Arrow: Countdown To The End
The end is upon us friends. We knew this day would come, but now that we officially know Arrow will be concluding after a 10 episode run in Season 8 thereās a torrent of emotions flooding in.
When I first saw Stephenās tweet I wasnāt shocked. I was expecting Season 8 to be Arrowās finale season, however the 10 episode order surprised me. And I was cranky about it. Itās one thing to believe the show is going to end, but itās another to know it for sure. I knew I wouldnāt be prepared to let Arrow go and wanted 23 episodes to get used to the idea. So, 10 just felt fast⦠and soon.
But ultimately the crankiness past and I allowed myself to feel what I was actually feeling, which is sadness. I love these characters. I love this show. It has brought me so much joy, amazing experiences and truly wonderful people into my life. Itās hard to say goodbye.Ā
It feels like my children are leaving the nest. I know I have to let them go on to new things, but itās going to be incredibly emotional. Goodbyes are sad.
Goodbyes can also be joyful. I understand why Stephen Amell has chosen to stop playing Oliver Queen. I believe itās the right time for Arrow to end. I am glad my understanding of this network remains in tact and they are giving Arrow the time to conclude the way the fans & show deserve.Ā
I am happy Arrow will be ending with Stephen, Emily and David. I feared losing cast members if the show continued for much longer. Itās happened on other shows Iāve watched. Quite frankly when core characters leave the show is never the same. When it does finally end thereās all this back and forth trying to get the actors back for guest appearances. Sometimes the actor is available sometimes they arenāt. Itās always kind of a mess and itās mess I wanted to avoid with Arrow.
Iāve also adjusted to the 10 episode order and honestly I think itās a good thing. Arrowās quality is always better when they are under a gun and weāre barreling towards the final episodes of the season. Weāre ramping up to the end of Season 7 and that momentum will continue into Season 8. Itāll be pedal to the metal with 10 episodes. Itās an episode order I always wished the show would have because it removes unnecessary filler episodes. Arrow can throw one bomb after another until we reach the end. Itās gonna be a wild ride.
Do I think Oliver is going to remain dead with 10 episodes? No. I donāt. Initially, I had aĀ āOh crap he might remain deadā reaction and ratcheted the possibility up from 20% to 40%. However, once the shock wore off, and I actually thought about it, I discarded it. Arrow doesnāt need 12 episodes to fix everything thatās broken. Thereās still 2 episodes remaining after the Season 8 crossover and Stephen is signed for those 10 episodes. He isnāt staying dead (if Oliver is dead).Ā If Oliver dies in the crossover I still believe he will be resurrected and will save Star City in the final two Arrow episodes. This will fundamentally change the flash forwards and perhaps open the door for a spin off.Ā Ā
I simply donāt believe Oliverās story ends at death. I believe he will leave a legacy, one in which he can hang up the hood, live a peaceful life with Felicity, and raise their family. When Star City is saved it wonāt mean the end of all crime. It will be saved because Oliver Queen will have fundamentally changed the DNA of the city and imbued them with hope. There will be other heroes to carry on the mission and Star City will have embraced vigilantes as part of the hope Oliver Queen has built.Ā
Oliver does not need to die for any of this to happen. In fact, it requires he live for a good long time. There is something special about Oliver Queen. Without him everything falls apart. He will not die before he saves his city and the city cannot be saved without Oliver Queen. If it could then everything wouldnāt have gone to hell in the future.
We are seeing the world that exists when Oliver is dead in the flash forwards. So, they are already showing us Arrowās ending, which means itās not the ending. The pendulum will always swing my friends. Of that I am sure.
As we speed our way to this storyās conclusion I am going to do what I have always done - believe everything that is broken will be fixed. It may be messy at times, but Arrow has never let me down in this regard. There is no danger in hoping. Iād rather spend the rest of my time with this show enjoying it and believing Oliver Queen will get the ending he deserves. Also Stephen said in his video, āSomething tells me even when Iām done I wonāt be gone. If you watch the Arrowverse you should understand that.ā Thereās all kinds of hope in that statement my friends.
I am so happy to share these final 18 episodes with my fandom family. You have welcomed me and my writing into your lives with open arms over the past four years. I am overwhelmed with your support and encouragement.Ā I cannot thank everyone enough for reading what I write and discussing this wonderful little show we all adore. I canāt wait to share more reviews and spec with you. We still have a lot of story left!Ā
And donāt worry. Something To Live For isnāt going anywhere when Arrow goes off air. I will be writing, reviewing and enjoying all things television. The community we have started here will remain for anyone who wants to enjoy it. I still plan on expanding the blog and thereās plenty of Arrow content to come. Now that I have an official end date for Arrow, Iām going to hold off on finishing the Season 1 and Season 2 reviews until the show goes off air. Thatāll give us something fun to do to sort of wean ourselves off Arrow.Ā
Lastly, I am finally doing what yāall have been telling me to do for the last four years. I am writing a book! Thatās the special project Iām working on, which is why Iāve backed off reviews. I am hoping to have it completed by the time Arrow Season 8 premieres and hopefully it will be another story for you to love.Ā
I hope you will join me as we countdown the finale episodes of the series that brought us all together. This is the last train my friends, but weāre gonna have a blast together just like we always do.
