This is your first time outside of Mare Tranquillitatis, and so far you are not having a fantastic time. The denizens you have met, stalking around the streets of Crises and generally looking to be in a foul mood, have all been wretched and skittering and completely insolent. You can’t believe you ever thought humans were bad. These things are worse. Thralls with furballs.
Thralls are better, actually. At least any thrall worth its salt knows its place in the hierarchy. These things–ugh.
Maybe that’s why your response to the little voice at your side is anything other than aggressive and hostile. These rats are driving you quite mad, to the point where a human is a godsend–a human! imagine! So: you hear it out, despite yourself. A companion. That seems like a task with a very low potential for public humiliation. Why not?
SURE. IT IS EITHER THAT OR I GO AROUND AND TEAR THIS PLACE TO BITS. WHICH I DO NOT THINK WOULD GO WELL FOR ANYONE. You cock your head to the side, look down down down at the human. This one looks different to the others you’ve met. Longer hair. It’s hair, right? Plumage? An impressively well-kept mane? (You don’t have hair. No Hive do. It’s all very mysterious to you.)
THAT WAS A YES BY THE WAY. You gesture, a little impatient, at the road ahead. LEAD ON.
her newfound companion is certainly grotesque, though that’s not the most scathing criticism vira can think of to level at someone -- indeed, it’s not even the most scathing criticism she’s thought of today.
“well, i can take point, if you’d like. the environment is a bit unnerving, but nothing i’ve not seen before.”
crises is a far cry from the sheer hostility of the sky’s far reaches, though it calls to mind many memories -- of a place now distant, she supposes -- of islands untouched by mortal hands, drowned in the ferocity of their own magics. dry grass crunches under her boots, tinted scarlet by the sun that bathes the sea in red; like valtz, where the entire landscape is blanketed by a constant orange haze that light can only just pierce.
vira turns back to xivu with a slight smile playing on her lips.
“they say the denizens have a hidden leader, somewhere deep within the sea -- i’m not sure how true that is, but it sounds magical, doesn’t it? a sort of king in rags.”
around them, the brush rustles softly at the words; glimmering eyes reflect dim light, flashing in the shadows. vira, for her part, appears entirely unbothered by their observers, and hums in thought before turning away and continuing,
“it’s all a bit dreamlike, i think. this whole place. i do wonder if i’ll wake up soon.”
it’s idle talk to fill the silence. even she’s not quite sure where her thoughts lead, spit into the air without hesitation; but she’s talking to take her mind off the decidedly unpleasant sensation that is the plant life brushing against her arms, trying to draw her in and claim her just as it has claimed so many dilapidated structures.
vines, branches, the earth itself -- they all swallow up structures left behind, so that the ruins are half-embedded in the dirt.
“regardless. as long as you’re asleep, your dream is no different than your reality, so the authenticity of our situation does not matter. let us make the best of it!
i assume we find ourselves both in a similar circumstance, and acquaintances should know each others’ names, at the very least. introductions, then. my name is vira.”
bloodstrife:
Ayer feels alive. He feels—
—the wind whistling in his ears as he ducks, dodging a clumsy jab from a brute and returning the favor with an upwards strike of his knee that leaves his opponent crumpling—
—his perception of the world narrowing, time itself slowing to a near standstill as he feels more than sees the kick coming from his right and spins around to connect his boot with the offender’s stomach, the result a satisfying crunch—
—an armored knight, one who was certainly not there when he picked this fight, and the last of the thugs falling to the ground at her feet.
…Oh, great. Just what he needs, some goody two-shoes thinking he’s in trouble and coming to his rescue. The pleasant red haze of battle is lifting now, and Ayer lets his usual scowl settle onto his face as he prepares to let the interloper knows just how unwanted they are here.
Until she speaks, and Ayer notices with a start that he knows her.
Not well, no. He would never claim to know any of the other crew members well, but he at least knows their names and faces and how good they are when push comes to shove. And this woman is very, very near the top of that ranking.
“Vira,” he mutters in reply. “I didn’t do anything; they’re the ones who jumped me while I was taking a walk. Can’t blame me for defending myself.”
He intentionally leaves out the part where Bowman was the one who woke up first and took his body out for a spin, and also the part where Bowman was the one to verbally provoke the thugs first before handing the reins back to him. Bastard.
“Also,” he adds testily, “I was doing just fine by myself, so no thanks for the help.”
“ your technique is passable -- you could stand to work on your manners, however. thinking you a helpless civilian, i came to your rescue with all due gallantry. does that not deserve at least a scrap of gratitude? ”
she says it all with a gentle, and the glint of danger in her eyes so easily visible when she felt the impact of her knuckles against solid bone travel up her arm has now melted like dew in sunlight. still, her hand throbs dully -- a testament to her reasons for favoring external weapons.
but, she thinks, she’s not as young as ayer is. doesn’t have as much steam to blow off, either.
