Emma's face lit up as she took the bag, lifting it up and down to examine every inch of it. The wrapping and bow were colorful, so pretty that she felt just a little bad for opening it.
The candy was sweet, but not too sweet, and she savored the feeling of it melting in her mouth. She beamed in approval, but before she could eat another, the postcard snatched her attention instead.
In awe, she ran her hands over the postcard, tracing the colors of the lake, the blues and whites all swirling together. There was a sudden warmth in her chest, envisioning Alphonse and Edward searching shops for this very postcard, just for her.
"It's perfect," Emma murmured before very carefully tucking both away in her bag. It was easy to wrap both arms around Edward’s neck from her position in his arms a bashful smile on her lips. “Thank you...” She gave his neck a squeeze, then let out a small hum as she thought about his question.
"Nothing much. Mr. Mustang's been procrastinating again today so my auntie gave him a longgg lecture." She answered his question with a mischievous giggle. There was something else clearly on her mind, in the way her smile felt the tiniest bit forced and how short her story was from her usual ones
Immediately, the candy seemed to be a good pick, if the way Emma lit up and opened up the bag after inspection was anything to go off of. The postcard seemed equally appreciated though, and that felt even better. It was the part of her gifts he and Al always worked hardest to pick out. Ed smiled and shifted one of his arms to hug her back, "You're welcome, I'll pass along for Al that you liked them too." he promised before he was given the update. A short one, and he managed not to frown if only barely before he snorted, "So he's being as lazy as always, glad to hear nothing's changed there." he'd overheard Hawkeye's lectures first hand and done nothing to hide his amusement when he did. He could imagine the lecture this time went just about as well as the last one.
It was just a small update though, of just for that day by the sounds of it. Usually he would hear about her and Hawkeye, or the rest of the team, or maybe something that had happened in Central that was big enough that Emma had heard about it too. He liked hearing them, that's why Ed always asked, and he remembered being a kid and always feeling excited when grown ups and older kids wanted to hear what he had to say. Sure, Mustang was avoiding doing his paperwork again, but something just seemed off about it, "...what else is going on?" he tried, convinced there had to be something. He didn't want to push Emma too much in case she clammed up, and maybe it was nothing, but with everything else that was happening, Ed had to admit he felt a little string of worry start to weave through his head.
Nothing happened while he and Al were gone, right? Nothing serious?
|| @changing-over-time ||
The spot tucked between Ed's neck and shoulder was heavenly, with the perfect amount of pressure and warmth. She didn't want to pull away, not yet, but knew realistically if she was clingy for too long, he'd get suspicious.
Then there was the question. So he did realize something had happened. And it sure had.
Emma's mouth opened and closed shut with a click. Her hands fidgeted with the postcard, and her breathing picked up softly. Suddenly, the appeal to look at it was much stronger than Ed's golden eyes, which shimmered with concern.
Ed can be trusted-he can, she knows it. He's proven it over and over.
But what if-?
She shook her head physically, forcing a wide happy smile. "Nothing, Ed, I promise. I'm okay." The lie burned on her tongue, and her chest squeezed painfully.
Her gaze darted to his state alchemist pocketwatch, and the action summoned a tiny traitorous voice in the back of her mind.
What if he knew about this already?
She could only hope he wouldn't push the subject further.
"We'll really do all that?" She asks eagerly before pulling out a dress she enjoyed wearing and was comfortable enough to stay in all day.
The options almost feel overwhelming. "Maybe a picnic and the toy store? And ice cream too." She nodded decisively
The entire day together...Emma couldn't remember the last time they had done this, if at all.
Riza's hug catches her by surprise for a moment. But not so much as the words spoken.
Emma fidgets in her Auntie Riza's embrace at the acknowledgment, unsure how to respond at first.
The embrace is warm and provides a welcome reprieve from her earlier emotions, allowing her to sink into it with a soft sigh. "It's... it's okay..." Emma faltered, licking her lips nervously before continuing. "I don't want you to be like my mom anyway... but I love you too," she replied, her voice unusually soft.
