Pinned by Ellie, Ellice and myself as part of the project management brief for a pop up shop in Kingston in partnership with the student union.
Primary research for KSA shop brief
Project Management- creative with Russell
THE CLIENT:
The kingston University student union.
THE BRIEF:
1. Design a pop up store that will be student-led for KSA students to sell their work/products in.
2. brand it! the client ( the student union) does not want to use Kingston Univeristy branding.
3.Plan a launch and activation for the store.
INITIAL IDEAS:
When first presented with the brief, Myself Ellie and Ellice formed a group and started to think of concpets for the shop that would make it multi- functionaly aswell as sustainable.
We also wanted to include a product display system that could be interchangeable and therefore products will have the ability to be shifted in and out easily as their will be a higher demand for some products over others.
Our initial concept was for a store titled ‘rotation’ which i have begun to illustrate below. The idea came to us when we began to think about how diverse the products were that the student union would be recieving and how we then could swap items in and out.
i thought about way finding in the shop and how to approach this in a way that would not be too overpowering in the shops design. Iniitally, we thought about using bright vinyls on the floors to separate some sections from others and also to lead customers around the shop...
Later on we decided against. this as we found alternative ways to achieve the same effect without having to use a line for division. ( see below) We all agreed that a nice way to do this may to be have an accent colour to highlight particular portions of the room.
We were also asked to consider the fact that we would have to design the shop for three different size units as Claire was still looking at units.
We then thought about all the element that we discussed and broke them down into what the necessities of the design is so that we done loose those bits if the scale of the shop was significantly smaller.
We put together this mood board to illustrate the mood and atmostphere that we wanted the shop to have (see below).
At this point in the project, after the first class crit, i felt that our ideas needed pushing further as i didnt feel as satified with our ideas as Ellie and Ellice. i felt that there was something missing, We didnt yet have anyrthing unique obout our shop that we could use to draw customers in.
Therefore, following this, we all went off and did some more primary and secondary research to try to think about what we could br inspired by to develop our idea.
Myself and Ellie did another trip around kingsto town centre to see what kind of stores there were to try to understand what kind of customers we were going to have. I noticed that the demographic that the stores were targetting were mainly families and the middle class (similarly to that Richmond). Which made me think about families and the home in general. I thought about the products that we were going to be selling and how we could appeal to this type of audience by suggesting that they could buy something from the student union store and it would fit perfectly in their home. I then thought about using a home interior for the shop and displaying the products as if they are already in a model home.(similarly to that of ikea)
(insert mood board)
I then showed my findings to Ellie and Ellice and they agreed that this could be a route towards fixing our problem.Ellie and i worked on the idea some more and began putting together a floor plan for the shop using the hmv unit in the Bentall centre as its home.
We thought about window space and how we could include the idea of a garden coffee shop to entice customers to come in. We then thought about how we could use the layout of the shop as a way to get people to walk through the interity of the shop and therefore to see all the products before exiting but also presenting them with the option to go straight to the garden space.
Ellie then created these inital mood boards to develop the idea further which ellice then developed by creating our first illustration for the garden to bring the idea to life abit more.
This visual was developed more as we worked on the details for each room.
i came up with the idea to create a booklet to house all of our visual work for the project as we had so much at this point. So therefore, i began to research magazine layouts and designs to see what we could accomplish during the time frame given. (there is a screen recorded video on another blog post of our joint pinterest page showing more images that we were inspired by)
(insert mood board)
I also went to the libary to see what magazines they had so that i could develop a tone of voice for the magazine. i wanted the text to be informative (as it was going to be submitted as an aid for the student union ot understand our design choices|) but also informal enough to feel like a catalouge which is what i was going for .
i also looked for the perfect quote for each room to further reiterate the mood and atmostphere that we was going for in that particular space.
i wanted the design of the booklet to lightly mimick the design of the shop so that the whole project handed over could be cohesive. As a group we devided up the jobs and the PID documents and checked in with each other each week to ask and awnser questions if we had any. We also decided on accent colours for each room which changed multiple times. We then corresponded our tagging system with the colour of the rooms which would help with product organistation.
From this point onwards, Ellice was working on the illustrations, logo design and posters.
Ellie worked on the mood boards, product organisation and product display and i worked on the design of the booklet and presentation which we made a script for and ellice delivered. A big part of the creation of the presentation was developing the personality of the brand and trying to bring to life its values and then in turn marrying this with the visuals which ellice and eliie were making.
Although, at first we thought that we divided up the work equally, we later came to realise that Ellice had taken on too much so i did the illustration for the bathroom following the same style that she had been using and i worked on the launch idea.

THE BRIEF
To create a project plan for a student ran pop up shop in Kingston town center, in connection with the Student Union.
INITIAL THINKING
Fast projects: Project Management when time is short- Fergus O’Connell
What is the first thing you say when someone proposes a project to you?
we will take a look at it.
what is a poisoned chalice project?
a project that initially seems really rewarding but already has a set budget, the team made up and an end date which is dangerous
give an example of resource baggage
budget
what are the two kinds of baggage that accompany a project?
team
time
people
money
why are there many different endings to a project?
people are on different pages as to what they expect as the finished project.
what is O’Connell’s term for user requirements or quality standards?
parameters
what is a WBS? On which page is there an example?
list all jobs and see if they are organised into sub-groups and assign specific people to specific jobs
a project manager has to ensure all jobs get done- what are the two basic kinds of job?
the main job and the dependancy job
what is and why do you use the 10% rule?
add 10 percent onto any estimation of time for extra
STAKEHOLDERS
In project management, people should not be treated equally.
