Β Β Β Β β Λβ¦ β° WHEN CARL OPENED the door, wendyβs smile automatically grew across her features and she waved at him in excitement.Β β mrs. fredricksen.Β β, she greeted him in return, the smile never once fading. stepping inside of his home when he invited her in, the brunette replied to his comment with mild excitement still in her voice:Β β oh i love tea.Β β, and she looked over her shoulder at the man to throw him a kind smile.Β β if itβs no bother, then iβd love some.Β β, wendy continued with a nod.
one thing carl truly admired about wendy was how polite she was. it made her seem older, wiser than she was. she didnβt act her age, which is something he enjoyed. she certainly wouldnβt be welcome in his and ellieβs home if she didnβt deserve to be there.Β βnot a bother, no worries.β he reassured gently.Β βmake yourself comfortable, iβll pour you a cup and bring it over.β he suggested, motioning for her to take a seat in the living room while he exited to the kitchen, returning moments later with two mugs in his hand, the strings of each tea bag hanging carefully over the edge.

βi will,β she nodded softly returning the smile, it was nice to see him smile, even if it was for a moment.Β it was slightly ironic, neither of them were exactly the most social, yet violet liked his presence. sometimes silence was a good thing. she knew carl wasnβt exactly the way he used to be, but at times she could see the man tryΒ and she appreciated it.Β βitβs been a while, iβm sorry i havenβt come around beforeβ when was the last time she did? truth was, she didnβt want to bother him, even when heβd say otherwise..Β βif you donβt mind?β the implication violet had anything to do was amusing, so as he invited her to stay she agreed.Β
carl felt as though violet understood him in a way. sheβd lost ellie too, and maybe it wasnβt because of the loss, but she was quietΒ and she was kind, both of which were qualities that carl deeply appreciated in a person. she would be one of the very last people still welcome in carl and ellieβs home whenever she pleased.Β βitβs okay, really.β carl truly didnβt mind. sure, the loneliness got to him but itβs not like he expected violet to make time out of her week to come and see him. "of course not.β he said politely, shutting the door behind her. he motioned for her to follow him into the kitchen, where she could sit while he made them a cup of tea. his kettle was already sitting on the stove, it simply needed to be refilled and boiled, which he made quick work of.Β βhow have you been?β he asked conversationally as he set the kettle back onto the stove.

βI mean, I couldnβt disagree with you more. What good would it do me to spend a good chunk of money on renovating your house for free? It just doesnβt make any sense to me.β Ken politely combated quietly. The last thing he needed was full-on argument with the man he was trying to win over.Β ββ¦Maybe.β Ken admitted, fidgeting with one of the metal buttons nervously. Everything felt so judge-y with Carl.Β βFine, maybe not cry, given if itβs a splat here and there. But, a full on spill? Iβd be a little bummed out.β Ken explained for somewhat gleefully following the other man into the very outdated looking house. It was incredibly charming, but it had the possibility of being so much more! And yet he stayed put in the parlor, trying to dissect every detail of Carlβs life from the room around him.Β βThank you,β He murmured kindly before taking the glass from him.Β βI take it, then, that you havenβt touched a thing in here since, hm?β Ken asked, again, rather quietly. It felt oddly disrespectful to be his usual loud and boisterous self around Carl in his most sacred house.Β βI gotta sayβ¦the more I look at itβ¦the more charming I find it.β
carl ignored kenβs comments. no matter how many years passed, ken was not going to lay a finger on his and ellieβs home. there was simply no wayΒ to convince carl otherwise. ken was simply too far out, too different for carl to comprehend. they were opposites, in nearly every single way.Β βit doesnβt matter anyways. you wonβt be getting any paint on them here, so i wonβt have to deal with you or your tears.β he quickly shut the man down, desperately wishing he could somehow force him to leave without coming across as terribly rude.Β βno, i havenβt and i donβt plan on it.β carlβs gaze stayed on ken, worried that at a momentβs notice he might start switching things around.Β βgood. itβs charming. so youβll leave me and our house alone now?β

βyou frown a lot, carl,β she mused, her gaze locked on the trees and how the wind rustled the leaves.Β βwell come on, itβs a beautiful day, how can you be grumpy right now?β rapunzel listened to his words, knowing he was right, she shouldnβt care what other people thought of her but itβs something she was working on.Β βiβm still trying to work on that. and yes, you do have to stay and the reason is, because itβs an off day, meaning weβre not doing the usual and your routine is something you desperately need to get out of.β she couldnβt help but let out a laugh, the back of her palm covering her lips as she did so.Β βyou indebted to me, iβm honored.β
βyes, i do.β carl agreed simply.Β βyou smile a lot, rapunzel.β he mimicked back to her, glancing at her before his eyes followed hers up towards the trees.Β βi have plenty of reason to be grumpy.β he didnβt see the world through her eyes. ever since ellie had died, it seemed all the color had been sucked away from his life. instead of the bright greens and blues that should fill the scenery on such a lovely summer day, everything just seemed bland. the sky had a few too many clouds for his liking and the sunlight coming through the trees was too bright for his eyes.Β βi like my routine.β he muttered, even though he knew it was a lie. he hated his routine. he hated that heβd let himself get stuck in an endless, miserable cycle because carl knew it was the last thing ellie would ever want for him.Β βi was being sarcastic.β he remarked, sending a glare her way in an attempt to put a stop to her laughter.Β

B didnβt need to be told twice. Immediately, she pulled a small photo album from her bag and flipped through the pages carefully β finally coming across the page where the note was safely stored. She took extreme care with sliding it out of the protective casing, handing it to Carl without a second thought.Β βLike I said, it was just a thank you card,β she explained,Β βbut you start realizing the importance of the little things when someone passes. Iβm just glad I can give you something else to remember her by. I may not be an expert on love, but I could tell what you two had was the real deal. Sheβd want you to have this, not me.β
carl took the card gently in his hands, as if it would turn to dust at the slightest press. every new little thing heβd found over the past two years had brought her back to him, even momentarily. he thought heβd run out of things of ellieβs to discover and cherish, but there was one more. his eyes were only torn from her handwriting on the outside of the thank you note when she spoke again.Β βno, itβs more than that. thank you.β his voice had a sort of lifeΒ to it, much more than what most got to hear from him nowadays.Β βit means the world to me.β he said quietly, he wanted to say more but he didnβt know how, couldnβt quite formulate the words he wanted to say.Β βi donβt mean to be rude.β carl said quickly, stepping away from the doorway that he so often guarded. βif you want to, you can come in.βΒ

I have this strange feeling that Iβm not myself anymore. Itβs hard to put into words, but I guess itβs like I was fast asleep, and someone came, disassembled me, and hurriedly put me back together again. That sort of feeling.
