Winter’s Love

Why does the season’s first snowfall always feel like a first kiss? 

Hypothesis #1: Because it triggers the hibernation instinct that puts any and all sensibility and rationality into an extended, deep sleep. 

Hypothesis #2: Because it is soft and clean and unfamiliar. 

Hypothesis #3: Because it mesmerizes and is dizzying, and you hope that it will never end.

Vulnerable, crawling, exposed and threadbare. Against all odds it has made it thus far, and intact, for the most part.

Wandering, tired and uncertain, it readies itself for something transformative. Now swaddled in silk, it is nestled inside, warm, numb. Instinctively, it knows this is not the last stage. This is not how it all ends. Not even close to its final act.

And there is no looking back from here, no devolution - for it will soon have wings to fly. Soar as high as seabirds at dawn.
