Cavillers

Cavillers was a songwriting and recording project by former members of Sunderland based punk band Broken Few. Over the course of two self-recorded and self-released EPs, they sought to refine their blend of contemplative lyrics with precise, melodic punk rock.

SYRTIS MAJOR E.P. RELEASED JANUARY 09TH 2016

It took us longer than anticipated, but we are pleased to announce the release of our new EP, Syrtis Major. This is the final record to be captured in the historic Nile Street practice space following our eviction this summer after a 9 year residency. As such, it holds a special significance for us. Hello. Its been a long time since our last update. I can only put it down to how insanely busy this past year has been. But while progress has been slow, we have been busy making sustained efforts over the past few months to practice up a new batch of four songs.

On Thursday last week, we were finally in a position to hit record. We tracked most of the drums in one day, but captured a few extra takes on Friday to make sure we had done each of the songs justice. After a protracted period of setting up, the process was actually pretty smooth. In a week or so, I’ll return to start adding guitars and vocals. The hope is to get the record mixed and mastered for a release in September/October.

That’s all for now. I’ll try to update this blog more in the coming weeks.

INTERIM REPORT #2

Over the past couple of weeks we have been hard at work on the next set of songs which we hope to record in mid-late summer. We headed down to our practice space to complete the preliminary drum arrangements (and to eat vegan toasted sandwiches from the Good Apple Café) on Thursday. Satisfied with the results, I spent this afternoon adding some rudimentary guitars. After a quick mix, its sounding great. A bit of a contrast to the last song, this one is far more melodic and decorative on guitar. Maybe the next record won't be quite so heavy after all.

In other news, he good folks over at Hope Show were good enough to play 'An Article of Faith' on their radio show last week, alongside an assortment of other amazing bands. You can head over to the Radio Active International website to listen to the entire thing.

REBLOG: ANTIMANIFESTOMUSIC

3 or 4 years ago a new band from Sunderland appeared on the scene playing a super mix of melodic punk and fast hardcore, they were called Broken Few.  They released a demo, split 7" and a full length, toured the UK/EU a bunch (loads of gigs with our very own Shields Up too)... then they just disappeared.  It was a shame.

Greg reappeared with Bear Trade, but now Lee and Jonathan are back with a new band too - Cavillers.  Picking up where Broken Few left off playing technical and anthemic punk rock.  It's basically very awesome!

INTERIM REPORT #1

Much has occurred since our last communiqué. I am going to break form for a moment and express thanks to everyone who has streamed or downloaded the New Puritans record on bandcamp. The response has greatly surpassed our meagre expectations. In case you missed it, the whole thing is still available here, for free.

Over the past month, I managed to source a new guitar and am at last able to (partially) retire the beat-up piece of junk I have been tolerating for years. It will be nice to be able to stay in tune at practice from now on. This week, we headed down to our practice space on Nile Street to begin to assemble demos for the next release. Here's a photo of the spectre across the street that stares right into our building. We're hoping to keep the momentum going and to record again sometime in the early summer. There are lots of ideas flying around, and surprisingly, things seem to be taking a heavier turn this time around.

We made this record all by ourselves, with substandard and often failing equipment. That said, we are pleased with what we have managed to capture, even if it did demand a lot of time and perseverance. We will post about our future endeavours on this blog, and you can follow along on the various other services listed to the left.

No plans to perform live. No time for morons. I'm outta here! You shoulda killed me last year.
