I realize as I get older that I love backlight and the anonymity of the resulting photo. In the early days of social media (and maybe still to this day), the photos that were most popular were the anonymous ones. Seeing an actual face in a photo becomes a more definitive "yes or no" proposition for the viewer, depending on whether they like that face or not. So, it makes sense. I also like imagining that some part of the appeal of the anonymous is that we project ourselves into that photo as well -- that it's so much easier to envision ourselves as the subject or protagonist in some story where the crucial details are diffused by overwhelming light.
