Lets Love Baby
FINAL PAPER ''A PASSAGE TO INDIA''
Edward Morgan Forster had borned in London and his son was architect. He had written this novel “A Passage to India” in 1924. He was writing about independence review than he visited India two times. Indıans were colonies of British. This novel is based on his experiences in India in 1920’s. He declares us the relations, prejudices, missunderstandings and the less of knowledge and science of East. India which is colonie of British raj was under humiliation. He was against to British Raj and it tell us about Indian’s freedom movement in 1920’s. This book had won “James Trait Black Memorial Prize”.This novel had selected one of the 100 great english works of english litterature by Modern Library. (some knowledges from appendix and wikipedia) . To summerize; there is a british teacher Adele who has come to India and there is a woman Mrs. Moore. And she has a son who wants to marry to Adele. Ronny is a city magistrate. And Aziz is a muslim doctor. Physican. Fielding was a teacher who defends Aziz all the way. One day they all met in the Islamic temple and Aziz warned Mrs.Moore not to taking her shoes off before entering the temple. They were having a bridge party and when Ronny saw her mom while she speaks to Aziz he repriminaded her for being in a relation with an indian. Ronny was impolite. When they met to discuss the Marabar Caves they had tea than Adele stayed alone with two indians when Ronny saw this he got mad. And Mrs.Moore was very nice and tell her son that Adele can give her own decisions. The Nawab Bahadur made them to make a car trip together. Adele decided not to marry Ronny. Than Aziz and Fielding had began to be friends they tried to understand their backrounds, culture. For example he showed a typical wife if Indian man and they discussed political things of their countries. Than Aziz, Adele and Mrs Moore went to train station. Aziz and Adele started to like each other. In time they wanted to understand eachother but Adele was worried. She was scared to become anglo-indian. Differenties of culture appears. Adele went into cave and than she dissappeared. Everybody thought that Aziz assaulted her and attacked her except the Fielding. He defended him till the end. Fielding has the rights of justice, respect and he was not on a side he was objective. Mrs.Moore had kept away because she could give a report about Aziz’s innocent. Than she killed. Everybody thought many suspicions. There were many doubts about facts. Mrs. Moore is taken away because she could clear Aziz’s name. Adele told that she was hallucinating. Her sacrifice was amazing. She had no support, no friend, no english officials left behind her. Although, tryings to understand eachother Aziz was dissappointed and he became an anti-british after all. Adele left India. Stella and Ralph are children of Mrs. Moore also. Aziz had a doubt about if something between Adele and Fielding. But he was wrong Fielding was married to Stella. Aziz found out this but he was angry to Fielding because he seems that family like his ennemy. Than Aziz went next to Fielding. They made boating and crashed eachother. Fielding and his wife were together and Ralph and Aziz were together inside boats. They could not become real friends with Fielding because of religion, culture, politic, the point of life views but at least they tried and at least they had started somewhere. They were not best but they were not ennemie. And in the end those words shows up; not now , not yet , however… There are culture, religion, speaking (idioms) , politic conflicts. A skin color, a point of view and the way they live are different. For instance; Dr.Aziz warned Mrs.Moore to not to take off her shoes off when she enters to islamic temple. That is rude in Aziz’s religion. That shows the difference between British and Indian’s religion. Adele’s complaining about India is showing us that British humiliates India’s location and typical issues. There were such a big colonisation. There were racism also. Because their skin color were different also. Indians have dark skin. So many people were making exclusion in India. The way their act make us comment like there is racism for sure. Indian people were under press and under humiliation and colonisation. They were colonies of British in 1920’s. E.M Forster made so many experiences and he wanted to declared us this situations by giving examples and telling stories. He wrote books about independence movements. Ronny Heaslop who is son of Mrs. Moore saw her mom while he makes a speech with Aziz. He got mad because he did conversation. That makes Ronny racist and ununderstandable, humiliative person. But Mrs. Moore was not like her son. Ronny was mad because he saw Adele with two Indians also. And his discriminative personality like the other british came up and he got angry. Mrs. Moore was understandble. She was the one who try to break prejudices and misunderstanding between east and west people. Because she told that Adele can made her own decisions. Fielding, Adele and Mrs.Moore and one lawyer were trying to understand and they were trying to think like they are equal. They were doing emphaty. That was the humanity. There should not be exclusion between anything. As my opinion; British were of course wrong. For instance; Nelson Mandela has a quote which can explain this situation ; “No one is born hating another person because of the colour of skin, or his backround or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than it ia opposite. Even though he was african they were being humiliate like Indians too. That is so bad. For many many years The United States Of America were humiliating black people. They were given bad jobs and that is why they were poor. But now the president of The United States ‘Obama’ is black person. These were just