( ...well, it’s a bit exhilarating, she will admit. just a bit. )
with a bemused sigh, she shakes out her faintly aching fingers.
“ i’m not sure how much i believe that testimony, but they look reprehensible enough. ”
she nudges the head of the man she punched with the toe of her boot, lightly -- it comes away glistening darkly in the light filtering between closely-packed buildings.
“ i suppose it doesn’t matter. history is written by the victors, as they say; that’s applicable to alley fights as well, apparently, though on a much smaller scale. ”
and boys will be boys.
now that her senses have cleared, a faint whiff of something rank drifts down from further in and envelops her nose momentarily; it’s enough to cause her to have to hold down a gag in that brief second, and her lip curls in disgust.
“ we should leave. the scenery here’s not nearly breathtaking enough to warrant tolerating this sort of company, anyways -- it won’t be any substantial challenge regardless, destroying kids who can barely peel their bleeding lips off the pavement. ”
she turns on her heel smoothly, and then, before striding out into clear daylight, casts a sneer over her shoulder.
“ come. this breed of rabble shouldn’t satisfy you anyways. ”
unrequitedrequest.

It would be one thing to say this encounter, if it could even be called that, is pure chance but that would be a lie. It’s far from chance, not quite planned but not up to the sheer whimsy of fate. It is more apt to say that years of training, years of the Astral programming, has not left him. Not in the many, many years above the clouds, above the skydoms, even in the most secluded land of Canaan. Lucifer has no way to ignore how he was made, how he was programmed. He cannot forget, cannot escape, his role and its many parts.
One such part is the regular assessment of other Primal Beasts.
Which is exactly why he’s here, Lucifer is just barely coherent of how far he’s traveled, barely aware of what he’s doing. Even what little coherency he has about all of this can’t quite stop him. Two thousand years of pure routine is hard to break in a few days.
Two thousand years of routine is what has lead him to this pier, on the lookout for deep reds and blonde hair. It would be foolish to think that Chevalier would appear on their own, if they even could. Lucifer isn’t aware of what technology the ones running the Ark have but if they could drain his core of almost every ounce of power he had at his disposal.
Then certainly, certainly, Chevalier was the same if not worse off.
The thought that Chevalier, who had as he recalled merged with a human, may have been drained of their powers similarly occupied him. It could be potentially hazardous to both Primal Beast and the one bonded to, Lucifer can recall a fair few Astral experiments with someone bonded that went…
Awry would be putting it nicely.
It gives him a sense of urgency, not overpowering but when Lucifer finally finally glimpses the woman he’s looking for the primarchs head snaps up in attention before gently calling out.
“Chevalier.”
“Or are you her bonded, lord of Albion?”
Lucifer does not know which is in control, if there is a chance of it at all, but he knows on some levels he cannot be entirely ignored by the Primal Beast. Even if they tried, he can continue to persist. There is always some means of finding them, some means of monitoring.
her first response is... a snort.
“ your rumored omniscience is lacking. introduce yourself, before calling someone by an old title. ”
it’s a statement rather than an invitation to be acquainted; it’s obvious she knows who she is by the way her eyes narrow and how her fingers curl around the strap of her bag.
-- a bag which squirms, gently, until a golden-furred kitten emerges from the main compartment, green eyes wide and questioning.
she is drawn to the primarch by a force beyond her own control; vira allows chevalier to leap to the pavement and pad gently over to lucifer, tail held high. she remains the picture of nobility -- as much as a beast can, when limited to animal form -- and does not rub up against him, or sniff, but instead takes a seat at his feet, awaiting further prompting.
chevalier’s mind is clear, quiet; vira is inclined to believe she is scared, before the reality of the situation comes to light -- she is reminiscing. the primal is withdrawn from her bond, allowing only the vaguest impressions to flit across their link -- once again, vira is confronted with the fact that despite all gentle appearances, her companion is ancient, foreign in a way that she, born and not created, cannot fully understand.
a light is shined into her eyes and she can feel her body piecing itself together, bit by bit, from motes of glowing dust. not unlike iliad merge --
vira shakes her head.
she wishes she could. ( maybe she will, someday. )
“ i am vira lillie -- former lord of albion, bound in a true pact to chevalier, knight of the primal beasts. ”
she names her companion, and a tinge of recognition pushes at her senses; the presence in her mind shifts from unknowable to increasingly familiar, and she can feel her primal half coming back from a long expedition into long-forgotten memories.
the scent of sterile chemicals tickles her nose, and for an instant she is somewhere else --
it passes in a blink.
this time, it is unmistakably the chevalier that she knows that drags her back. there is too much there for a human to process so soon; much later on, she can see it all, but not yet.
gently, she is coaxed away from further exploration, and vira exhales as the world around her is drawn back into focus.
