their first match had ended peacefully, nicely. at least, in jooheon’s opinion, it had. sombra was an amazing individual and seeing the charismatic player from up close had made him realise why he had such a big following. his fame wasn’t all there was to him, of course, but jooheon couldn’t help feeling the slightest bit excited and nervous when the possibility and prospect of them being and becoming friends seemed within reach.  he’s not sure how it happened that the two of them ended up in the same room again, if he was honest (but thinks to remember it having something to do with him annoying sombra until the other caved). the situation seemed almost unreal, but jooheon was already leaning onto the table, his elbow propped up and hand uncurling as his dimples once again made an appearance, “so, the last time you won, but that was only because i had a bad day. this time it’s gonna be my time, i just know it. what do you say, hyung? are you ready for an arm wrestling match?”

he’s been lying in bed for what seems like a lifetime, buried under his blankets and waiting for the storm to pass. he’s hated the sound of thunder for as long as he can remember, and especially the apprehensive feeling given the short moment of silence between a strike of lightning and its deafening sound as it rips through the sky. once he realizes that he’s still trembling after thirty minutes, he figures he’s not going to be able to fall asleep any time soon. he’s got an important test tomorrow and his whole grade depends on it, but you know, no big deal if he fails and messes up his entire future.

he slips out of bed, completely oblivious to the fact that he usually prefers to sleep butt naked, and stumbles across the apartment and right into jooheon’s room. he doesn’t bother to knock. the lights are closed which means he’s probably sleeping anyways and his intention isn’t to wake him up but to simply sneak in his bed and find some peace. he doesn’t know why but his best friend gives him this sort of warm feeling that he’s never got with his parents. it feels homey and safe.

he finds the boy lying on his side with his back facing him, which jaehyun concludes is the best position for him to go for his usual bear hug. he’s much taller than his friend and always assumes the role of the bigger spoon. it helps that jooheon doesn’t mind it and goes along. except you know, this time it’s skin against skin and the fabric of jooheon’s pajama pants against… well, jaehyun’s dick. if caught, he will just blame the thunderstorm commotion and he wouldn’t be lying. he tugs lightly at the covers and exhales deeply through his nose once he realizes he won’t be able to steal it from him. “joo-yah, i’m cold.”

it was an especially loud thunder crack that made jooheon flinch and rouse from his sleep the first time.he blinks sleepy eyes through the drowsy confusion and doesn’t quite understand what’s going on until the lighting comes and more loud rumble follows. jooheon only squeezes his eyes shut and buries himself further into the covers, pillow pressing over his head to protect himself from the bright light and muffle the loud thunder. it’s terrifying, usually, but jooheon had still been stuck with one foot in dreamland and got comfortable enough again and was about to doze off when something much harder to ignore than a storm called for his attention. jaehyun. his bed dips and something warm and firm presses against his back and while jooheon usually doesn’t mind and more of encourages all and any kind of physical affection, he could feel something quite unhinged press against his butt. a quiet second passes after jaehyun had mumbled right against his neck and another one in which jooheon rationalises that what he thinks he’s feeling can’t be what he’s actually feeling, before he ends up sitting up and squinting sleepy eyes at his hyung. even in the dim light the overwhelming amount of skin was more than just noticeable and jooheon, by instinct, grabs a pillow and starts smacking jaehyun over the head. “yah! hyung, what do you think you’re doing? put some clothes on! do you even have underwear on?” the scandalous situation had made his face turn beet red and jooheon had yet to catch a concrete glimpse of anything, which was sadly thankfully quite hard in the dark. “there was something pressing against me that tells me you haven’t. go get dressed! what are you doing getting into another person’s bed all naked... ah, really. this hyung.”

This is one of the many moments of Mark wanting to mentally slap himself for making the wrong decisions, but then again, when did he ever make a good decision? he can’t differentiate the right words because of his sanity. 