The relief was clear on Riza's face when she heard the eagerness to her niece's voice. She knew things were hard on the young girl; she knew them first hand to be quite frank since she had lost her own mother at an age even younger than Emma. There was one very glaringly obvious difference though. Emma was able to be placed with someone who, although inexperienced, worked to take care of her while Riza, despite still having a father, had to fend for herself. Even though she was worried about doing something wrong as she navigated this new parenting role, she at least knew she couldn't possibly be worse than her father had been.
A soft chuckle escapes the Lieutenant as Emma declared her decision on their itinerary for the day. A picnic, the toy store and then ice cream. "Then that's exactly what we'll do. I'll even let you have Hayate's leash, if you wish to bring him along with us." The pup did love a good day at the park after all, and perhaps she could be a little lenient today and let him have a touch of people food as well as a few licks of vanilla ice cream. It sounded like a very enjoyable day. They hadn't walked out the door yet and she could see the improvement in Emma's mood, leading Riza to note that she would definitely need to make sure she set more time aside for just the two of them more often. She knew Emma seemed to enjoy Roy and Rebecca's company, but she had never seen her face light up like it had when she told her it was just the two of them. It even made her a bit happy herself, knowing her niece seemed to enjoy their time together, just the two of them. Here she had thought she needed Roy or Rebecca to be in attendance so the girl wouldn't be bored with just her. Taking a moment to just let herself embrace Emma for a few more beats and truly enjoy it, her arms finally begin to loosen around the girl with her hands now resting on her shoulders to give a light but firm squeeze. Her heart feels a little warmer as she she looked over the child's face, a warm smile gracing Riza's lips. She felt a small bit of relief when Emma told her she didn't want her to be like her mother. If she did she would truly try her best, but at least gave her something to work with. She could simply be Emma's caretaker as her aunt, though she still resolved to love her as though she were her own child. Emma deserved such after all. Perhaps this could prepare her for if she ever did have children herself. Who knows. Giving another soft squeeze to her shoulders she finally released her and gave a playful ruffle of her niece's hair. "You get dressed then, alright? I think I'm going to go get changed myself. I've come to realize that I might be a... little over dressed."
Emma nods at her aunt's instructions, pouting slightly at the sensation of her hair being ruffled. She feels a bit too old for that kind of affection now, but doesn't protest verbally. "Hayate, come here!" She calls out, completely forgetting she's still in pajamas, as she locates and chases her aunt's dog around
A few minutes of coralling a squirming, playful dog, she returns to her bedroom. "Stay!" She commands, placing some authority in her tone in lieu of Riza's tone when speaking to him. Black Hayate's bark was all the confirmation that he was finally listening.
The young girl finally begins to change into the dress she picked earlier, giving it a few spins for her audience member, who has taken residence in her sheets. To complete the look, she dons an old white bow, one that her mother had given so long ago.
"Heel boy," she gestures, and Black Hayate follows her bounding steps into the living room. "We're ready!" Emma announces by the door, shoes on in seconds. She's unable to quell the excited rocking of her heels, grabbing her aunt's leash for the dog.
Her Aunt Riza chose something simpler as well, and for a brief moment, she realizes it's one of the rare times her aunt seems... ordinary. But it isn't in a bad way. For a few moments, she can be free to imagine it's a simple day with her aunt, who isn't always away, busy with the military, and her parents are alive and well, so-
Her expression naturally becomes more somber as she daydreams, almost longingly, but she is quick to school it into something happier.
She nodded appreciating that he seemed to respect and encourage her game of tackling the people in her life, she enjoyed. "Energy...I think I'll save it for Mr. Breda." She decided, but the mention of potential gifts completely distracted her line of mischief planning.
Her entire face lit up with delight. No matter what she received, Emma was always grateful, placing each souvenir carefully on her desk and displaying it proudly.