Due to :
people having different strengths
alternative communication may be needed
it will take longer
You should not spend time with each person equally!
Due to :
the output... the more time you spend with the weakest link the less you come out with.
You will need to design how you will communicate with each person putting more time in for the stronger people in the group.
What is a stakeholder?
Anyone involved in the project or affected by it.
You should make a list of all stakeholders by name in order to communicate with them.
what is the difference between responsible and accountable?
responsible- in charge.
accountable - the one who gets the blame. they manage the people who are responsible for it
why do this?
to know what kind of reports you need to send to each category
to monitor each stakeholder effectively
why do you monitor them all?
to maintain your plan and stop people from moving between categories.
what are Win conditions?
what is important to them - what does success look like for them?
How to generate research:
look at ways that people launch shops (5 examples)
good branding (look at the commercial market)
what do people call shops that sells everything
look at ’ appear here’ how do they brand themselves what do they feel like?
pop brixton’’
what do the interiors look like?
Tesco owns a chain of indie coffee shops (how do they make themselves not look corporate?)
is the branding on the receipts? or somewhere else conspicuous.
(Research is evidenced on basecamp)
WBS- Work breakdown structure
We need to put all the jobs into work-packages with a due date!
The challenge is to group up the tasks into jobs as a work package for one person to carry out or manage.
e.g. JOB: Hiring staff-
TASK:
identify job roles
post ads
interview and contract
Decide on the ideal launch time?
Risk register
What is risk?
More things can happen that will happen
Live case study: Hubbub
INTRODUCTION TO THE BRIEF
Deadline: 25th May 2020
DESIGNING FOR COMMUNITIES LECTURE
I found the lecture to be really valuable, in that it really helped me to break down all the ways in which I can design a campaign with a purpose. It explained how to attract the attention of the audience as big as the general public and the best ways to segment that audience so that the campaign is specific to the people in that area or community.
1.Hooks
2.Fun theory/Gamification
3.Stories
4.Social norms
5.Disruption
6.Simplification
7.Nudge
Campaigns that I resonate with from Hubbub:
1. Bright Friday
why is it successful?
Free clothes alterations and repairs with a local haberdasher (incentive to do good).
the campaign used the social norms theory which suggests that people will follow each other's decisions and behavioral patterns in order to fit into today’s society.
visually displays the number of clothes we throw away every 3.5 minutes in the UK (that's around 300,000 tonnes a year)
2.Ballot bin
why is it successful?
The Ballot Bin taps into people’s desires to participate- gamification
it also uses a hook to get people thinking- the bin raises a question which will be sure to evoke an emotional response from the audience due to its links with current affairs.
Research from BBC documentaries ‘the price of fashion’ and ‘secrets of superbrands’
Scamps of initial ideas :
How can we make generation z more mindful clothes shoppers?
For my research, i watched the two episodes listed in the post-it notes (below) and pulled out the most interesting opinions that I found from each speaker. I found this a useful way to gather research as I was collating my information from the exact target audience.
After gathering this information, i came to find that no matter what me and my friends do or say we are all also part of ‘image gang’ which refers to the notion that we all want to be part of a larger image. Which lead me to start thinking that maybe there is something in that...
We as a group do swap clothes from time to time to save money. I feel that the reason that we do this in a covert way is to avoid the embarrassment from other people finding out that we did not have the money to buy a new outfit everytime. (which sounds silly to some but this is the generation that i currently live in)
Idea 1 : clothes shopping app between friends
idea 2: Thrift store hunt and snap!
Idea 3:
Live case study 1: Remarkable Tolworth
We began teaching block 2 by being briefed on the project at hand by Clare. The project was commissioned by the ‘121 Collective’ and ‘Community Brain’ who are two groups that are working towards making the area of Tolworth a lot more engaging for visitors and local residents.
Our role (my team and myself) within the project is to research into the history of Tolworth with the help of BA: Geography (who are also working on the project). We will need to gather as much information as we can in order to make informed design decisions later on in the project. We were given a lot of useful links and articles to read which should also help with creating an outcome that will actually be of some use to the people who will see it every day.
The aims of the project include:
1.research
2.re-writing the brief
3. defining team roles and responsibilities.
4.ideation and prototyping then evaluating of ideas
5.creating an action plan and outcome
6.pitch presentation
7.project report
what the client wants:
We were put into groups and I was placed with Niall, Tinashe and Aaron E and we were asked to work on the heritage route, which means that we would be designing something for Tolworth that would teach its residents about the heritage.
VISITING TOLWORTH
13.01.20
The walk around Tolworth was very valuable for gathering a better insight into all the hidden treasures of the area. This, in turn, helped us to ask the right questions when we spoke to a few locals in the shops in addition to shopkeepers. The comments that we received had confirmed our own thoughts and feelings about Tolworth. We found that although there were interesting little pockets within the area, they all felt really disconnected and underdeveloped.