It’s dark, getting darker too. But it’s bright enough for him to see tentacles protruding from the monster, something that looks like a huge octopus– from the little mermaid. Ursula? or is it Sebastian? that’s not the point.

He also finds it crazily weird to find a human the second he turns around. 

A human.

Seeing everything.

♪It can’t be found no way at all

Well, it’s not his fault that some magical grown man who looks like a cosplayer suddenly appear and crawls down the street to fight a giant deadly octopus. But it’s ironic because Mark seems deadlier than the monster in front of them. He plays no part in the stupidity of humanity so he thinks it’s right to remain silent and disregard the human. The stranger will die anyway.

But the thing is, Mark is still in his human form, he always does unless desperate times would call his desperate measures. Which is when the human finally screams.

“Oh– fuck you” the hero sighs and tells to himself before watching the monster take the human in one of its tentacles and runs through the street away.

♪ A distant man can’t sympathise

He runs behind, sprints too, attentively on his feet. 

“Drop that human, you big ass octopus” he exclaims, magic dust slowly engulfing him as he turns into his hero form. He trails his fingers on the whip appearing around his waist. His pupils widening and angry little blue veins appearing underneath his eyes. 

the scene that unfolds resembles something out of a game, or maybe a very perverted anime and jooheon wanted to be in neither in that moment. the monster that comes his way doesn’t hesitate to wrap it’s tentacles around him (it was happening to him in that moment, but it still sounded like a bad joke) and the most rational thing to do in that moment still seemed to be screaming his lungs out. which was exactly what jooheon did. his hands were pushing at the octopus arm(?), body wiggling desperately in futile attempts to free himself, when he looked back over his shoulder and saw the figure from before following them. the profanities shouted at him and the monster made it seem like the stranger hadn’t come across a gigantic octopus that kidnapped people for the first time and jooheon, in realising how completely surreal the whole situation was, can’t suppress a laugh. he once read somewhere that people liked to laugh so they wouldn’t go insane and as the awkward giggles fall from his own lips he thinks that statement must have rung true.

( / the market bustles on sunday mornings and there’s a kind of comfort in being part of the noise. although, eunha never notices much of her surroundings–too busy lugging around plastic bags and ticking items off her shopping list. she’s almost done, and she knows this because when she takes the bag of vegetables from the old lady guarding the shop, she can barely fit it into her shopping bag. she puts her bags down and crouches to see just how she can make this work ) ( @ccxjooheon )

jooheon had just finished shopping the things that were on his grocery list - ice cream and some chocolate for later - when he spots a small girl, surrounded by multiple bags. from where he was it looked a bit like the bags would weight more than the tiny thing and without thinking about it twice, jooheon approaches. “hey, wait a second-” a dimpled smile grows on his face, eyes curving into crescents as he crouches down to grab the handles of the bags into one hand, “here, hold this. i’ll carry the bags for you.” he offers his ice cream to the girl and waits for her to take it before taking a hold of the rest of the bags. “those seem way too heavy for such a small girl to carry.”

“hey! knock it off!”

a light swat to the back of the head was enough to end the child’s determined battering of the old pac-man machine in the corner, his little friends’ encouraging shouts ceasing with it. he knew this kid, and his gang of pint-sized followers, with their stained star wars t-shirt and their horrible haircuts and their grubby little fingers leaving the machines sticky with the residue of food coloring and processed sugar. he knew the ringleader lived down the street from him and he knew they rode their shiny new bikes in the road and shouted and shrieked at each other obnoxiously until the streetlamps came on. they weren’t going to break another machine, not on his watch.

“hey, you can’t hit me!”

“knock it off, or i’ll throw your bikes into rush hour traffic.”

“you’re not the boss of me!” 

“actually, i am. you’re on my turf. it’s my job to be the boss of you. now get lost before i tell your mom you’re ditching study hall for video games.”

he watched them file out of the arcade in a begrudged clump, still sticking their dirty hands into a shared bucket of kettle corn as they went.

