What high school taught me was that you can never start a sentence with a conjunction. I also grew to learn that you may find yourself crying on your bathroom floor wondering why you ever trusted him. What high school taught me was that you must memorize the quadratic function at all costs. I also grew to learn that when your best friend cancels your plans to kiss your boyfriend it’s okay to tell her that it’s not okay. What high school taught me was that Abraham Lincoln was the 14th president of the United States. I also grew to learn sometimes it’s better to be known as a bitch than the girl who let you walk all over her. What high school taught me was that dolphins are some of the most intelligent animals on the planet. I also grew to learn that one day you will be driving and an old song will play. And it will remind you that even though you weren’t okay then you’re more okay now and it was all worth it. I never learned how to dissect a frog, I never mastered the concept of trigonometry. I never perfected how to write an argumentative essay. But I grew to learn to love others for who they are. To be okay with myself though others may not be. To spend time with my family because they were often all I had. To stand up, when all I wanted to do was sit down. I love what I’ve become. And that’s something I taught myself.
