Assignment 7B -Personal Interest
Assignment 7A.
Larry SultanÂ
I choose Larry sultan because his form of photography focusses on portrait type work with great use of light which has related to my work. "Pictures from Home," one of Sultan's most well-known series, was developed in the 1980s. The photos in the collection show his parents and their Southern California suburban house.
Sultan studies concepts of family the making of identity using carefully designed photos. He used perspective in this series in a variety of ways, including by photographing pictures from unexpected angles and vantage points. Another important component of Sultan's work was composition. He thoughtfully placed the individuals within the frame, frequently off-center or utilizing the empty space to evoke tension or nervousness.
Sultan frequently used a narrow depth of field, which helped focus the viewer's attention on certain elements in the frame while blurring the background. Sultan also used sunlight to show off the main attributes of portrait photos by using the back lighting technique. He also tends to use an atmospheric type of style when working as seen when he captures the surrounding area with most of his subjects. His photos of suburban family life's mental and physical terrain combine true and posed photography like seen in these four photos.
The popularity of these four artworks from the series was also greatly influenced by Sultan's use of ideas and themes. The amount of detail of family dynamics, the concept of the American Dream, and the effects of suburban living on people and communities were all topics that attracted his attention. Sultan often shown typical, ordinary situations, but he gave them a sense of emotional depth and realism that made them seem meaningful and deep.
