We want to share with you that our lovely matron of Cantrell Gallery, Helen was unfortunately exposed to Covid during the time we were closed for the holiday. Clarke and Cindy were not exposed and have tested. We have reported to the Arkansas Health Department and are following all protocols. Given our current situation and all things considered, we are going to cancel the after-hours showing of our next featured exhibit we had planned next week. We are still going to display “Into the Woods”, watercolor paintings by Barry Lindley, January 14 – March 5. We encourage all to see the exhibit in person during regular hours, Monday through Saturday, 10 to 5:00 and on our YouTube channel we will post a narrated, video tour of the show that will be available soon. Check back in on Facebook and Instagram in the coming days, to see more sneak peeks of pieces in this show. We are sticking with masks at all times in the gallery, as an added layer of protection, and we appreciate all cooperation with this plan. We are planning an opening for an exhibit of recent works by Kae Barron. There will be a reception on Friday, November 5, 6:00 to 8:00 for “Gossamer”. The artist will be present for this casual event. Everyone will be wearing masks. Mark your calendar now, and plan to see this show. “Riding down a Little Rock road one sunny day, my attention was snared by a large quantity of shining power lines. Seeing this, I thought about spider webs, which made me think about baby "parachuting" spiders. Thinking about baby spiders launching themselves into the world, brought Walt Whitman's poem, "A Noiseless Patient Spider" to mind. (The poem is below.) These thoughts formed a loose theme for this exhibit. The exhibit contains paintings and drawings. She has enjoyed drawing, painting and sculpture most of her life. Her work is in private and public collections and has been exhibited and won awards in local, regional and national juried shows. “Gossamer” will continue through January 8. As people start to travel by air again, we wanted to share ideas with you about getting any unframed art home safely. You can always ask the person you are purchasing the piece from if they have a stiff board that is a little larger than the art. If the art is paper and you have a thick book or magazine with you that is large enough, slip the art inside. Clarke and Cindy went to Philadelphia and they had some take-out pizza. The lid of the box had no food on it, and it was easily fashioned into a safe spot for their small souvenir they found in the shop of the art museum. We are pleased to be hosting “Common Beauty”, an exhibit of recent paintings by Megan Lewis, opening on Friday, September 10, 6-8:00. Plan on joining us for a casual meet and greet. Cantrell Gallery is a facemask wearing area! “For me painting is a balance of practiced principles and intuition. Together, these two create a kind of visual poetry. It’s more cerebral than you might think. Good design often involves a lot of trial and error, but it’s worth wrestling for! Applying color is a bit like juggling several balls at once. With each brushstroke, the artist must judge the value, hue, temperature and intensity as it relates to neighboring colors. I love the moment when I know I’ve got something - when loveliness begins to emerge on the canvas. It never gets old! I think I will always love it. Ordinary or common things can become extraordinary in the right Light or in a carefully constructed environment. The artist often sees what is overlooked by others. Stopped in her tracks - she pulls the car over to capture a breathtaking design within the contours of a landscape, while everyone else drives by. The artist is likely to be more intrigued by the interplay of shapes and colors created by the bric-a-brac in a market, than by the objects themselves. Deep brooding colors tucked within the shadows, hidden from the camera, are a sumptuous feast for the artist’s naked eye! This collection of paintings does not fall within a theme, it makes no social or political statements, nor does it try to shock or surprise you. Cantrell Gallery will be closed for Labor Day weekend. The current featured exhibit has been publicized as continuing through September 4 but plans have changed and the gallery will be closed, Saturday, September 4 through Monday, September 6. If you had plans to see John Wooldridge’s show, “Done Got Lost” on this Saturday, or if you were wanting to bring in or pick up a framing project, we apologize for the inconvenience! There’s still time to see Wooldridge’s exhibit. Hours this week are: 10-5:00, through Friday Hours next week are: 10-5:00 Tuesday through Saturday. As we remember our founding father this time of year, it’s so fun to keep on selling his artwork. We have sold several pieces this week. Thanks to N. Scott, 4/8/39 – 8/24/10, for dreaming big and imagining Cantrell Gallery over 51 years ago. One of the missions that was most important to him was to make people happy. Just yesterday we had the pleasure of helping facilitate restoration of art and the client was moved to joyful tears when she saw the finished result. What a wonderful business to be in and be able to connect art lovers with those who create art. People often have an emotional connection with the items they bring in here for framing and we enjoy taking pride in the utmost care in handling their treasured objects. It seems like a wonderful time to take stock of your surroundings and see if you have something stored away that needs to be displayed and properly preserved. Or maybe you simply are noticing that you have a naked wall that is indecent and you want to dress it up with local/ regional art. Did you know it’s length and breadth form a perfect square? How might I set and light it to relay its loveliness to others? These are things I ask myself. This collection of paintings does not fall within a theme, it makes no social or political statements, nor does it try to shock or surprise you. The large, black and gold piece by N. Scott that had been hanging on our front wall found it’s forever home, and couldn’t stay and play with the others for the rest of the exhibit, so we searched and found a replacement piece. Here it is, with the title: “Ms Dupree went on her bi-annual, uptown Rock City shopping spree and racked up quite a large sum on each and every card, so ole M. had a lot of debt on his brain when Pierre the pitbull made and allusive inference that all they needed to do was to destroy the cards and the amount owed would disappear. Oh, to be so naive. But isn’t that partly (or wholly why we adore this bashful beast?)
