When I picked up the phone and was asked to do a shoot with Manson, I replied instantly: “Manson?! A shoot with Marilyn Manson?! How cool is that?!” Seems I replied a bit too instantly. “Sorry Richard,” said the voice on the other line, “I said Hanson not Manson.” No disrespect to Hanson at all, it was just that Marilyn Manson instantly conjured up a vision.
I owe the success of this photo, at least in part, to Hanson’s record label: it sent me a copy of the band’s latest cd, Underneath, well before the shoot. When I first listened to it, I was struck by the band’s greatly matured sound and songwriting. If this was the band that recorded “Mmmm Bop,” the sound of the new cd was definitely one of growth. With the knowledge of this in mind, I anticipated a more adult set of Hanson brothers and planned a more “classic” approach to my shoot. Which, brings me right back to the lith printing process. The pose, the lighting and the final printing process are all part of the artistic intent.
The shoot was conducted at the Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto on May 17, 2004. This particular photo was used on the CD single cover of “Lost Without Each Other”. #hanson #taylorhanson #zachanson #isaachanson #hanson25 #richardbelandphotography
