Planter making and botanical bag printing, an event run by CHERA on the Central Hill Estate, 28th May 2022.
High Limes, Central Hill Estate.
Truslove House was a seven studio apartment building purpose set to house temporary residents who have found themselves in difficult situations. The house was initially built at the outset of the estate to provide housing to nurses who were training in the area. It was since converted for use to house temporary and vulnerable tenants. Truslove House has now been completely demolished as Phase one of plans to completely demolish Central Hill Estate. Today, residents have watched as all of the mature trees which stood around the parameter of the House, providing greenery around the house, homes to birds and squirrels and contributing to the clean air of the area, we're completely felled and eradicated. Flat interior, Gipsy Hill side.
The flats in the estate which currently stand were designed with fine detail towards liveability and cohabitation. Each of the flats were built toward a panoramic view of the city in the horizon, or around the sun path of a day with trees dappling light through windows.

“A Green councillor in Lambeth has called for the halting of the demolition of three housing estates.Peter Elliot, who represents the Gypsy Hill ward, says that refurbishing these estates would be a better alternative. Lambeth Council has pushed through planning applications for the demolitions, despite the absence of masterplans and an overwhelming number of objections centred around health and environmental impact.
In one of the estates, Central Hill, may trees have been felled and there is a loss of green space. Also, estates earmarked for demolition fall into disrepair as the council fails to invest in them. Peter believes the housing crisis will worsen as more homes are being demolished than built.
‘We need regime change to protect our environment and residents… estate regeneration is all about social cleansing not about solving the housing crisis’.”

“Central Hill drapes itself over its topography, creating both moments of drama and quiet enclaves in the spaces between its buildings. It was laid out so as to preserve handsome trees already on the site, and the heights of its buildings were kept low, so as not to intrude above the tree line. There are no tower blocks here, but more street-like forms that are in some ways better than ordinary streets. The slope is used so that almost every living room benefits from spectacular views towards the centre of London, and cars and pedestrians are separated to make safe places for children to play and neighbours to meet, which they do.”