“ is there something you want from me, supreme primarch? or is there something you want from her? the line is not entirely clear now, so i suppose your answer makes no difference. ”
she barks a dry chuckle at her own small loop of logic, and the kitten at their feet trills by way of agreement.
“ she has lost access to many of her abilities, and cannot resume her original form. her mind is intact -- but, well -- i feel remarkably human, for the first time in quite a few months. if that answers your question. ”
after vira became the lord, most of albion only had contact with her through the arena.
it was customary for the lord to display their strength openly and honestly; without an ideal to aspire to, without a figurehead to flock to, the students would lack a singular source of motivation beyond their own drive. a place so rooted in its own harmful traditions thus pit its academic residents against the lord herself often when vira took the seat.
a challenge given is to be accepted unless extreme circumstances dictate otherwise. that is their law.
so, when she was not submerged in political maneuvering and maintaining her connections, vira fought.
fighting was a way to clear the mind, for her, but the stench and applause and oppressive atmosphere of the arena did nothing but remind her of the day she became lord; it only further clouded her thoughts and sank her further into the murk.
( an outside observer would note a peculiar penchant for conducting her battles outside of the city rearing its head before long. )
no matter what, winning a duel remained second-nature.
so as her will to exist eroded, she only became more untouchable. her admirers in her days as a student paled in comparison to those she accumulated as the lord-commander; her prowess eclipsed so many before her as she became a success story for the academy’s methods as a whole.
look upon vira lillie, noble daughter, who climbed to the top and outpaced even our most accomplished instructors; surely the system is not broken, surely this accomplishment is all that matters. surely this is all right, for a child of only 15, to head a nation of her own.
her reputation blossomed into an even blend of respect and fear.
and even then, she could only think of the capital city of agastia in the mornings --
well.
she supposes that even this sort of being pales in the face of others she’s seen. but it’s still a bit jarring.
massive, muscled, insectoid. surely she fits better among the denizens of crises than vira herself; a delicate woman ( in appearance, anyways ) plucked straight from the pages of a storybook, unwelcome in such a claustrophobic mousetrap of a place.
she can feel eyes on her, even when she cannot see them; she’s not embarrassed, but rather, intrigued. the locals hide not from fear, but from a desire to enact playful trickery, she thinks --
-- not that she appreciates it.
the one before her, however, does not hide. similar in appearance to some of the denizens, but with an entirely different air.
maybe they are not as in their element as she first thought. maybe she and they are unified in their unfamiliarity with this sea.
so, she guesses, there’s nothing to lose. a shot in the dark is her best bet at appearing nonthreatening and perhaps gaining information. ( there’s a lot to lose, really, but it is helpful to think that there isn’t. )
“ excuse me. would you be so kind as to walk with me? I would be grateful for a sort of... companion -- you see, I am rather... out of my depth, here. ”
@knightmorph
the noise of heavy thuds, grunts, yells. it’s a fight.
it’s her first instinct to break it up, of course. ingrained habits rarely do truly disappear.
but there’s a slight complication.
vira makes it all the way down the alleyway before realizing lyst’s weight isn’t on her hip. not anymore. it’s been confiscated, taken hostage by some entity unknown proclaiming it for her own safety ( or for the safety of others. )
what a notion. she would never wield her sword against anyone who did not absolutely deserve it. that she swears, wholeheartedly.
( really, she’d swear most anything to get lyst back. or maybe even certificus. )
well --
-- it’s not favorable, she thinks, and she feels a bit animalistic every time she does it, but she’s no stranger to giving someone a gauntlet to the jaw. or, rather more constructively depending on the situation, a knee to the stomach. the sigh that spills from her lips is not anxious or concerned, but rather, exasperated.
but a knight who is without weapon is still a knight.
so the man who whirls about at the sound of her steps and leaves his cohortst to deal with their victim -- a heavily uneven fight, she notes with distaste -- she slams him across the face with a fist armed in metal, and his chin snaps to the side hard enough to almost be heard.
he drops instantly; a marionette with cut strings.
he seemed, perhaps, in that split second, surprised.
but there is no time to consider and perhaps find humor in the prospect of a man like him being so surprised to see her. time, here, is of the essence. she expects to find their chosen target beaten and bruised. she expects to have to raise her hand against the last ones now without the element of surprise, but as the one before her falls to the dirt she notes that his fellows have been forced to do the same.
white jacket, white hood, bandaged hands -- well, if she were ever to meet him, it would be in a situation like this.
“ I wonder what you did to gain the ire of these ones? ayer. ”
