the reason the rings of power and every other movie doesn’t look as good as lotr is because when they made lotr it was one dude’s job just to hand-make chain mail armor for like a year
One thing I feel people miss about lord of the rings is that it’s sort of……….post-apocalyptic?
Like– the world already ended, a long time ago, and the characters are surrounded by the ruins of dead countries. They spend most of their time journeying through places that are either abandoned (Moria) soon to be abandoned (Rivendell/Lorien) or half-destroyed and falling into decay (Rohan/Gondor.) The villains are creatures that Used to be Human; I feel like Lotr’s orcs/ringwraiths have more in common with zombies than they do with DnD-style orcs, because they’re a state that “normal” people enter when they’re corrupted by a supernatural force.
Even the Shire is surrounded by ruins– the ruins of watchtowers, the ruins of the old Northern Kingdom, the ruined city near the Grey Havens. The people around there have an idiom “when the king comes back” that means the same thing as an idiom like “when pigs fly”– “when a completely ridiculous improbable thing happens.” They’re so used to the disintegrated state of the world that the idea of a central government is fairy-tale-like and bizarre. They have their little mayors and thains; they don’t need anything else.
So yeah! I see people try to “modern-real-world- au” versions of Hobbiton by making it “a peaceful suburb” but to me, a modern au version of Hobbiton would be more like…….
You are a hobbit.
You don’t know much history, but you understand that there were Wars a long time ago that destroyed a great amount of life on earth.
You live in a little hole in the ground. You don’t know that long ago these holes used to be called “bunkers;” you decorate them with flowers.
When you want to say that something won’t happen, you’ll sarcastically say things “lol yeah SURE that will happen! And tomorrow pigs will fly, Parliament will come back into session, there will be a president in the White House, there will be a prime minister making speeches, and diplomats will intercede between all of them! ha! XD”
If you journey even a little outside of your home, you’ll find the ruins of old cities and skyscrapers. There are messages in the ruins that are written in languages you don’t speak. Human beings used to live here; they don’t anymore.
And you’re not supposed to leave the Shire because sometimes you’ll meet the things that used to be human, but aren’t anymore.
happy 20th anniversary to this scene and this scene only
I think the reason The Lord of the Rings’s popularity endures is because it’s the perfect story for hard times in the world. It’s escapism to a more simplistic world with idealized characters, but it also portrays the struggles of enduring hardships with sincere honesty and empathetic care. This just makes its overall optimistic message about hope and the power of love prevailing even more profound. I notice a lot of other stories have a difficult time striking a balance: they either try to be overly realistic to the point of aimless nihilism OR just completely unrealistic fluff made from a place removed of earnestness - both can leave people feeling empty. The Lord of the Rings manages to perfectly hit the sweet spot between escapism and realism for a story so beautifully from the heart and truly cathartic as a result. It doesn’t simply leave you with quickly fleeting emotions of sadness or happiness, but rather an enduring feeling of wholeness.

Aragorn: That's the spirit!
Gimli: OH FUCK WHERE??

Hi everyone,
I found an article that goes over masking and ADHD. The article goes over the following topics:
Masking can look like a lot of different things
Masking is a learned behavior
Masking can leave you exhausted
There may be different versions of the mask
Unmasking is a sign of safety
Masking can delay diagnosis
Masking can be unlearned, but it’s a process
I will leave the article down below so you all can check it out. I hope many of you find this helpful.
If you have ADHD or know someone who does, you might have heard of masking, but what is it? How does masking affect those with ADHD?

"You are no longer licensed to use the software," Adobe told them.
Friendly reminder that GIMP does pretty much everything Photoshop does, and it’s 100% free. Fuck DRM and the license culture, we have plenty of open source options available to us as a consumer.
Lightworks is a freeware video editor on par with Premiere
Blender is an excellent freeware 3D renderer, possibly better than After Effects
Lightzone to replace Lightroom
Inkscape to replace Illustratr
Audacity to replace Audition (I also received a free version of Pro Tools with my Scarlett Solo audio interface)
If Adobe is going to be greedy shitheads, then fuck ‘em. Don’t use their stuff. Freeware can be just as good, if not better, than Adobe CC.

Reblog to save an artist.
oh jEEZ
I will keep saying this: GIMP sucks butts.
- Medibang Paint and Fire Alpaca for more cartoon style illustration
- Krita for painting
- Clip Studio Paint (not free, but often on sale and cheap even at full price) is better than PS for art and I’m about to cut adobe entirely. Even does some photo editing.
- Paint Tool SAI (again, not free but cheap) old but good, there’s a ton of hacked copies around too. Not hard to get for free.
- Open Tunez for animation.
I’m currently using Affinity Photo and it’s a great Photoshop alternative. One time fee only and it’s not really expensive, plus supports PSD formats. Free trial available too! Davinci Resolve for video editing is amazing as well! :)
Another great art program to include in the list is the completely free, no download, browser recreation of photoshop, Photopea! It has the potential/customizability to be as robust as a full copy of photoshop while also being perfectly accessible to anyone looking to just do some quick edits with no strings attached.
Also, heads up to anyone using it,
As of July 5th 2021, Audacity is now considered a potential spyware security risk,
so please approach it with caution and do some research on the situation as things progress.
i just want everyone to be aware you can and should pirate adobe products. people will always say “buy this alternate version” but if you work as a professional you know for a fact this is basically impossible since every manufacturer in the world uses adobe products. absolutely use free software–audacity is now spyware, and clip studio paint is in agreement with amazon, etc–for yourself but if you work with other people then pirate adobe. Just pirate the program.
Please for the love of God just pirate stuff I, am begging you. Piracy has fallen out of mind for so many people for no reason. Stop using shitty alternatives to good products and just pirate the good products.
It is impossible to overstate how infuriatingly shit Gimp is
Gimp makes every toolbar be a separate window on your taskbar
Gimp is not a good alternative if you enjoy any amount of workflow tidiness
i always really love looking at concept art for the lion king because the majority of it is honestly drop dead gorgeous, like oh my god look at this sh*t
and then the rest is just
