Caesar had been a rescue pup, which was really hard to believe when you could see him now. He’d been found by Maya herself in a box, under a bridge over the Little Tiber. Yes, even Romans cruelly left helpless puppies if they weren’t picture perfect. Sure, his ears were a bit floppy, and his tail was a little funny, but that didn’t make him any less of a sweetheart! Maya had been appalled, and luckily her family had agreed to take him in. “ Oh, but how will you know his favourite treats, his favourite games? If you steal him, I’m afraid I’ll have to tag along! ” It was pretty obvious that Colleen was joking, so Maya just fueled the joke further, laughing all throughout her little speech. Colleen said exactly the opposite things of what she wanted to hear, what she actually needed to hear to be convinced. But maybe that was a good thing, because she didn’t want to be told any lies just so she would join. This could turn into an interesting conversation after all. “ I know, that’s exactly the problem. I’m very young, what would I be doing among all you strong, badass warriors? I can’t just up and leave the legion, either, my family… ” She wanted to say that they’d never let her, but her father had done exactly that: left camp without the praetor’s permission. What could they say against it? “ I wouldn’t let myself. But what if I lose passion? ”
The dog had looked extremely cute when he wagged his tail and had let his tongue flop when she petted him. Now that she had stopped, it seemed like the dog had wanted more attention from her or from the red head herself. She laughed along as the other went along with her joke, “So, that would mean, I could steal you away too?” She added, a chuckle escaping her lips. But the joke was partly connected to the other wanting to join the Amazons. Maybe she could bring the dog with her if she did join, not that she would force her though. “If I remember correctly, I joined the Amazons when I was eighteen. I had zero skills, I didn’t even know I was a demigod. My life was pretty normal when they came around and I joined despite my inability to fight. I’m pretty sure you’d find what you’re looking for once you’re in!” She told the other, hoping the other would think about it. And she did also understand about leaving her family behind, “If you find it hard to leave your family, you have yo think if it’s out of obligation or love, if it’s the former, then maybe you have to start thinking about you want. It would be hard to leave them if you don’t want to leave them, though.” She tried her best to help out the red head as much as possible, hoping that her words would help her. “Losing passion is a tough thing. But do you think you would lose it? If you love what you do, I guess, it would be difficult to lose it.”

Basil didn’t miss the glance the librarian shot at his books – which he may or may not have delayed putting on her desk for registration. “My apologies,” he muttered as he handed over a book on economics, Sartre’s No Exit, and Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations. At this point it was hard to figure out the last one was his light bedtime reading material. “I don’t think smart is the right word,” he replied with a frown. It was complicated to find the right way to say this. “I think unmasking the mole is like trying to catch a mouse with your bare hands: in the time it took for you to realise there was a mouse at all, it already found many exits to leave you in the dust.” Not to mention a clear divide in natural abilities. To Basil, it was clear: the Mole was someone whose gods-given attributes made them ideal for the job.
She wondered why the male had to apologize. For all she knew, he didn’t do anything remotely annoying to her. When the books were stacked on her desk, she checked them all out, wondering what the other was interested in. So far, all the books he had wanted to borrow made Colleen want to gouge her eyes out, she would not be caught reading these books. She scanned the books as she started to reply to him, “Have you been thinking about this situation for the longest time?” She asked, as she finished scanning his books to the checkout system. “Also, may I borrow your ID for a moment?”
“I think we’re all realizing that women can be complicated and messy and they don’t have to be perfect. It’s just about balance.”

Gods, he was lucky she had chosen to laugh about it rather than push to know the reason behind Ira’s lack of coherency. He would have been hard pressed to give her an answer. “Nah, you don’t look like one. But hey, better not judge people too fast, huh?” he grinned, only to scrunch up his nose at her question. “Technically, yes. But with everyone who got here suddenly, I’ve been told people who had gotten through at least some training at camp had a better chance at being picked because they’re seen as more, like, worthy than those who haven’t. Kind of like you can’t waltz in and steal jobs from the good legionnaires, y’know? Same as outside, really.”
Everyone can choke on their own words, right? It’s why the female had chose to laugh about it than asked, who can well explain their loss for words anyways? She chuckled at his response, maybe she was some sort of a problem. “Well, I can be a problem if you want me to. For instance, I can punch you all the time I see you and be a problem to you.” She joked, hoping that the other would get that it was and that she didn’t mean it at all. “Totally understandable. Would you have tried looking for jobs, though? And I do hope they make an exception for an Amazon because I need the money.”

