Vlad stared at the tincture before he downed it gagging. According to every doctor he had the worlds worst case of Anemia. He took his steak rarer than most would and his canines were far more prominent than others but that was fine. His skin burned easier in the sun that was fine too! He didnât have a job outside so he could avoid that. Life was good, he made decent pay enough to cover expenses and a bit to put away for the rainy day or when his health bill was too much. Fruit helped.... that was the part the doctors couldnât explain, why the fruit alleviated the symptoms. He had always been pale and stick like, but he figured he just couldnât keep on weight.
Sometimes he had nightmares, ones that passed through his mind and stayed in the far back. Visions of himself soaked in blood, the bodies so many bodies, the smell of fire, brimstone and everything laid to waste. A firey crown perched over his head and a cry of anguish from his lips as he sat back upon a twisted throne and looked on at his work before him. Made for a good DnD plot.
His service dog was an enormous fluffball named Cerberus, though he didnât start out so big, what had once been a five pound fluff had become a hundred thirty pound mass of muscle and fluff. Cerberus was a very protective dog and while he says that he saved Cerberus it was the other way around. He still thinks it was a dream, there was no way that the dogâs mouth unhinged and swallowed a gun.
Days passed the same, either working at the Bar, tending his bees, or playing video games till the crack of dawn pierced his red-eyed gaze. He attended the local university and was making his way in getting a doctorate in History. Having been praised for his writing and essays. The most common was, âyou must have lived there in a past life!!!â He chuckled but honestly his dreams were rather vivid of things he shouldnât know. He specifically had latched onto history of Eastern Europe.
Vlad currently was shaking a martini up at his job, dressed like a bard he acted as bartender. For a twenty dollar tip one could have him sing from a choice of songs that were provided on a easel next to the jar. Songs like âWhat is Love?â, to âCareless Whisperâ, all the way to âBad Romanceâ. It was a busy night and the sounds of rolling dice filled the air.
Fabian gave up his struggle and pouted a bit he still didn't quite believe him, adoption? He'd known Vlad for an hour there was no way someone just found a kid and adopted them on the spot that didn't even happen in movies. Besides what if he didn't want to be adopted?
"I barely know you, how do you think you could be my dad?" Fabian asked him there wasn't as much accusation in his tone this time more morbid curiosity than anything
"you'll regret it once you get to know me or you'll ignore me like carmilla does."
"you know there isn't even a police report out on this kid?" Layla asked coming in wearing power rangers PJs she looked up pulling her headphones off
"Ava texted me, there's nothing on him"
âI donât but, I donât think you should be left to the adoption agency either, youâre a vampire, there isnât a supernatural adoption agency. Most donât know how to care for a vampire child. I am a vampire who was once a vampire child.â Vlad looked up and his heart just broke. âThen there is no way in hell I am letting her take him. Fabian, you donât have to be adopted by me but at least consider it? You wonât go back to her if I do, I can assure you that. If I donât it will be harder if not impossible to keep you from her. CPS only does so much and with how wealthy she is she could pay the courts to be in her favor.â This was a lot to say to a little kid. âI know I only just met you but, I want to keep you safe.â
Fabian hesitated, shuffling his feet
"you could apply to be his foster parent" Layla pointed out to him "it'll look better on the application for adoption when the time comes as well, a social worker will be assigned to the case to keep a closer eye on him and carmilla plus you'll get to keep him" Layla said as she sat on the couch that was once his hiding place as Fabian definitely seemed sick to his stomach he was more than a little overwhelmed because if everything happening far to fast
Fabian sat on the floor and pulled his knees to his chest as he covered his ears and shut his eyes tight which had Layla putting her things down
"ok panicking isn't good" Layla said as fabian started crying and trying to calm himself down
"I'll get him some water and maybe w blanket, you try to ground him so he doesn't freak, find some meditation videos on your phone" Layla said to him before she left vaguely reminiscing of Vlad doing similarly when he was a child as well
Vlad did as she said and showed Fabian, he hadnât meant to overwhelm the child. He was always the one who was quick on the draw and never thought of how things needed to take time he wasnât going to adopt that day as it was. But he was having Will look into the legal side of things after all strange boy who is a vampire found on the streets. He wouldnât make it if he was left to his own devices. As for Carmilla he hoped he never met her. âFabian, Iâm sorry. Here watch this.â He held the video where the boy could see it.
Fabian peaked out and saw the videos with pretty music and jelly fish a moment later Layla came back and wrapped him in the blanket she found, it was so soft and squishy Layla out her arms around him and squeezed him tight remembering comforting Vlad in a similar way when they were younger. Fabian listened and slowly calmed down until he was almost asleep his head slumping over to rest on vlad
"better?" Layla asked Fabian nodded
"good when you're ready we can all talk this over one step at a time ok?" Layla asked looking between both Vlad and Fabian
Vlad nodded, ârest ok?â He smiled. Nothing was going to get done right away these things had to take time and in the mean time they would make sure he was cared for and safe. he hadnât meant for it to seem so sudden and to confuse him, let alone overwhelm him.
Fabian didn't argue and his eyes dropped shut Layla smiled and looked at Vlad
"next time maybe give it a few days" Layla suggested to him with a smile