"Course I'm interested in candy, Ed," she huffed, almost insulted that he would even joke otherwise. Lowering her voice, she glanced around as if being watched before speaking into his ear. "You gotta give it to me now, though, before I go home or Auntie Riza's gonna take it and put it away for later.." Riza wasn't the most lenient when it came to sweets and snacks, so smuggling it home or finishing it quickly were her options
Breda would definitely take a little more energy to be successfully knocked down, unless he played along for Emma's sake like Al did. Ed could see it go either way but just nodded along in support at her plan, guessing that she had only been on the grounds for a short time if she hadn't had a chance to try tackling anyone else on the team yet. Not for that afternoon, anyways. He wondered if that meant Hawkeye had recently gotten there herself or if Emma showed up on her own. Again, both seemed possible. He tilted his head slightly closer to let her whisper in his ear the request for the candy sooner rather than later. Smiling a little, and guessing that meant her aunt really was around now and maybe even nearby, Ed dug around in his jacket pocket, "Well you're in luck then." he told her back quietly, producing a small, wrapped bag with a few pieces inside and tied off with a bow. Just like any of the family owned shops around Central.
It seemed like the best way to get something different, and he tried to pick something that was familiar but what the shop owner said was popular around town. Ed passed the bag to Emma before digging around his jacket and pulling out the postcard, "And this one, Al spotted for you and we thought you'd like, what do you think?" it was a painting of the lake nearby, all soft colors and almost bleeding into each other. With both gifts offered, he resumed keeping her held up and supported, "So, what have I missed while I was gone? Anything good?"
|| @changing-over-time ||

She squeals as he catches her laughing cheerfully.
"No just you...I can't bowl down Alphonse he's too big," there was a hint of disappointment as if not being able to personally offended the girl.
Emma as predicted does not let go despite beginning to grow too tall to be carried around much longer.
"Did you bring me back anything?" She asked innocently enough but hoping the answer was yes. He always went to somewhere interesting and new to the girl, so despite her aunt's persistance always she would always whisper her request him quietly before he departed the station.
There was a very, very high chance that if Ed happened to let slip to Al that Emma wanted to knock him over just once, that it would happen. Especially if she was going to sound so disappointed at the idea that she couldn't do it, "Well that just means you store up more tackle energy for the next person." he reasoned with her, seeing that apparently setting her down wasn't an option yet. She was getting bigger now, and it was a little awkward, but Ed managed to keep her up enough to still be carried and keep heading for the gate to leave. He hummed at the question, pretending to think about it like he couldn't remember, "Let me see, I could have sworn there was something that I picked up while we were gone....or two things."
It was always a small request, and Emma always seemed excited at the idea after Ed offered the first time. Since then it just seemed to have stuck. Al's idea was to get a postcard every time they went somewhere new so she could actually have the name of where they went, and they both tried to pick one they thought Emma would like the most out of the options. Sometimes it was just a picture of the town itself, but they made sure to pick one up at every train station they stopped at. And of course, something a little more interesting than just a postcard, "I'm pretty sure I found a bag of candy from a local shop that was pretty good. You wouldn't be interested in something like that, would you?"

Emma at the sound of her knock sits up rubbing at her red rimmed eyes; a sign that she had been either crying or the verge of tears. However her next words take Emma completely by surprise. "With you?" She asks softly almost in disbelief processing it all. Auntie Riza really seemed to mean it if it was meant to be a surprise. "No I want to go still! Please?" A rising feeling of guilt has her stomach twisting uncomfortably. She had reacted initially without even asking... Now that the expanding balloon of misery and hurt had been popped she's now filled with endless questions, rattling them off as she leaps off her bed in a hurry to rifle through her clothes.
"Where-where are we going? Do I dress fancy too? Is it just us or is Mr. Mustang or Ms. Rebecca coming too?" The girl would clearly much prefer the two of them alone, but did mention the two other adults she was familiar with and relatively enjoyed being around.
"If you're still up to it then of course we will go." Riza responds, a fond tone in her voice as she steps into the room completely now and sets her plate on the girl's dresser. She watched as she had immediately perked up at hearing today's plans were for the two of them and not just the military officer now raising her. It made the Lieutenant chuckle softly to herself. She couldn't help but wonder if she had been like this when she was a child, back before she had lost her own mother. Unfortunately she struggled to remember that far back, when things were pleasant and happy as a child; all her childhood memories she could recall were lonely, cold and painful. Just the mere thought made her back ache.