“The Amazons?” Spyridon’s interest had been piqued: historically speaking, the tribe of warrior women were still a mystery on many levels, the main public only knowing a few disputed facts about them. Like the severing of one of their breasts in order to shoot arrows better, which — he was not going to steal a glance at Colleen to verify whether that was a modern practice. It wasn’t even proven for sure whether it had been an ancient one at all. Most importantly, the Amazons were where Maya wanted to go, they had one of the best fronts imaginable, and the teenager could only imagine the number of fighting techniques someone like Colleen would know. “Did you want to try camp because it’s new? Will you be going back with them once we’re free to go wherever we want again?”
Colleen wasn’t sure what the fuss was when people start discovering that she was part of the Amazons. She knew the history and all but it wasn’t like they were praised in the modern times now, if there was anything, their operations were mostly hidden too. “Yeah, the Amazons.” She confirmed, a little smile on her face. She wasn’t sure of what the other thought about her people but she hoped it was a good thing. His question made her think, she honestly had no idea why she even agreed to this in the first place. Maybe because it was the opportunity to see a new place, “I did. The idea of exploring new things seemed tempting. So, I agreed. And I might. I mean, that’s my life now so I am going back to them.”
I guess twenty is kind of old to be getting your ears pierced for the first time. I never really thought about getting them done before, but I just thought to myself one day ‘what the hell - Everyone else has theirs done, so why not at least try it?’ So I went out a couple of days later and got them done. It does still feel weird to have them done, especially when I wear long dangling earrings or big hoops and feel them banging against my neck when I move, but I like how they look, and I’m glad I decided to get them done.

Your ex girlfriend slamming a book down in front of you, nearly missing your fingers, and breaking what was sure to be a bunch of library rules about noise level shouldn’t be a turn on. For Kennedy? It was. Maybe it was the aggressiveness on her part, always hot but especially when she did it. He hadn’t expected his words to have any power of her anymore. He had picked the fight when he first ran into her. The hostile occurrences had mostly been his fault. It was different being on the receiving end without much prompting. “Was it? You don’t seem to be in a nice fucking mood.” Kennedy placed his hands on top of hers and finally closed to distance between them. He kept the kiss gentle. Despite wanting more, the counter separating them and his own fear of Colleen rejecting him again kept Kennedy in check. Sort of. It didn’t stop him from pulling away to talk more shit. “I thought you liked being called солнышко.”
Colleen kept giving Kennedy her death stare. She promised to herself that if he didn’t get out of there in a few minutes, she’d personally drag him out of the library herself. Never mind if she lost her job, she just doesn’t want him to piss her off. His following words made her cross her arms, giving him a raise of an eyebrow. Not trusting herself to speak, she remained still, letting the tension hang between them. He was awfully taking long to get out of her sight, she might as well drag him then. But before she tried to execute her plans, he did something she never really expected him to do - she liked it nonetheless. She was too surprised to move or retaliate or tell him to fuck off. Instead she kept her eyes on him, unable to register the fact that he did that. He kissed her and it felt like she was back to the glory days - the days where she was most happy. She had felt her heart fluttering and the shortlived kiss made her want more of it but then that didn’t make sense to her at all. She went back to her phone, scrolling through Facebook now and replied, “Don’t fucking do that again or I swear I’m punching your lights out.”
IRA.
Had he really been giving her advice? That wasn’t the feeling Ira had: to him he had just rambled about his opinion, but if that was what advice were, then he might become quite gifted at giving some. “It’s welcome. I mean you’re no problem. I– what the fuck.” If gaining one ability to lose another was a thing, he’d rather stop giving good advice and remain articulate, thank you very much. “Uh, me? I’m in camp,” he admitted dejectedly. “I’d rather work whatever job I can around the city like I did back home, but my parents said I’d have a better chance at CJ. I’m not sure a better chance of what yet, but whatever.”
His opinion meant a lot to her, given that it could possible help her out in this new city. She was glad that the people here were hospitable and that she hadn’t found anybody that attracted her mean side - except maybe only Kennedy, but he was an exception. Colleen giggled at his bad articulation, wondering if he was that way at certain times or if he just flustered about something. “I’m definitely not a problem.” She told him, making light of the situation. She tilted her head at him, wondering what the problem was since she had no idea how this camp thing worked, “Can’t you work while you’re in camp?”

