JAMES + MENTAL HEALTH HEADCANON
james is not a psychopath. yes. you heard me. james is not a psychopath. a psychopath is described to have: major antisocial behaviours, extensive callous and manipulative self serving behaviours with absolutely no regard for others. repeated delinquency, violence and crime. heavy impairment to emotion and cognition. while some of these traits may seem evident - such as very vacant emotional responses, killing animals and eventually killing a man whom was going to harm alyssa. but you can see how he begins to develop and shape as a person/character. how he begins to feel guilt and remorse, how he cares for others - was unable to kill that dog towards the end of the show.
james experienced a severe trauma when he was very young. he witnessed his mother commit suicide right before his eyes. a trauma such as this is highly influencing and traumatic on the developing brain of a child that is unable to understand the nature of what he had just witnessed. the events of our childhood shape the way our brains develop and many personality disorders are a result of traumas as a child due to the way our brain is still developing. the killing of animals could very much be an attempt to understand death, to process it and even an attempt to FEEL something as he is unable to feel anything after living years in a state of numbness.
i don’t think he’s a psychopath - at all. he’s deeply troubled from a severe trauma. i’d go as far as saying that he has a mild form of antisocial personality disorder as some of these traits are similar to those above. or perhaps even a variation of borderline personality disorder in terms of these symptoms: unstable sense of self, unstable emotions and frequent feeling of emptiness; dangerous behaviours and potential self harm.
so no. he’s not a psychopath but does that excuse shat he’s done? no. not at all. killing those animals was wrong. killing that man was wrong - despite it being self defence. those behaviours are inexcusable and the fact that he spared one dog does not make up for the animals that he’s killed in the past. i won’t be erasing that.

his response brings a small smile to alyssa’s lips and she tosses the keys to james. ( how passive he had been in the past as compared to his current ambition ! it’s astounding how much he has changed – how much she has changed him and how much he has in turn changed her. ) she hurries forward to the boat and grips the side, knuckles white as she hoists herself over and lands on its surface. ❛ hurry, come on ! we’ve gotta get out of here. ❜ it won’t be long before leslie wakes up and calls to report them, so they must move quickly and without error this time. ( coming here was a mistake, alyssa knew it all along. ) ❛ ya think he’s woken up yet ? ❜
quick behind her, doing best to keep pace as feet hit sandy ground. boat is pushed closer to the water and a swift push against boat allows you to hoist yourself up and into the cab. “move. i’ve got it.” key slips into the ignition and foot finds gas, giving a slight kick in order to get it moving. there was no looking back, no chance in going back to the life that they had both left behind. he’d made a choice that day - the plan to not only kill her - but to leave behind any inclination that he’d have a normal life. but you didn’t want to kill her, no - how easily this girl had made home in your mind, rerouting your thoughts of the world and life before you. it’s her voice that breaks your thoughts, a shrug of shoulders.
“probably. he won’t find us.”

boat keys in hand, alyssa glances over her shoulder. the sight before her is so flagrantly human, so unabashedly pathetic. she shudders at the mere notion of it – staying in that fucking crackhouse with leslie, all trashed and reeking of old cigarettes and alcohol. but god had she wanted to see him, hoped he had changed – that is, before it all went to absolute shit ! before she discovered her father’s secret, before he hit the dog and disappeared, before she gave him what he had coming, what he had deserved all along ! a piss - poor excuse for a father he is, and alyssa has known it all along, but knowing and accepting are worlds away in definition. ( but you WANT him, alyssa – oh how you long for different circumstances ! ) she turns her head sharply, facing james, moving forward from this chapter of her life.
❛ can ya drive this fuckin’ thing ? ❜
you had received more than what you had bargained for the moment you had climbed in that car with her. the moments after that followed were something close to a domino effect, piece by piece falling over in order to reveal a larger image - a larger plan. something larger than what you had originally planned for her, yes, death was no longer an option. you’re on her heels, following close behind as she glances back - a question stated without a known answer. how hard could it have been? you drove a car - straight into a tree - how much harder could it be to drive a boat?
“give me the keys.”
i’ll be back later. gonna bop around & maybe make some icons.
It’s strange. A lot of the time you don’t register the important moments as they happen. You only see that they were important when you look back.