Workshop with Annie Yonkers- reflection:
I guess this workshop was helpful in the sense that it was a nice introduction to the people that we will be working with on the project and studying how they use their own knowledge of map-making which was very different to us as creatives. In my opinion, I felt that the workshop was a little too far fetched in terms of content, from what we were going to be doing as part of the creative on the project.
Heritage: the definition:
What a person or place inherits from someone or something.
Consider who your target audience is and why:
what kind of information will you need and why?:
We will need to gather research on what other areas do to showcase the heritage of their area and whether or not the demographics of that said area affect this?
What questions do we have for the presentations?:
Why did you approach the project in this way?
what ideas do you have for the project moving forward?
Reflections on what the geography students and what our role is within the team:
I felt the first presentation was really strong as it was rich in content and the research was well executed. They approached the project in a way that I felt really detailed the scope of the brief for us which made our job much easier to carry out and understand.
This particular slide was important for us as it helped us identify exactly who our audience is which makes the design process more focused. At this point, we began understanding that the heritage of Tolworth lies within the minds of the older generation but perhaps stops there.
We all agreed that it would be important to try to create something that would engage the younger people of Tolworth in order to keep the heritage alive.
The first group highlighted these five heritage sites as the richest in terms of the content that they were able to find. We would later develop this further.
In terms of my initial research and impressions of Tolworth, I found that Tolworth’s leisure centers were very hidden and unknown ( which was backed up by the first civic and community presentation). Therefore, I felt it important to raise this to my group in our next meeting. The Ace of spades roundhouse that existed in the 50′s was the last entertainment spot that brought residents together that they can remember. I did a bit of research into what it exists as today and I found that it is now used a shop and flats which reside about it which leaves Tolworth without the entertainment hub that it once was.
On another note, whilst searching online, I typed in ‘the ace of spades -Tolworth’ and an escape room came up which got me thinking about whether we could use the concept of an escape room based on a narrative of the heritage of Tolworth to engage and teach a younger audience about all the interesting history that lives right on their doorstep??
Designing a place purpose manifesto for Tolworth :
After reading through the presentation that was given to us by Simon Yewdall, I came to find that in order to create a manifesto in this way, we must consider these things:
Places need to be distinguished like brands. And how do we brand a place?
We attach a set of values to it which will give it a purpose or meaning...
This will work towards building or changing the way a person views that place or thing. For this, we must consider why they exist and how they will help people. So in terms of thinking why a place like Tolworth exists, we think about the history and why this is important to the people...
Is it for :
cultural reasons or in order to cherish memories from the past?
We also must consider if, within this, we highlight and conserve heritage or embrace the future? Or perhaps, is there a way of doing a little bit of both??
Are we able to create a social impact within this? By encouraging people to come together to build memories and make history???
At this point, I began to think about how we could record and document the social change there was to be one as an effect of the execution of our proposal.
Perhaps there is an opportunity here to suggest that the proposal could include a social media campaign which ties everything together...
Research:
(At this point in the project, we all decided to create a group project in basecamp to allow us to all share our research findings. We all did this separately )
So I gathered that in order to begin to understand the heritage of Tolworth, we will also need to begin to understand the people of Tolworth and what they want and need from their community area. Therefore, we wanted to look into the opportunities for designing for the civic route as well as the information that was accessible for the heritage route.
Economic growth and development strategy
the strategy developed in 2017 has the aim of increasing residency with the renovation of Tolworth tower. However, this plan is riding on the idea of reducing 02 emissions from the A3 which is an ongoing problem for Tolworth.
the strategy also outlines that the Tolworth tower provides a historical legacy.
the area is very disconnected from its thriving neighbors: the red lion and Chessington which disallows the flow of culture from each area into the next. Perhaps this is something to think about for the proposal??
Tolworth’s function within the greater town on Kingston Upon Thames
Tolworth only really caters to serving the local population when it comes to food culture which may be seen as a problem as this will not attract new younger visitors and residents.
Possible plans for Tolworth
well defined public landscapes
change surface of the road crossings
accumulation of low plants to create a greener area
Tolworth roundabout to have cyclist routes, seating, and trees
redesign of the station car park
electric charging points for cars
provide a bus station which may encourage people to use Tolwoth as the main station instead of Surbiton.
The history of Tolworth:
Talwoth is listed in the Doomsday book.
David Bowie launched Ziggy Stardust in a local Tolworth pub.
home to Manor house that was owned by the queen.
the railway came in early development and the residential areas came later as a side effect of the new easy access to the suburbs.
remains of the medieval moated manor at Tolworth court
Tolworth court farm fields.
the richness of good apples. (Tolworth apple store)
Shedx is working to enrich Tolworths lands once again by promoting growing your own food in newly developed farms.
The most popular heritage sites in Tolworth:
Ace of spades pub
the river hogsmill
the history of the apple stall
the toby jugg pub
Mary Quant cosmetics Gala factory
We decided to narrow down our ideas and focus on four or five of our most developed ones. At this point, we all had our preferences on what we wanted to focus on so we decided to come up with some visuals and further research for our desired concept choice. As me and Aaron both liked the idea of developing an escape room we both came to the conclusion that we should collect some first-hand research by booking one to see if this could be a potential route for our project. We found that there were loads in central London but there is also one in Surbiton that was cheaper and would maybe be a little more enlightening in terms of seeing what kind of puzzles they use in the escape room for a Surbiton audience.
