Life has been different for me hence why I barely post. But I still DIY! Here’s a new project I’m doing.
I made my own straight jacket because they’re reselling for hundreds of dollars. Let me show ya’ll how I did it :3 The inspiration I had for my jacket was the Tripp NYC straight jacket, and the Lip Service Straight Jacket. Some other inspirations were generally the visual kei style and a little bit of archive fashion. Hot tip: I like to look on Grailed for pieces to take inspiration from. They typically have better, more in depth photos, and some have measurements which can be pretty useful if you want to replicate the fit of a garment you’re trying to rip off from.
For the pattern, I used this one off of Etsy. I almost exclusively use Etsy patterns because I can own them digitally, though I encourage you all to check thrift stores too. I’ve found some pretty interesting ones.
Since the great fall of my mommy Joann’s, honestly I’m still depressed about it. Luckily I bought yards of black canvas before she left us. I maybe only paid for interfacing and notions such as buckles and D-rings.
Once the base was completed, I went ahead and added cutout pockets in the shapes of crosses. Here’s a tutorial on how to do it. You can do almost any shape, I did mine as crosses. They’re not the most functional pockets, but for cool factor I let it slide.
Next came the back of the jacket. None of the references of the stylized jacket I wanted showed the back, so I instead referenced real straight asylum jackets and kinda picked and chose what I wanted to add. I settled with two straps, in the shape of a cross to bring in the pocket motif, but the bottom half of the vertical strap is only sewed partly on so I can thread my arms through, or that my bf can carry me like a kitten/j. I also added a D ring to the top so that it could be hung from a coat hook.
The straps on the front were a challenge even though it looked super simple—only since there are only so many sizes of roller buckles to use and I had to wait on shipping to really know if my pattern for them worked out. I left out the wrist straps, only since it would take away attention from the front (not because I was actually super fucking lazy lol). Don’t be afraid to ask me about supplies, sewing tips, etc—I’ve been sewing since I was eleven.
And it’s done! I’m really excited to wear this piece to the club, I’ve been going as fem a lot to these events and I think it would be an awesome piece to style masc. Thank you all for reading :)