Shaking the thoughts from her mind as she was drawn back by Emma's rapid fire questions, Riza's amber gaze shifted tobthe girl as she went through her closet. "It doesn't have to be too fancy. Just dress in what you're comfortable in. I thought it would be nice to go to the park. We could stop at the café I frequent and we could pick our lunch and some sweets and have a picnic. And you could run around and play if you wanted. Or the circus is in town, I believe.. We could see if we can get tickets. I thought we could visit the toy store and you could pick something, I believe I noticed you eying something in the window anytime we pass it lately. We can go out for dinner if you wanted, and finish with ice cream. Just the two of us. No Roy. No Rebecca. Just Emma and Aunt Riza." Riza muses. Now that she thinks about it, maybe she's a little over dressed. She'd change before they go. For now she smiles, lowering herself to Emma's level to pull her into a hug. "I know I'm not the most motherly figure you could have been placed with.. but I hope you know I am trying very hard.. and I appreciate your patience with me, Emma. And I hope you know I love you.. Very much, I do.. I should tell you more often.. And I'm going to work on that too."
"We'll really do all that?" She asks eagerly before pulling out a dress she enjoyed wearing and was comfortable enough to stay in all day.
The options almost feel overwhelming. "Maybe a picnic and the toy store? And ice cream too." She nodded decisively

It was amazing how fast word could travel around Central Command, if that's even really what happened. For all he knew Hawkeye had said something in advance when it was made clear they were arriving that morning. Then again, it was also hard to miss a guy walking around in a bright red coat among an ocean of blue uniforms and Ed did have a bit of a reputation. Maybe that was all it took to hear that Fullmetal was back in town. Within just six hours of getting off the train and booking a room at the hotel for himself and Al, he had made it to the military building, handed in his report, did actually catch up with the rest of Mustang's team, and was starting to leave the grounds. While in town he may as well brush up on some of the research at the library and check in on a few open ended leads they had.
At least that was the plan, until he rounded the corner of the sidewalk and had about three seconds to register the girl running and jumping at him. Ed gave a slight start and scrambled to be able to catch the girl so she didn't fall as well before grinning, "Nice to know I was missed." he teased, keeping a hold of Emma before moving to set her down. Or try to, depending on how intent she was on holding on, "Did you bowl anyone else down while running over here?"
She squeals as he catches her laughing cheerfully.
"No just you...I can't bowl down Alphonse he's too big," there was a hint of disappointment as if not being able to personally offended the girl.

The sudden touch softens her demeanor her resolve to stay angry wavering. Emma bites her lip at the question before settling on an answer.
"You're dressed all fancy to go out." Her voice is stiff, stung but surprised? Not a chance. Auntie Riza was always really busy after all. It was the weekend finally and her auntie already seemingly has plans to leave for the day. "It's okay, is doesn't matter." She pushes Riza's hand and her plate of food away the scowl having made its return. She stands to go off to her room her lip wobbling slightly.
Of course it doesnt surprise her that Emma has noticed she was dressed nicely today, but she certainly wasn't expecting her to react like this. She had been trying to make sure to spend more time with her niece, knowing she needed more than just someone to watch after her. She was nothing like Edeard and Alphonse. They were an abnormality where Emma was exactly what a 9 year old should be. "Emma-"
She tries to speak but her niece has already pushed away her breakfast and we took to her bedroom in the new apartment they now shared. A room all to herself, Riza was truly trying her best to provide for her. A sigh passes the Lieutenant's lips as she rises to her feet, grabbing Emma's plate and knocking on the door before opening it and peaking her head in. "And who said that you're not coming along with me? I was planning to surprise you. That is, if you'd still want to go with you being so upset now."
Emma at the sound of her knock sits up rubbing at her red rimmed eyes; a sign that she had been either crying or the verge of tears. However her next words take Emma completely by surprise. @changing-over-time asked: "Are you gonna give my auntie those flowers you're hiding under your desk yet?" Emma pulls back an expectant look on her face lowering herself down from the tips of her toes.