some examples of world’s countries exclusions. Before the E.M. Forster’s visit to India there was a World War 1 (14-18). There was judgement and discrimination. There was not justice. If something like case or a bad thing happens in a situation, Indians were directly blaming without questioning. In this novel; Aziz arrested for attacking the woman who he was going to marry. Only one lawyer, Fielding and Adele were thinking like humanist. There were cruels also because of discrimination of East and West. Mrs. Moore had been killed because of this crime. In this story there was sacrificing too. Adele sacrificed herself. With her report; no friends, no british officials, no support left. But she knew that Aziz was innocent and she felt to give true statement. Politic view were maden with exclusion also. Fielding and Aziz could not make mutual points about their religious rules and politic states. We can see that one Indian wanted to understand and break judgements but in the end of all of his tryings he dissappointed and he became anti-british. To being “Anti” to a race and to make it general to all kind of that race is the most wrong thing that people could do in this world. You may not love everything in the world but you can not decide this according to a people’s race or religion or skin color or politic or any of those criminative things. This novel demonstrate this to us extremely well. There should be piece and fraternity between the races and between the countries and between the people who has different religion or culture. If something is different and weird, strange from our lives we do not have to judge directly. We so not have to be same with them but we can learn, understand and we can be open to all kibd of thoughts so that we can improve ourselves. We should learn the different things. If we like we can change. But if we do not like we can just stay how we are before. Nobody can judge because we stay or becauae we change. What is this? Why we are in a competition? Everybody is free to feel how they feel. They might not believe even in a religion why do you care? This is that person’s life. You should make it your life and your issues. You can not decide people because of their cultures. You can have only some idea because of their culture but it has to be just a guess from the start. If you try to get know each other, you may find something inside yourself also. May be you are going to feel like Fielding and Aziz. They did not succeeded but at least they tried. That was in 1920’s. Now we are 2014 we should have broken these fool thoughts so many years ago. Unfortunately, we still have those kind of people. I am saying this with a shame. You should find an initial piece with yourself and than you should be kind to the other cultures and to your own native people too. So many people make initial war too. You should be open to know other nationalities , cultures. May be you are going to like them more. May be not. Even if you do not like you are not going to judge you are going to have learned new thing. To go around the world is wonderfull. To know the foreign people and make new foreign friends may be a boy or girlfriend you are going to like that feeling which makes you feel wonderfull to find mutual and very common or special issues between you and themselves. To go around the world is going to make you wiser and more joyable. I would like to go India now too. I would like to see their life without hearing or reading somewhere. Now, I want to go and see and live it by my eyes and by my feelings. I want to medidate like them and talk to them. It is not only India I have been many places but after this book I added India to my future list. Mixing the cultures and making a hybrid cultures that you and that person create is an awesome feeling. No discrimination yes fraternity. I am not saying that we have to love everybody and everything. You may separate by their characteristics but it can not be because of the race of that person. We have to get rid of the Anger and Judgefull eyes. You can feel all feelings ; happiness, sadness, enjoy, fun , you have to cry than you have to clean up your tears by yourself and move on! If Fielding and Aziz lives in our current year (2014); they may have succeed this time because they had made steps but failed. They tried but society found them wrong and inproper. Society was thinking one Indian and one British can not socialize. They were like slaves because they were colonies. If they socialize there comes up always a problem. That shows that they have wrong stereotypes between them. As i make a conclusion of my comments and this experienced story; the main idea that wants to demonstrate is the East and West Culture’s conflicts. Prejudices, missunderstandings and sacrificing, blaming without questioning. And the independence movement of Indians. Also there is dissappointments. There is humanism of some people too. old minded people can stay old and ordinary and they can just live their own rules. We should have to live how we want and we should be free and we have to have liberty. We have to fight for it if we do not have freedom. We have to have some balance too. You can do everything you want. You can go everywhere you want. We have come to this life one time and there is no next. So make it a life that you are going to love most. Mix cultures, mix everything. If you want change sometimes.Do not judge, try to not hurt. If you do accept, forgive; continue. Learn to make your mistakes your experiences. My other thought about East people is also they had some wrongs too.It is like; not accepting new knowledge and new improvements, invents. They should understand and improve with an inspiration of West. To have a piece inside of us, make yourself drive in the right direction. You can BE LOST if you KNOW THAT YOU ARE LOST!
