did the aspiring baker wish it qualified to his standards – perhaps then he would take the mess that encompassed his kitchen with a grain of salt.

“Hm?” Carl took a moment to be pulled out from his thoughts by the singsong of his waitress, the dry tea tins he was filling apparently taking more thought than they really should. Or maybe he was too caught up in other thoughts as he was fulfilling the most mindless of tasks in the cafe. He immediately brightens at the chance to take a break, with a raise of his eyebrows in actual surprise to see a perfectly good cake placed in front of him.
“Goodness! Hmhm-- that’s wonderful, Katie!” He beams, taking a moment to glance around her to the doorway to the kitchen. He sighs some relief that there isn’t smoke following in her wake. Whew! It takes him a second to process that she’d asked for him to try it, smiling at her awkwardly as though trying to ignore the fact that he’d been looking to see if there were smoke.
“I, uh-- ah--” Pauses, looking to her sheepish smile and smiling sheepishly in return. How could he say no to that face? And taste-testing was part of the job, after all!
“Goodness, sweetie, of course-- grab me a fork?♪” He pauses to examine the cake, turning it on the counter as though preparing to judge it as a professional.
“Hm!♪ It does look very tasty! And smells very very good, actually, hmhm! But, ah--” Carl smiles, looking as though he’s about to stick his hand into something that may be honey or just bees. “Tell me first, though-- did you try-- ah, anything unusual or different with this one--?♪”
