Home. Home was the piece missing in Calvin’s life and no matter how many times he tried to fill it up with people and places, nothing felt like it truly fit. Yes, he loved the friends he had come to grown accustomed to having around. Yes, he loved the idea of the family he was apart of. And yet... Something was off. He couldn’t say on what it actually was, but the piece was slowly becoming empty again.
The friends he had weren’t anything important to him now. They were background noise, no matter how much he didn’t want to admit it. Maybe he was always going to be the one who wanted the world and then some. He now had the world and yet, it wasn’t enough for him. Nothing would ever be enough for him. Not this horrible city of LA. Not the wife he had to be only married too for a few more weeks. Not even the family he had around him. It wouldn’t be enough and maybe he’d spend the rest of his life wandering around this earth trying to find whatever it was that was missing.
Would he ever find it? Probably not. There was very little he needed in his life. After all, he wasn’t a man with many emotions and many attachments. His sister seemed happy here and all of his friends did too. He should be happy here. They call LA the city of gods. He was surely one of the gods if he had any say in it. And yet this city felt more like shit covered in glitter and drowning in perfume. He kept to himself and when he moved to the city, everyone seemed to invade his space more than usual. He assumed that was from the status his wife had and honestly, he wanted to be left alone.
Maybe that’s why he packed up a bag. This city and the people in it had driven him to finally leave. Maybe it would be only for a week or two, nothing long. Maybe it would turn into something longer as a few years. Calvin didn’t know and really, he didn’t quite care. There was something telling him to leave and so he took that first instinct and let his feet carry him to wherever he wanted to go. Who knows, he could backpack through Europe. Spend some time in Australia, India, or even China and Japan.
Calvin Rogers was never a man of importance. No one would remember his name when he was buried six feet under the ground. So, he decided to stop pretending he was worth anything. He’d blend in with the shadows and everyone else on his journey. And when he would finally come back, he’d be filled again. He’d be the Calvin Rogers people didn’t really deserve, but the one he wanted to be.