Maya was glad for her vivid imagination, because seeing the tiny huskies howl in her mind was already enough to make her smile. “ Oh, that sounds adorable! I need to look up some videos of that when I get home. ” Instant happiness guaranteed. Caesar seemed to be enjoying all the attention the ladies were giving him, like he hadn’t been scratched by every person they walked past. What an attention-hogger. “ I think he’s pretty much decided he won’t leave now, ” To illustrate her point, Maya gave a light tug on the leash, but Caesar wouldn’t budge, the stubborn little boy, “ so it’s safe to say your techniques work on him too. ” She got a little less comfortable as the topic steered back to the Amazons. She’d guessed Colleen was one, but now it was all too real all of a sudden. “ I don’t know.. I guess I’ve always admired you all. I thought of joining you, but… I’m not that good at fighting. I’ve been in the legion for three years, and I hardly improved. ”
Seeing the red head smile with her own memories made her smile too. It was amazing how dogs could make two people easy friends. She giggled when she had mentioned her looking at husky videos when she got home, she remembered her high school days watching those kinds of videos as a kind of pick me up when she felt miserable. She had felt genuine happiness when she was part of the Amazons but it was nothing compared to the simple happiness that dogs offered when you come home from a long day and they meet you at the door. Petting Caesar felt the same way and it made Colleen pretty nostalgic. “I might decide to steal him away from you then.” She joked, letting a small laugh escape her lips as she watched the other try to tug the dog away from her. “Well, I do promise to take good care of him if I ever get to steal him.” She did hope the other would find her sentiments light and not at all implying that she would. The topic of the Amazons made her curious as to what the other had wanted about it. Colleen gave the other a small smile, she had felt the same way when she just started. “You know, most of these Amazons have been fighting more than half of the time in their lives. Some of them are forty years old. Trust me, three years in the legion is just a small portion of it. Don’t fret, you’re still young.”

Shifting his borrowed books under his arm, Basil nodded in consideration of what the librarian had just said. It was a fair point, one that drew a smile out of him, although a small one. “You are right, of course. Which raises the question: why does Jupiter believe it is necessary for us to hold our ground and remain hidden. Mortals are as resourceful as we are, so my take on this one is, the mole may very well help mortals figure out a way to tell us apart from them. Once they do, they will truly make us other, and this will make it even easier for them to experiment on potential captives, as they would not feel like they are attacking their own people.”
Colleen eyed the books he was having, wondering what this hot guy was interested in anyways. But it seemed to be weird googling over a guy who seemed very serious in the conversation. Not something she wanted anyways. But her question called for serious answers, so she settled into that. She listened to his reply, already seeming boring as it was. But most of what he said was true anyways. “You think the mole is that smart?” The question was pretty stupid even for her standards. But it couldn’t be helped to think of it that way.

“Why’d you ask me what I would’ve done then if you’re not gonna tell me your big idea?” Kennedy rolled his eyes. She had a way of getting under his skin every time he saw her. She didn’t even need to open her mouth. He stared at her in obstinate, trying to figure out what kind of game she was playing at. “You’re the difference. Figured you’d punch me if I even tried to fucking call you солнышко.” He didn’t take the book, choosing to take up more space on the counter separating them.
“I was curious what people think about it. I haven’t given it much thought honestly, I don’t even know what to feel about it. All I know is that it put me here where I am right now.” She wasn’t sure if being around Kennedy was still as pleasant as before given what he thinks about her - a cheater, a liar, things that Colleen never wanted him to think of her, but it was better than telling him all the bullshit that happened to her. The slight mention of the nickname wiped the smile off her face, and she slammed his books towards his body, separating the distance he was closing, “It was nice serving you.” She told him, a venomous look on her face.

Seeing things from that angle, Spyro could potentially understand why someone who looked like she could have any company she’d like would spend time with a kid like him. He gave the woman a nod, humming softly. He looked around in silence for a little while, taking in the architecture and details like cracks in the wall of a flagstone that didn’t look like the others, just he could find his way again later. Walking with someone in silence felt strange, though, so he opted for small talk, hoping she wouldn’t mind. “So, hm, you said you’re new here. What were you doing before?”
Colleen had been used to hanging around with girls like her - mostly the same age. She had almost forgotten what it felt like to converse with other people - males, especially. She can imagine how much lust she had tried to resist all these years and it was hard, especially if your dad was the god of lust. She was glad that it never really affected her in a way that she would try to flirt with all the men she saw, she was glad that some part of her humanity was still some kind of normal. She kept to the other’s pace, trying her best not to be faster or slower. He broke the silence and she was glad at that, it was getting quite uncomfortable. “I’m part of the Amazons. They gave me a choice if I wanted to continue on with them or attend camp. My choice is obvious.”