Aaron and I signed up and attended the escape room to understand how it really works. Due to the fact that we were not allowed to film or take any pictures we recorded the information below from memory:
- it has to follow a narrative of some sort
- the game relies on time.
- there are riddles, puzzles, and codes available to work with which will help you find clues.
- the escape room provided you with a pen and paper to write down information that would help you throughout.
- lock boxes opened other lockboxes with lead to the release of keys.
In conclusion, we found the whole experience really engaging and really quite clever. The only thing that we found a little outdated was the fact that we had to write down things so that we would not forget it which lead to us losing more time on the clock. From this, we decided that we could make our escape room have a digital element to it to avoid this.
Defining team roles and responsibilities
At this point in the project, I was still pretty much set on the idea of designing an escape room and a supporting app as my main concept to focus on. Aaron also, therefore we decided to begin refining this concept whilst Niall worked on an event for Tolworth which is the concept that he wanted to develop.
I began by generating more research on the heritage sites in order to understand how much content would be available for each site to use for the design of the escape room. Here, I realized that i was able to find a lot more personal accounts for the Toby Jug pub than for any other site. So, I focused on this particular site to see if the concept would even be feasible.
I visited www.closedpubs.co.uk/surrey/tolworth_tobyjug.html, where I found some interesting information from people who used to visit the pub from when it was first built to the time that it was closed down.
In order to build on the knowledge in a visual sense, I spoke to my parents and my nan about their own memories of visiting pubs in the 70′s onwards as i couldn't find any images from inside the Toby jug.
In some of the comments from the website shown above, there were some indications as to what was made available for customers such as pinball and cigarette machines and a pool hall which I could use when building a map for the escape room.
In order to create this, I asked Tinashe if he could help to find any images of the tub in public records. He supplied me with some images that he found in the Kingston library and also online.
In terms of pushing my ideas further, i intend to create a digital mockup of in the interior and exterior of the escape room to give the client an idea of what kind of content is needed to make the idea work. Tinashe also came up with the idea that the escape room content could change annually to keep the engagement meaning that every year the escape room would become and teach about a different heritage site.
The exterior design of the escape room
We started to explore the idea of using a shipping container to house the escape room which would be situated on the green area near the farm of futures or inside an abandoned shop on the broadway. Depending on how far the budget can stretch for the project, we would use more than one shipping container attached together to amplify the space and content that is available for the room.
I created a mood board for the inspiration for the exterior design of the escape room. I also created the designs below with the idea that we could use a similar design to that of the heritage arches as they are originally set to be placed at each heritage site so perhaps customers of the escape room can benefit from the information being displayed in a similar way around the shipping container to read just before they go in.
This was the final design for the exterior of the escape room. After i shared my scamps on basecamp for the rest of the group to see, we decided that the most effective way to do it would bt to use the exterior design as a tool for learning the history of tolworth. This would also be beneficial as the people who are entering the escape room can learn the information for each site before they go in. We also decided to keep the colours the same for continuity.
In the feedback that we recieved from the panel, it was mentioned that we could have used a similar style to that which was used in the logo which i felt would have pushed it further and given it a less corporate feel to it.
The campaign - Ties to Tolworth
We all decided that we should use social media to tie in all the work that we had done for the project which would help to make it feel more cohesive. We brainstormed possible campaign names and began scamping ideas for logos.
At this point, our individual roles within the project came quite naturally to us as a group as we all had different strengths and this became clear after we had a meeting to show each other what concepts and visuals that we had been working on.
Tinashe highlighted that he felt most comfortable gathering further research and imagery for the project. (This would come in handy for the heritage arches that Niall was designing and for visuals for the pub interior )
Niall said that he felt comfortable developing visuals for the heritage arches and using the information that Tinashe was gathering to work on typography for that also.
Aaron decided that he would like to help develop the escape room visual and app concept with me as we were the ones who developed the brief and brand guidelines for the project.
In addition to this Aaron was handling the colours and font choice for all aspects of the project which would help make our concepts feel like part of the same project.
In terms of the presentation and report, we all have gathered a lot of information about our proposal both separately and as a team, therefore, we decided that these elements would be a group effort and that we would follow the same brand guidelines when designing the layout of the presentation.
Aaron created the logo above which we would use throughout the project.
Ties to Tolworth -app
Aaron and I worked on the concept for the app together deciding what the functionality should include and I did a lot of research about what the difference is between UX design and Ui design is. I found that I had already been following a lot of UX designers on Instagram so I was already inspired to push my work from last year with all the little tips and tricks that I had learned.
We knew that the app had to have two options at the beginning that would guide the user to either the escape room content or the content about Tolworth's heritage which needed to be clear in its design. I created some mood boards to identify what I liked and what I felt worked well in terms of functionality. I and Aaron discussed that although the app was designed to display heritage information and should have a formal tone, it should also be fun and engaging for everyone using it . As we felt that this was something that was risky in terms of creating an app that would not feel too outdated in its design.
The report
In terms of my contribution to the report, i created the layout for the pages in indesign and the infograph which illustrates the demographic information of Tolworth as part of the research section.
