What time of day is it? Do you think it would be hot or cold?

How come there are no children, but children are mentioned?

Why has the illustrator used dark colours?

What is the significance of the moon?

Would you like to be in that environment?

To ask these questions in an engaging manor I would get students into groups and they can share their answers and discuss why they did.

Prompt 8

Searching Tumblr using the #picturebooks, I found that many of the books were unfamiliar. A blogger that stood out for me was Jake Parker, this author used the hashtag to promote a picture book that he had just published. This would be a great tool to find a book that a future classroom has not read before as I did not recognise many of the books that came up when I searched the hashtag

Prompt 7

I understand where the speaker is coming from, especially when she focuses on writing about your favourite thing or character when writing. rewriting is a good skill to have but students need to be able to develop this skill properly before they can constantly start rewriting, rewriting in my idea is assuming a student has made no mistakes but if a student is re writing with simple mistakes then they should be focusing on the grammar aspect which would be more important.

The writing component that was conducted during my time on placement was procedural writing. I observed the class watch a video clip of Mr Bean making a sandwich on a park bench. This funny video had all the students engaged. The next thing was the students were to make their own sandwich or mimic the one they saw Mr bean make. The class seems to like this activity and worked pretty well throughout. The only issue I had was that there was no real finished product, like it would have been so much better if they could make a sandwich or something else with using their writing skills. Due to OH & S this would not be allowed but it would be a great idea.

The reading side of things was done most days and it was done in groups rotating through activities. I was fortunate enough to take a reading session where the students read to me. My supervising teacher asked me to pose questions that they would answer at the end and also ask the students what was happening and make predictions. These orally or written questions depended on which level group I had and all the students seemed to like the books they were reading and could explain what was happening in the book. This task worked well and I didn’t find any improvements to make.

The poster is something I made a copy of that I saw in the classroom during my time on placement. The year 6 cohort mostly worked predominantly in groups and did activities that required them to work in groups. The acrostic poem outlined in the poster above is an indication of how the students should work when they are in their groups. These guidelines worked well in the classroom and every aspect of these was used in a positive and negative manor. Seeing these set of skills work well in the classroom is something as a preservice teacher, I would want to instill my future classroom. The other major point from this poster is that in some group work activity students opted to work by themselves if they wanted to but they would still follow the guidelines and that still worked well. In my short time on placement I could see the students benefiting from group work activity and as group work is becoming more common in universities and work places these skills learnt will be highly beneficial for students in their later years.

Prompt One 2018

When I read the prompt this week I instantly thought about the Gif that I added to the top of this response. The picture illustrates the passion and love for footy that has been derived from novels such as Specky Magee. I still remember seeing this book for the very first time in the school library and printed on the front cover was a boy leaping up and taking a mark. The book at the time was at a level that was too high for me to read but I really wanted to read it because of the cool front cover. My Mother read to me using lots of enthusiasm and tonal changes that allowed for me gain an understanding of the comprehension of the significant events and also the characters names. Through this positive experience I had, I developed a strong passion for reading books based on football and by the time the sequel of the Specky Magee books came out I was able to read them comfortably. To ensure that I was reading and understanding my mother also read the book and we would often discuss what was happening and what part of the book we were up to. At the time I knew nothing of it but on reflection, this was helping me to further develop my recitation and comprehension. Through writing this piece I found the book and found myself getting sucked in and reading a few chapters and I just wanted to keep on reading. This feeling is why I loved reading these football orientated books and guided me to become the reader I am today.