“rude little shi-”

a familiar voice interrupted his perturbed musings before he could earn himself another bored, fruitless lecture on bad language in the workplace. a greeting from a close friend whose face was a welcome sight after a long day of babysitting and handing out trading cards to nerds with too many tickets and wiping slushie grease off of joysticks.

he quirked his chin in a wordless greeting and, after wiping down the pac-man machine, started a game himself as he waited for jooheon to approach.

“i’m never having kids,” he told him flatly, narrowly dodging the orange ghost as he rounded a corner, a cherry in sight, “i hate them.”

jooheon had witnessed and seen taeyong’s mood’s drop impossibly low during a regular work day and while he supposed it must be a normal circumstance when one surrounded themselves by things they didn’t like (the children, not the games. taeyong liked the games, that much jooheon could tell.), there were some small things he could do to counter the bad mood. when he finally arrived at taeyong’s work place it was with a box of fresh and still warm chicken and a bright smile on his face. if there was something that would help taeyong it was a positive attitude and some friendliness. he wouldn’t cheer anyone up by being gloomy. “hyung!” jooheon calls for his attention mid rant and sees taeyong catch himself as soon as he spots him. his smile isn’t returned (yet), but jooheon approaches anyway, the scent of the fried food making his mouth water as he lifts the plastic bag. “i don’t think they’re that bad. some of them are really cute, don’t you think? like this one dongsaeng i have, guanlin. he’s really adorable. gets all shy when i talk about kissing his cheeks, which actually makes him even cuter. oh- and,” he dangles the bag in his fingers in front of taeyong’s nose for a moment as soon as he was close enough, his dimples showing as the grin on his face grows. “i brought you a snack. well, us. i want some of it, too, i’m really hungry, actually. but you’re getting at least half of it! something’s telling me you need a good snack today.”

level 1: the encounter

matt comes just to scope the shop out and seeing as how the shop owner sent out the letter they seem to be able to answer a lot of the questions that matt has. he had dropped by hero headquarters and his sister was fine and nothing major was taking place so he didn’t quite understand the situation, but if anyone had answers then this yuuko character seemed like his best bet. he wasn’t that trustworthy of fortune tellers, but even something vague would be fine at this point. the words in the letter were too ominous for him to simply avoid. 

the answer he gets is just as he thought, as vague as possible but from the sound of it it he knows that hardships are ahead. he sits for a while taking in the information and he has a stern look on his face as he’s deep in thought, but he thanks her all the same and ends up aimlessly wandering around the store. in his thoughts he almost bumps into the shorter male. his brain immediately tells him human, an instinct that he can’t turn off now. matt snaps out of his daze and is about to apologize before he’s shut up by the other male’s question. for some reason the other mistaking him as a hero makes him smile, although he knows that this person probably doesn’t know what those are. it shouldn’t make him happy, matt has gotten over this by now, “i’m sorry to say that i’m not a hero. you’ll have to find another hero to be a sidekick of or you know you could always be a hero and not know it.” matt knew that the flyer would draw in other curious humans since it was selling items to allow them to see magic after all. 

said hero actually replies with something that didn’t sound like a typical game dialogue at all and for a hot second it throws jooheon out of loop. the questioning and doubting comes back and he subtly reaches down to pinch his own arm, just to see if he’d wake up. he blinks and the scenery in front of him still doesn’t change. he’s probably staring like an idiot at that point, with his mouth agape and eyes blinking repeatedly but manages to catch himself with loose fists rubbing against his eyes like he’s trying to rid himself of the drowsiness in his very core. “i don’t think i’d be a good hero,” he mumbles out, words slurred from tiredness and lack of focus and it’s only then that he actually starts to reflect on the stranger’s heavily accented korean and obviously foreign appearance. his hands fall away a second later and he stares up at the man again (he’s so tall, why is he so tall?), mouth opening and closing as he attempts to form sentences that seemed so easy on keyboard and so hard when his tongue had to wrap itself around foreign vowels and consonants. “you... uh- look like a hero. so tall.” he lifts his hand to make a point and demonstrate just how tall he thinks the man is, a sheepish and dimpled grin spilling his lips, before he once again recalls the very reason he decided to visit the shop. “ah- do you... the letter... do you understand it?“ it’s still crumbled and shoved into his back pockets and jooheon pulls it out to show the man exactly what he meant.