At this point, my work ethic is a little slow as im feeling super anxious about corona virus and what life will be like in the next couple of weeks/months...
im currently not allowed to leave the house to visit any family so im alone everyday as my flatmate has moved out which has put quite alot of stress on my mental health. I also cannot move back in with my mum as shes worried i will pass the virus onto her as her immune system is very weak at the moment. Im really sorry about the lack of effort for this particular part of the submission, i just hope that ive done enough to get me onto the next year :)
VEOLIA PROJECT
BRIEF OUTLINE
Pitch ideas for a public installation made from recycled materials to be sited in the west end of London. The aim of the project is to encourage the public to donate funds for a chosen charity which will be collected and displayed during the Christmas period in a location that is yet to be chosen.
In order to begin to put together ideas for this brief, I began by scamping initial ideas for an installation that I felt would be appropriate for the time, setting and function. In addition to this, I also collated some research around Veolia and what the company does and is trying to achieve. This project will also include the contribution of THE WEST END COMPANY. I also researched about what they do and what I felt they would want to see within the designs for the installation.
Following this, i wanted to put a little more meaning and functionality into my designs in terms of interactivity so i put together a mindmap detailing the reasons as to why people would interact with the installation by donating money.
RESEARCH:
In terms of Veolia, i learnt that as a comapny they run various schemes which work towards the re-use of the majority of waste which they collect in an effort to avoid adding to landfill sites such as the generation of ‘Newlife paints’, bio-trading and much more.
In addition to this, i found that Veolia, encourage their employees to donate £20 towards dementia research as more than half of their employees are either directly affected by the disease themselves or know of someone who is. Therefore, this may be a charity of interest to them…
Following a second briefing with further instructions from Veolia, I had to re- think my ideas in order for them to connect with the brief more. For instance, I would need to structure my ideas around the fact that the installation would be raising money for a homeless charity and would have to be either within the theme of homelessness or shopping (which was requested by the Westminster company which is also involved in the funding of the project).
HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
With this in mind, I began to think about ways that I could fulfil the brief while insuring that I acted on the feedback that I was given by my tutor. Which included:
1. to simplify the ideas I had
2. make sure to instill the idea of togetherness
Veolia presentation- LET IT SNOW
Veolia presentations- feedback and next steps
I had created my presentation and was fairly confident to present to the judges at Veolia head-quarters in Vauxhall. Due to the fact that the order of the presentations went in order of surname, I was one of the last to present which made me feel even more nervous. I have come to the conclusion that presenting is not my strong suit, however, I am trying to work on it with practice. Another thing that added to my anxiety was the fact that one of the judges got up and left just as I was about to start my presentation which I think threw me off a little. Presenting my work to others has always been quite difficult for me as I always have a fear that my work is not good enough after I see how confident everyone else is around me, but again this is something that I will have to work on and find a way I can build my own confidence.
How I think it went:
I think that I needed to speak slower in order to ensure that my idea was relayed to my audience a bit better. Also, I felt my voice shaking when I was talking which also made me a little harder to understand. It also didn’t help that one of the judges needed to leave just as I was beginning my presentation.
Beginning the plans for KSA exhibition
Myself and Valentina were commissioned to put on an exhibition in the dean’s space about the Veolia class project. In order to begin the planning for the exhibition, together we created an object list detailing all of the things that we would like to potentially include. Alongside this, we also created a concept map which we would use to hone in on the main concept that would run throughout the exhibition.
During the creation of the map, we came to the conclusion that the common theme throughout the map was the idea of togetherness which was shown through the group work in class to the ideology of giving a gift at Christmas.
We thought about using the exhibition simply as a way to showcase and documents everyone’s work effort for the construction of the installation from the design stage to the promotion of it.
At this point, we knew that we wanted the overall theme for the exhibition to influence the look and feel of the exhibition as a whole.
initial ideas for exhibition content:
projection of the build of the exhibition on-screen
projection stop frame of 360-degree angle view of the sculpture
the designs printed onto recycled paper???
the storybook
QR code links to an Instagram account including a digital map of the route from the station to installation in Hanover square.
As Valentina had a holiday pre-booked we decided that we should come up with an action plan for the project so that we have a clear idea about what we should have achieved each week. This would also be helpful when we had our tutorials with Russell and Jana.
BRANDING FOR KSA EXHIBITION
it was made clear to me that I was the one who was to create the design work for the exhibition and Valentina was to curate it. Therefore I wanted to focus on the branding for the show. I began by thinking about what kind of identity that I wanted to portray to the audience and how this could coincide with some of the brand work from the marketing team on the Veolia project. In order for the two projects to work harmoniously together, I would need to ensure that particular elements remained similar.
I looked at how we could try to attach values to the brand that i was establishing in order to position the idea of togetherness through charity in the mind of the visitor. I created a rough diagram using the marketing onion to try to understand how I could potentially do this through my design work.
LOGO DESIGN- BEGINNING
When designing the logo I decided that I wanted to make it using simple imagery so that if i needed to make a brand mascot I could simplify it easier by just reducing the number of images or text in the design.
