It's a King Records Potpourri This Weekend!

In honor of the 75th anniversary of King Records this month, the last special I'm producing has a potpourri of topics from a look at the Tok

Online radio transmission alert! 🗼🚨 As part of WVXU’s special programs for King Records Month 2018, “A King Records Potpourri” features the Tokyo Happy Coats and the interview I did with WVXU’s Dellan Stokesbary about the band. The Tokyo Happy Coats was a band comprised of the five Hakomori sisters, Eiko, Shoko, Keiko, Tomiko and Ruriko, who started in Japan in the mid-1950s and later came to the U.S. in 1964. The Tokyo Happy Coats recorded for King Records in 1970, and the label would release two singles and two LPs by the band.

45 Friday: Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, “What You Gave Me” b/w “How You Gonna Keep It (After You Get It)”, Tamla T 54187, 1969. . Never judge a record by its label...plus always *listen* to a record if something is odd about it. This 45 is an example of a misprint. When I first got it, I noticed that each side’s label had different catalog numbers, “T 54187” and “T 54190”. Usually 45s have the same catalog number on each label. I thought, well, this could be an “odd bird” 45, with one duet by Gaye/Terrell and one solo by Gaye, and I filed it away. . [Buzzer sound] Wrong. After *listening* to the 45, I learned the actual track on the side labeled as “How Can I Forget” is really “What You Gave Me”, performed by Gaye/Terrell. This side was mislabeled, thus, it is considered a misprint in vinyl record jargon. The music for this 45 is correct, but the one label is wrong. 45 Friday: Carol Lorenzo, “I’ll Love You More Tomorrow” b/w “Lonely Honolulu”, O Ka La Records OKS 102, 1983. Mellow lounge straight from lovely 1980s Hawaii. I don’t know much about Ms. Lorenzo, though I believe she produced a hula instructional video. Perfect 45 for a cold winter day, a bad day at work, or both. 45 Election Day: Jun Mayuzumi, “Yuzuki” b/w “Miracle”, Capitol Records CP-1031, Japan, 1968. I voted...for Jun! Jun Mayuzumi (1948- ) is a Japanese singer and actress, most renowned for her pop music in the late 1960s. “Black Room” is probably her most celebrated song, but I like “Angel Love” as well. 45 Friday: Mary Saenz, “I Waited” b/w “Let Me Be Your Baby”, Dot 45-16601, 1964. A new arrival, as in today-new, and we’re zooming out to include the company sleeve. Saenz, a singer born and raised in Arizona, released just a few singles in the early to mid-1960s, performing in California and Las Vegas, but sadly, never caught on nationally. I think she was a model, and maybe a beauty pageant queen. If one searches YouTube, one will quickly find her performance on the TV show “Shivaree” in 1965. Things found in records: Marion Gaines Singers, “Lord Here I Am”, King Records KS G3-1114, promo, 1971. Besides finding straight-up cold, hard cash in a LP jacket, how about an original, autographed promotional photo? When I got this in the mail, I checked to make sure the LP was not in splinters (the LP arrived OK). As I looked over the album jacket, something slid half-way out. 45 Friday: Tammy Montgomery, “If I Would Marry You” b/w “This Time Tomorrow”, Checker 1072, 1964. This post is in honor of Phil Chess, who, along with his brother Leonard, founded Chess Records in Chicago. Mr. Chess passed away on October 18, 2016, aged 95. Though I don’t have one Chess record (I know, shame on me), I have a record on one of its subsidiaries, Checker. Tammy Montgomery, a singer, was born in Philadelphia. She recorded for the labels Scepter, Wand, Try Me, and Checker. However, she is more known for her work when she signed with Motown, took the stage name Tammi Terrell, and recorded many duets with Marvin Gaye. Motown released only one LP of her solo material, “Irresistible”, in 1968. 45 Friday: Blinky, “I Wouldn’t Change The Man He Is” b/w same, Motown M 1134, promo, 1969. Yes, it’s a second 45 Friday in a row where the artist’s name ends in “-nky”. Last week it was Spanky Wilson. This week it’s Blinky. Blinky, a.k.a. “Miss Heartaches”, a.k.a. (real name) Sondra Williams, was born in Oakland, California and grew up in Los Angeles. She started her singing career in gospel music. Her first gospel LP, “Hark The Voice”, was released on the Atlantic label in 1967 (of which I have a copy). She was signed later by Motown. “I Wouldn’t Change The Man He Is” is a soul ballad with excellent piano during the verses. There’s evidently a lot more of Blinky’s Motown material that is still unreleased to this day, so…#freeblinkyfromthemotownvaults

45 Friday: Spanky Wilson, “The Last Day Of Summer” b/w “Love Is Like An Old Old Man”, Mothers Records & The Snarf Company 1300, circa 1969. This one is a little early...the last day of summer this year is September 21. Wilson is a vocalist who floats easily between jazz, soul, and funk. If you don’t know who Spanky Wilson is, then stop now and *educate* yourself. Go to Google, or go agitate the reference librarian at your local library. This release shows off her cool jazz talent. 45 Friday: Astrud Gilberto, “Come Softly To Me/Hushabye” b/w “Lillies By Monet”, Verve VK-10580, promo, 1968. Gilberto, one of the royalties of jazz and bossa nova vocalists, gives her version of the song “Come Softly To Me”. 45 Friday: Little Eva, “Wake Up John” b/w “Takin’ Back What I Said”, Dimension D-1042, 1965. So this happened…I bought this 45 back on eBay in February, but it’s only now that I’m adding it to my Discogs collection. I’m checking various releases on @discogs for the one I have…when I find one with an eerily familiar photo. It turns out it’s a photo of the same 45 I bought. Note the handwritten “Shirley W”. I’m guessing the submitter for this Discogs entry just copied the image from the eBay listing. Little Eva was a singer hailing from Belhaven, NC.
