Inspiration for thesis
I draw and paint sometimes.
Inspirations
Every week seems to come with new and evolving ideas around my topic, which so far seems to be collective documentation of a generation. That said, I searched for inspirations in the media to see how we are already documenting the "now" besides the obvious newspaper and channels, social network feed, and other. My topic is revolving around collecting documentation through these sources but establishing it as history would, determining what these current events mean to our generation and what patterns we have established as a generation for the next ones to come.
The first cool bit of inspiration I found was a news feed called:
Now This News
Now This News is a startup in NYC that collects videos and news from all over the web archive and brings together really short videos that compile the general news and captivating shots. It's the fast way of updating yourself on the news, for people who don't have time to even turn on the TV in the morning. The website posts about 30 videos a day and the team is constantly aware from 6am to 8pm of traveling news.
I found this really inspiring because my first step towards documenting our present "history" would be to start physically documenting what is going on. With so much news outlets already out there, it was a relief to see someone(s) do it successfully. It also taught me that not everything can be recorded and presented; sometimes some news is left out either because another story took its place or it was just not caught on time. The company also does a good job at user friendly design. The time of the videos, the images captured, and even the very useful captions are all things taken into consideration for quick and easy mobile or web access. While my approach will be more long term, Now This shows the possibilities of short term news collection.
The Library of Congress
I believe most academic teachers are always mentioning the library of congress as a great resource for either research or images. I have never gone until recently. There are many websites that are committed to archiving past documents but many lead you into other websites that archive them more and many "documents" are just transcripts of the originals. The LOC shows images in a cohesive way through organization and display and gives an immediate feeling for the past of the images.
Digital archiving is something I would like to include in my project because for one, it is for the future generations which will definitely be more technologically more based than we already are. Also, it is easy to add to it; as more information collects, the bigger the archive, the fuller it is of identifiable content. Using these digital archives as a look-see is a great way to see what they are doing that I WANT to do and what they are doing that I DONT WANT to do. I can also see how I can add to them to focus my concept in.
Generation Y Project
This is probably the closest thing to what I to do because it the most personalized. Gen Y Project is created by Chorus Creative, a design agency based in Connecticut. The Chorus is you and you participate to create the project. The slogan of the project is "Every generation needs a new revolution." Young people were asked the question: As a member of the Y Generation, what do you have to offer/hope to accomplish? They drew their answers on a sign and sent them.
This is a wonderful look at how one project identifies a generation and gives everyone the same collective experience that is then visualized through individual efforts. If you had to get an idea of Generation Y, you'd see what type of people they are, what they want, and how they express it to get an understanding of their background as a whole. I'd like to push this to include already established experiences in our past and that are happening right now to identify the generation through culture, geography, and time.