I began by brainstorming what type of images would be suitable and therefore good communicators for my concept. this is what I came up with:
I then thought about colours and how this should also reflect the concept for the show. Following this, I drew up a sheet explaining the brand guidelines for the project which works alongside what the Veolia project is doing also. ( this is my first initial logo which changed as I worked on it further)
I began the project with the intention of sticking to these brand guidelines, however as the project progressed I changed them slightly so that they fit in with what requirements of the exhibition purpose as that also changed due to us being unable to collect some work of people within the class and so on. in addition to this, the name and location of the installation had changed many times which also influenced this decision.
initially, i created the first document as guidelines for the creative work on the project from Ellice's original one. i decided to choose a similar color pallette as i felt that they kept with our overall theme for the exhibition even though i knew that it may eventually change as the project progressed.
Just as I predicted, i did end up changing the colours more as I've explained further in my blog.I also changed the logo at this point and opted to add black into my colour palette to create a greater contrast against the pale blue which is one of my more dominant colours.
In terms of the slogan at the bottom of the document, i decided that by providing the project with a slogan, i will be able to highlight our brand values a little further placing emphasis on the idea of how donating will bring you together.
LOGO DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
FINAL LOGO
After a long time trying to make the logo look as professional as possible, I decided that the font needed to be larger and in capitals and also for the box to be in blue incase the logo needed to be transferred onto a white background. I played around with the colour and word placement until I felt happy with the outcome. Following this, the installation name, location, and date of the exhibition had changed, which meant that i would need to edit the logo again. At this point, i felt it best to remove the text from it altogether in order to avoid it needing to be changed another time and this was a happy accident as in the end i preferred it without the text.
Within this process, I learned how to convert photoshop files into vector images for illustrator which made my logos sharper also how to set up my files so that they were ready for both web and print, not just one or the other.
Poster design
Initially, i wanted to use the original designs from Ellice in order to keep consistency throughout the project. I also wanted to ensure that i only included the most important information on the poster in order not to over complicate it. In terms of design, I kept with the colour palette and also with the geometric aesthetic.
In my second attempt, I realised that I had left out the location :) and I also changed the font slightly opting to go with a more formal font as the spacing between the letters looked better. I also changed the position of the bear as I felt that it fit in the imaginary grid better.
I may later alter the design of the poster depending if the focus of the exhibition changes in any way.
After receiving some feedback about my posters I decided that I wanted to change the layout and make the poster a little more conceptual. I then drew up a few ideas for a new range of posters. I took inspiration from a few posters that I found on Pinterest which use a repeat pattern in their design. I found these effective as they did not give too much away about the exhibition that they were promoting but still had a strong visual style.
i thought about ways in which i could hint/ give an insight into the project without giving too much away. I then did a little research on effective communicative promotional poster design and decided that by utilising the material (used on the installation|) and a thought-provoking question i may be able to capture the attention of the audience/visitor.
DESIGNS OF PRINTS
I thought about how I could incorporate the work effort of everyone within the class into the exhibition and what the best way to display each of these items would be. This is the part of the project that I had to work more closely with Valentina so that we could come to a decision about how the work should be presented whilst following the concept.
At this point, we came to the decision that a timeline may be one of the most effective ways to show everyone's work at an equal level to each other’s as well as giving some context to the exhibition as a whole.
we then came up with a few ideas about how we could display everyone's work in a timeline format which we presented to Jana at our next meeting.
We came up with the idea of using the chicken wire as a relief sculpture against the glass wall as an ice mountain structure which we could hang the images off of to create a display of our timeline.
here, once we gathered all the images that we wanted to include, we thought about using colour coding to show the progression of the initial ideas to the final results.
The list of images in numerical order (right to left)
here, we thought about using a colour coded frame to outline the end product of that particular groups work within the project.
Once, we had established how it was going to work, we had a one to one with Jana, where we struggled to explain our idea. This made it very clear to us that if we could not explain our idea easily enough to Jana then how did we expect our audience to understand what we were trying to communicate. At this point, we decided that maybe it would be best to simplify the idea and use the ice mountain in an alternative way.
i thought about using the mountain as a prop to frame the video content which we planned to play on the projector. By using it in this way, we could hang the exhibition text against it, eliminating the need for a wall sticker or easel.
INSTAGRAM STRATEGY FOR THE EXHIBITION
After doing some research into the different ways in which an Instagram account can be run effectively. I found that content can and should be posted in a strategic order so that the followers of the account are able to become more and more interested in the project/exhibition as time progresses. I also learned tips and tricks about specific content that would be beneficial to post on the account page considering that the purpose of the account is to promote an exhibition and not to sell clothes for example.
in addition to this, I found that in order to increase followings and awareness, hashtags using keywords about location, theme, handouts e.t.c. are also key to sourcing new followers from pages that would not normally visit your page without them. Memorable captions that attract the attention of the viewer can also gain interest and keep the viewer's concentration. Layout and style can also play an important role in giving the visitor a good overview of the brand that I will be trying to establish.
I plan to post:
- development images of the making process
(this will include every group's effort within the project)
-time-lapse of the build of installation
- tagging the artists featured in the photos and resharing images that viewers take of the exhibition.