jooheon finds himself at the door of the shop half an hour and lots of staring at at google maps later. it’s everything and nothing he expected and jooheon’s sleep deprived brain still can’t wrap his head around what’s actually happening. his fingers are trembling, body suffering from the lack of energy, lack of sleep and when he stumbles into the shop it’s on two left feet and with confusion written all over his face. there’s too much he could touch, too much to explore and the lightheaded-ness he’s experiencing has forced him to blink repeatedly to try and focus on one thing at once. his fingers reach for the decorative pieces that are hanging all over the place before he can consider what the consequences of such actions would be, if he would end up breaking something - and it is possible with his bad coordination -, but before his fingertips actually make contact with anything, a movement from the corner of his eye catches his attention. jooheon turns, expecting the owner of the shop or perhaps someone who was working there; he did not expect to see a giant. the man next to him was taller than anyone jooheon had ever seen and clearly a foreigner. it only made sense that what was going on was part of a dream or a very, very long and thorough illusion and jooheon’s mouth, like always, moves without filter, “are you the hero of this game? does that make me your sidekick?”

level 1: letter from hogwarts

You aren’t someone who normally receives the morning mail from an owl, but there’s a Snowy Owl perched outside your window. Held in its beak is an elegant, burgundy envelope with your name and address handwritten in black ink. Should you decide to open the window, your winged messenger will take off to the skies after handing you the envelope. You look for a seal or family crest to no avail, yet it still carries the aura of something official. Do you dare open it?

Opening the envelope releases the warm, ashy scent of incense. Yellow flower petals shoot out from the envelope as though they were spring loaded, and they bring with them the refreshing scent of Ylang Ylang oil. You look inside the envelope. As it turns out, its actual contents aren’t as elegant and mysterious as you’ve been lead on to believe.

It’s nothing but a flyer for some store holding a 50% off sale. Ah, marketing tactics these days! You scan some of the offers for this strange place – Yuuko’s Shop, it’s called – and none of them are accompanied by pictures. The coupon expiry dates are odd too, most of them either expiring decades ago or will expire decades from now. You read only some of the deals:

when he sees the owl in front of his window, jooheon wonders if his belated time to receive a letter to the magical school of hogwarts had finally come. his first impulse is to rush forward, to open the window and embrace the potential of a magical world, while his rational side is desperately screaming at him to lay down and go the fuck to sleep. his dark circles were so prominent they seemed ready to reach his cheeks and jooheon had increasingly more hallucinations since he stopped sleeping in favour of finishing up his game, but sleep was only secondary to his true passion and the owl was still waiting. he’s actually surprised when it hands him the envelope before flying off and it only takes a second before he’s ripping it open with impatient and eager fingers.

the scents that greet him are overwhelmingly strong and jooheon spends a good moment squinting and blinking at the letter before actually trying to decipher what was written on the flyer. as if the owl hadn’t been strange enough, nothing about what was happening seemed to match up and the teen is almost too sure that he was still dreaming a - admittedly - very detailed dream, when the sentence at the bottom catches his attention.

