The best advice really is to just write. Write badly - purple prose, stilted conversations, rambling descriptions. Don't delete it, pass go, take your $200, save all your garbage in a big folder. Look at how much you've made - it doesn't matter if it isn't perfect, isn't polished, it was practice. Every time you write you learn a little more, and find another piece of your voice.

you go to someone's house.

they have harvested all the herbs and vegetables and fruits, butchered (ethically) the animal for the meat, they have spent hours letting the bread rise after cultivating the starter, they have brought out the finest dishes, set the table in such a way that it begs you to sit and be present.

They marinated, sauteed, and baked the entree. The butter is from their cows out in the pasture. They have delicately folded in the ingredients for the dessert. They set the garnishes on the plates, fill the glasses with wine from grapes they grew.

The meal costs you nothing. It is delicious.

You speak up only to say 'Can I have more?' and 'Can I come back for another meal?'

Perhaps you think there's an implied compliment in those questions. You wouldn't ask if you didn't like what you'd consumed.

But the cook/chef/creator has worked so hard to create this masterpiece. The hands-on labor doesn't even include the time they put toward thinking about this meal and planning it.

They ask for nothing, but they crave one thing:

"That was good."