-use ‘giant square’ to create a broken-up image of the actual installation
- break up an image to post a snippet of what is in the exhibition
- introduction to the artists/quotes
-Instagram live/stories of the exhibition when up
-posters for promotion of the event
Due to the fact that some people were unreliable with the content that we needed to post on Instagram, we were unable to post on the planned dates which meant that strategy did not work as well as I would have liked. However, if I have another chance to work on a project where I manage an Instagram account I would like to be able to build up a bit more of a following and link the campaign across more than one platform
Evaluation:
Overall, I think that to be able to work on a project of this magnitude was a really valuable thing for me to have taken part in, due to the lessons that I have learned by working on various parts of the project. I've learned a lot about group work, the importance of an action plan and project strategy as well as bettering my design skills on photoshop and illustrator. I've also gained more knowledge about how to work and communicate effectively with people who I may not know or find difficult talking to. In addition to this, I've learned that working in a pair is sometimes more challenging than working in a slightly larger group as there are only two people with a few ideas handling a problem rather than a bigger group that would normally generate more ideas that you can bounce off amongst each other. However, the outcome of the project as a whole was amazing.

I would just like to point out that this is a complete re-write of this post since all my work on this project was deleted by accident :).
BEGINNING THE PROJECT
We were put into groups of two in order to tackle the brief that was to be given. We were told that we should focus on analysing the customer for this module as sometimes when you are given a creative brief you can often get too swept up in the aesthetic of the product rather than the functionality. There needs to be a balance in order for the thinking process to be more structured.
We were asked to choose between three different briefs to work on so I went with the music label as after listening to the description for each brief as I felt I would have more scope in terms of creating a campaign that I would be interested in working on.
INITIAL RESEARCH FOR AG RECORDS
After being given some information about our chosen brief, my partner and I decided that we should do some research into the music industry and music labels in specific in order to ask informed questions when we meet our client. This is what we came up with:
1. Do any proceeds go to charity or a cause?
2. what social media are you currently using and are you willing to promote any of your music on these platforms or one of our choosing?
3. Do you believe in a stable A+R team?
4. In terms of digital distribution are you in collaboration with any platforms such as Spotify or Apple music?
5. Do you consider yourself an indie label?
6. Do you offer a performing rights license to your artists? how do the contracts work?
7. In terms of promotion are your campaigns structured and can we have access to them?
8. Do you collaborate with any student-led brands? would you be willing to?
9. Do you work with artists with any genre?
10. Are you funded by any councils?
1ST MEETING WITH CLIENT
After meeting with the client: Micheal Gatt, my partner and I were able to clear up some things that we were unsure about. We were also able to make the first draft of a creative brief for ourselves to begin working on. I will list below the things that we learned at the client meeting.
1. Acid Grass Records is a student-led project or M.Gatt would like it to be.
2. There is the option to use analog processes for the creation of new work which is a USP for the label which we can use later on to the market the label.
3. they have no social media presence at the moment but would like an Instagram and are open to suggestions about other platforms but do not want a website.
4. AG records do not currently receive funding for the project from the university but this marketing campaign will be used as a tool to help convince the dean that they should receive funding,
5. style- 90′s style design desired. Gatt is open to a re-branding of the logo etc
6. audience- everyone is allowed access to the label but the main target audience is Kingston university students and is free to join. AG records want to gain more people from campus’s other than K hill.
benefits for the audience include: free recodings, more experience, students currently own all rights to their work and anything they produce.
7. when- sessions run on Wednesday's 4-7pm at Kingston hill.
8. PACE- is currently the only channel used to find the label.
9.events- events can be organised but AG records may not have the time to organise this themselves as they only have a few hours every Wednesday.
10. AG records are a part of Visconti studios at Kingston hill and would still like to be associated with the studio.
1ST DRAFT OF CLIENT BRIEF
MISSION STATEMENT
As a collective, we aim to provide our clients with a diverse range of creative solutions with a view to ensure trust and guidance for artists within the label.
RESEARCH PLAN
My partner and I decided to focus our research by setting 3 objectives each for our 2 audience segments. This would allow us to retrieve more focused answers so that when we use the correct research methods for each objective. In order to collate research which gives a focused result, my partner and I decided that we should have three main objectives to base our research on. See below:
Primary audience (type A- music enthusiasts in and outside the university): Rony
1. To understand channels in which my customer is most comfortable using when selling and promoting their music.
(Instagram poll)
2. To investigate what is the demographic and behavioral economics of my customers in order to understand why they would want to work as part of this kind of label
(interview of musician- audience persona|)
3. what kind of role our audience plays within the music industry.
(online research)
Secondary audience (type B- students from all campus’): Jordanna
1. To understand the channels in which my customer/s are most comfortable using when looking for jobs or for simply a beneficial vocational use of their time as they are students looking for good job prospects.
(Create a questionnaire to discover why).
2. To find out what type of website and social media pages my customer visits.
(infographics and bar charts using online research)
3. To investigate what is the demographic and behavioral economics of my customers in order to understand why they would want to work as part of this kind of label.
(questionnaire to create customer persona research)
*These three statements may be subject to change depending on whether there will be enough time to do sufficient research on two audience profiles. In my opinion, I believe that in order to achieve the marketing goals of the client, the label will need to attract a secondary audience first in order to obtain their main goal of attracting the primary audience to join their label. This will be discussed with the client upon the next meeting.
ACTION PLAN
Whilst managing the project I felt that to create an action plan before collating research ( in order to understand the customer fully) would not be beneficial in this case as the client's understanding of their customer base is too large a scale for the start-up of the label. Therefore, I will be creating this document following my research.