‘something big is coming soon.’

it feels like a game, it feels like nothing he’s experiencing in that moment is real, doesn’t feel like it’s actually happening. it also feels like continuing his marathon of not sleeping and instead heading for that shop was the best thing he could possibly do in that moment.

eyes on the prize.

     to jeongguk, these events are always painfully easy. he pins the reason on it being humans competing — or, rather, those that aren’t as attuned to technology as he is competing. no one can hack like he can, and no one can play like he can.

     he knows what buttons do what by heart, knows what map has which turns and shortcuts, knows the locations of coins, knows the distribution terms of items whenever a question block is driven through.

     he plays like a machine, fingers gliding easily over buttons whenever needed; he drifts in perfect timing, and strategies such as these make his climb to the top — yes, you guessed it — easy.

     ( this is a small event, he knows, though the prize pool should be enough to attract true professional players. and yet, half of the people he’s been up against play like fools; they waste their boosts, they forget shortcuts and coins. he is, in every sense of the word, better. )

     it’s only when he gets to semi-finals that he experiences something considered a challenge, but he takes the win by a little more than a landslide (a lot more than a landslide if you ask him, but the commentators love making things sound dramatic — makes it more interesting, he supposes). the main trouble he found was the human’s knowledge of item distribution: the way she made her distance away from him just enough to get a blue shell or a bullet to the way she caught up every single time he got a bit of a lead. it was an enjoyable race, in all honesty, though it doesn’t stop the surge of confidence and self-centered pride.  

     he stands with a puffed out chest, a smirk of triumph as he waves off the girl (she wasn’t worth a handshake; she lost, after all). many find his attitude off-putting, though his style of play partnered with accuracy and precision causes his popularity among the small group to be higher than that of others.

     jeongguk waits for the other finalist to be announced, looking at the widescreen television until he sees the name “lee jooheon” — along with a picture of a dimple-faced, seemingly optimistic boy — appear. they meet on the stage, and he declines the handshake with a small backhanded smack of jooheon’s hand, the inviting smile on his face a harsh contradiction to his actions just to make it all seem playful.

     “maybe you’ll come in a close second, jooheon,” he says with a tone dripping of confidence yet muted to be in the range of teasing, omitting his own introduction completely; after all, the name “sombra” — if not already known — certainly will be after he takes the win.

     he takes a seat without another glance spared in the other’s direction, controller in his hands as he waits for the cue to slam his finger down on the gas button.

                    three… two… one… go!

     “buena suerte, perdedor.”

it was all in good fun - or so jooheon told himself until his ass actually met the gaming chair and his fingers started smashing the buttons of the gamepad. some would argue it was just a game and not to be taken so seriously, but those people have obviously never played super mario cart in their whole life. it was the game that could break friendships, turn the closest siblings into mortal enemies and was best enjoyed with people you want to see crying in agony. (not that jooheon actually wanted to see anyone cry because of him, but he did get extremely competitive.) the competition was nothing major and he easily climbed his way on top and to the finale where a guy named sombra was waiting for him. jooheon wasn’t worried, at first, but he did recall hearing that name within the community and knew that whoever the guy was, was not to be underestimated. that just further proved to be the case when jooheon and him meet on stage and his dimpled smile and handshake were easily and quickly brushed off. the other boy seems cocky, but his smile is charming nonetheless and jooheon can’t even bring himself to be angry when sombra’s words jab at his pride. his laugh is awkward and he stumbles over his own tongue for a smart and witty response, but only manages to conjure up a quiet ‘or maybe not’ which, as he realises a full second later, was more of a self diss than a good retort. the realisation comes a bit late. they each take a seat and jooheon keeps glancing at the other boy, studies the way he carries his chin high with confidence and feels himself growing worried and nervous. he had been playing games his whole life, he had decided to dedicate his life to it, so, strictly speaking, jooheon should have mirrored the very same posture, yet he turns smaller, almost shy and sombre as he stares at the screen in front of him. his focus is on the game and he not only misses the words muttered in a language he doesn’t seem to understand, but also narrows down on his character alone. he tries to drown out the sounds around him, the subtle cheers, the palpable excitement and, most importantly, the other boy. the route is one he had played time and time again and although his knowledge of each shortcut and knowledge of the best possible way to play it was there, it almost seemed like there was a bug in the game. his fingers and the controller didn’t align, almost as if someone cursed him, and none of his perfectly planned traps end up hitting their planned target, while the other boy seemed to be getting him every time. he falls into second place, then third, and by the time he drives through the finishing line, jooheon’s face is red, full lips pursed into a petulant sulk. yoshi doesn’t look too happy with his gameplay either and jooheon feels bad - not only about losing, but about putting others through the very same feelings he was experiencing in that moment. but despite his disappointment, he musters up the energy to turn towards sombra, a small and soft smile on his lips, just enough to show a hint of dimple, and maybe it would be rejected again, but he holds out his hand to sombra anyway. “hey, man, good game. i’m glad i got to play against you! i hope we can repeat it again sometime?”

