The “Iron Cross” wipeout at Mavericks in 1994 is often shared as a legendary surfing moment involving teenage surfer Jay Moriarity.
On December 19, 1994, at just 16 years old, he was caught inside a massive wave at Mavericks, one of the most powerful and dangerous surf breaks in the world. The wipeout was so intense and dramatic that it became iconic in surfing history, showing both the raw power of the ocean and the courage of young big-wave surfers.
Tragically, Jay Moriarity passed away later on June 15, 2001, at the age of 22. He died in the Maldives during a freediving (breath-hold diving) session, where he failed to resurface after a dive and was later found drowned.
His story remains powerful in surfing culture, not only for the famous Mavericks wipeout, but also for his passion for the ocean and the legacy he left behind at such a young age. — at Mavericks.