OUR VISIT TO AG RECORDS- VISCONTI STUDIOS
During our visit to AG Records, we discovered that the label is still in the development process in terms of establishing a name for itself and its lack of diversity. speaking to the client Micheal Gatt, we also found that he was adamant about letting us know how important getting the students more involved in the running of the label is to him as he feels that he is doing all of the grunt work himself. We also came across the fact that the studio only opens once a week and there is not much staff to increase the opening times. After being told that AG is an independent label we assumed that it had its own studio, but it shares its space with Visconti, drama, and theatre classes.
We told him our initial ideas concerning the running of the social media accounts after we hand them over. We suggested that we should be targetting creative students to help maintain these but also students from all campus’ that could help with other aspects which he was open to. We realised that the client still wanted to stick with his original USP after we spoke to him. Leaving AG records, we felt that we could create marketing campaigns that reach various audience types within the one campaign but it will hopefully progress into something more than what we started.
AUDIENCE TYPE B
OBJECTIVE 1- To understand the channels in which my customer/s are most comfortable using when looking for jobs or for simply a beneficial vocational use of their time as they are students looking for good job prospects.
CUSTOMER PERSONA RESEARCH
I believe that customer personas should be crafted from using a combination of both raw data (what you can draw insights from) and educated guesses using your intuition. Customer personas are used to inform the marketer what kind of segments within their customer range is going to be. By studying each of their behavior patterns (both online and in real life) the marketer can make informed decisions on where they should place their product in order to reach their intended audience.
After scouring various websites for research that I will reference below, I came to the conclusion that the information that I had access to online did not allow my results to be as specific to my objectives which is what I needed. Therefore, I feel that collecting first-hand research would be more suitable alongside what I have already gathered online. I then put together a questionnaire that included nominal questions and interval/ratio questions which will hopefully make the analytical process quicker and easier for myself. I also decided that the questions that I would ask would need to be specific using direct and simple language. I came across an online article that also suggested that I avoid asking provocative questions at the beginning of the survey such as gender or race-related questions as this is proven to influence how people respond to the questions asked differently.
I chose to begin the research for customer type B (Kingston University students - all disciplines). I carried out this research by creating a questionnaire that would touch upon subjects that I felt brought out answers about audience behavior such as, questions that touched upon the idea that the audience is emotional, distracted, impulsive and inconsistent.
CUSTOMER PERSONAS AND JOURNEY MAPPING
After visiting the studios, I was able to envision a clearer idea of what kind of audience that the label was trying to reach. My partner and I decided to split the research in half as it would benefit us in terms of time management but also due to the fact that we have two types of customers it would make sense to be focused on analysing behavior patterns for the two separately and then come together following this to begin to think about what we should for the marketing plan.
I will use the answers that I will gather from my sample to collate audience personas that will be informed by real answers.
AUDIENCE JOURNEY MAP-
My partner and I decided to create a customer journey map detailing the user experience of a competitor student-led label in order to evaluate the problems with their social media accounts. we chose to use our own audience profiles and described their experience when visiting our competitor's Instagram and website pages.
OBJECTIVE 2- To find out what type of website and social media pages my customer visits.
OBJECTIVE 3- To investigate what is the demographic and behavioral economics of my customers in order to understand why they would want to work as part of this kind of label.
....
AUDIENCE TYPE A
My partner Rony decided to begin the research for audience type A: music enthusiasts and outsiders. He carried out this research by creating a questionnaire that would touch upon subjects that he felt brought out answers about audience behavior such as, questions that touched upon the idea that the audience is emotional, distracted, impulsive and inconsistent. These are his findings...
OBJECTIVE 1- 1. To understand channels in which my customer is most comfortable using when selling and promoting their music.
.....
OBJECTIVE 2- To investigate what is the demographic and behavioral economics of my customers in order to understand why they would want to work as part of this kind of label

Veolia presentation- LET IT SNOW
Veolia - continued

First Blog Back...
So,
Ive decided that in order to begin the new academic year, i am going to set myself some career and personal goals and really try my best to achieve them this year.
firstly, alongside uni work, i want to collaborate with at least one new person every two weeks on a mini project in order to start pulling together a portfolio or at least to gain some more creative skills to work towards a better portfolio.
Secondly, i will... by force, READ! more books, more articles. In truth anything that will allow the creative juices to flow and to feed my brain so that i can store any knowledge that may help in later projects.
and lastly, try NEW things, ive found that in my first year i was really unconfident in myself and what i could do hence why i never really signed up to do any extra-curricular work on Thursday’s. So this year, i need to push myself that little bit further.
Thanks for listening..

Beginning my artefact
In order to begin my project, I began to consider
periods in the media
it is a well-known fact that periods are severely exaggerated in the media whether that be in tv or in advertising. often, females are shown to be overemotional and angry during their menstrual cycle. however, this is known apparently just amongst women that this does not fairly represent the majority of the female population and If we really want an accurate representation, the whole spectrum should be represented just as equally.
For example, in the movie Carrie, the lead gets her period while on the shower. Her mom finds out that she’s got her period. Her mom thinks she’s the devil and that she’s crazy, and that she’s a whore.
Mother: “Show her, and if she had remained sinless, the curse of blood would never have come on her.
Carrie: “momma, no momma..”