ride along

♪  I said neat neat neat, she can’t afford no cannon

The smell of greasy meat and all things processed that screams human, lingers around the streets pass midnight. Mark keeps his guard around his team, it’s a simple mission with simple equations— kill the monster, but Mark begs to differ, he’d kill a hero before he’d kill a monster tonight. 

The S-class hero carefully observes the monster in front of them, letting the music from his earphones keep him sane. Two steps forward and the creature  seems to be rummaging for possible food in the human trash bins. But there’s a stomp of a heavy step among the team and the monster turns around, divides itself into what seems to be clones and makes their own run in different directions.

“It’s a chase” Mark quickly says before lifting his hand up. 

“Wait, wait… I gotta start the song over…” he says, thumb against the player as he rewinds the song before swiftly tucking it back into his pocket.

█ Re-playing: Neat Neat Neat — The Damned

♪ I be a man, kinda mystery man

“Ok go” he commands and they disperse right after, leaving Mark to make a straight run ahead in hopes of catching the monster, his strong intuition tells him so. 

So cue him a few steps behind the monster, cue him pinning himself back against the wall so the creature wouldn’t hear him, and cue him being alone— or not. A sense of human blood doesn’t make the whole situation better.

jooheon tells himself it’s simply a shadow, an imagination that he only ever catches the edges of in the corner of his eye. it comes and goes in waves and he measures it in tiredness, exhaustion that gnaws at his nerve endings with pointy teeth and leaves his shoulders permanently slumped and a sigh constantly stuck on the tip of his tongue. there’s the lack of sleep and lack of proper nutrition and jooheon knows that he knows better than to stuff his face with ramyun alone, constantly, but between trying to work on his game and whatever he had to finish for university, there was little option or room for anything else. he returns home late that night, books heavy in his backpack and lids heavy with fatigue, and it’s that millisecond of something shifting in the darkness of a small alley that catches him off guard. usually, jooheon walks past, ignores it in favour of a constant mantra of you’re just imagining things, just continue talking, but there was something that made his steps slow down and ultimately stop. he turns his head towards the alley, squints into the darkness and takes soft steps closer - it’s then that the blurry shadows start to clear and become shapes. he sees a boy - or young man? - pressed against the cold brick wall jooheon was peeking around and a much bigger shape of something that did not at all resemble a human. in fact, it looked like something that stepped right out of one of the video games he designed and had it been any earlier in the day, jooheon would have considered it a possibility that he wasn’t dreaming. the scenario unfolding in front of him seemed anything, but normal and with wobbly, yet determined steps, the teen dares to step closer, getting his foot caught onto the abandoned lid of a trash bin. the clanking of the metal resonates within the alleyway louder even than the rushing of blood into his ears and it’s a second later only that he wills his frozen body to move, only to find the oddly shaped creature staring straight at him. it’s a dream. he keeps repeating it, jooheon, it’s a dream, you’re going to wake up now and see that none of this was real. but the monster was still staring and jooheon couldn’t move, couldn’t wake up. he breathes in and the monster takes a step towards him. jooheon screams.