Whispers | Currently accepting.
So she noticed. They were difficult to hide, he supposed.
The Lieutenant was not one for showy or impractical gifts. He could list several reasons why, her father's mistreatment of her being the first. She had minimal belongings and few gifts. Everything had a purpose. Nothing frivolous. That was how her father was and what he instilled in the daughter he wanted nothing to do with.
Flowers were extremely impractical. They were beautiful, but other than providing oxygen and something pretty to look at, they didn't serve much of a purpose. They were temporary. That would be what the Lieutenant would say, not knowing the meaning behind the ones Roy picked.
Gardenias. Among other things, they meant secret love. That was what they were known for.
"I can't," came his quiet reply as his eyes flicked over to look at Emma, "Or at least I can't say they're from me. There are laws in place that prevent me from doing so, which your aunt is aware of. I'll put them on her desk and say they were a delivery from a secret admirer. Unfortunately, that's what I have to do."
Because loving his Lieutenant was not something anti-fraternization laws allowed.
She tilted her head brow furrowing at this information. Laws like that didn't make any sense..
"You can't?" Emma huffed fustrated before slowly she nodded. Though she was clearly reluctant to not be able to say anything.
"I can say their from someone really special...so she doesn't throw them out and takes really good care of them." Emma promised a fierce resolve in her eyes. "If I convince her, she'll love them." The young girl beamed at the colonel in hopes to reassure him.
{CHEERING ] seeing that sender is scowling, receiver rubs their thumb over the furrow between sender's brows (the idea of riza cheering emma up is just so ;v;) @changing-over-time
She sees the way her niece is scowling from where she stands in the kitchen, though over what she isn't entirely sure. No matter, she couldn't let her sit there and be angry and pout all day. Approaching Emma, she kneels before her, rubbing her thumb between the girl's brows with a soft chuckle. "Now what is this look for, hm? You were in such a pleasant mood earlier."

these are so adorable
The girl let out a shout at being suddenly grabbed struggling for a good minute sobbing and pleading to be let go and hitting the chest of whoever was holding her.
The pounding heart beat she felt stuck out as strange...why would the men be nervous? Then she registered there was a voice...a really nice and kind voice talking frantically near her ear.
Was it....her?
The fight sapped out of her as she went limp. "Auntie Riza?" she croaked out.
"You came..." the girl whispered for its all her sore throat could muster, her hands clenching her aunt's uniform with a grip just as tight.
She must've really worried her, Emma thought idly because her auntie rarely held her like this. Usually she was the one doing the hugging. It was nice and warm in her arms, a stark contrast to her cold room. Her bottom lip wobbled. "I'm okay...." she sniffed. A half truth, she was sore all over but any cuts hadn't been bleeding for awhile now.
Perhaps Riza should have considered warning her niece that it was her approaching and taking her in her arms. Relief had taken hold of her so completed though that all the Lieutenant could think to do was hold her young niece close to her. She was relieved when Emma began to calm her down, allowing her to hug her a little closer, letting her breathing begin to slow and settle along with her nerves. She could take on a hundred men without fear, but with Emma involved.. she had been absolutely terrified. The sounds of her small voice drew Riza's attention down to the small dirty blonde, her arms tightening to give her a reassuring squeeze.
"Of course I came for you.. Please tell me you weren't afraid that I would let them take you away?" Her voice was soft yet shaking as she let her let her head gently rest atop the girl's. The poor girl.. For her to worry that her aunt would just let these men keep her and take her away.. Riza knew she wasn't the most maternal woman there was, but she had thought that maybe she hadn't been doing too badly.. It seemed she had a lot of improving to do. Gently pulling back. her amber eyes looked over her, noting every scratch and cut she could see. She'd need to be cleaned up, but at least nothing looked serious. They would be tended to once they were out. They just had to do that first.
Releasing Emma, Riza turned her back to her, taking a slow breath as she carefully set her pistol down in front of her. Her gaze looked to her niece from over her shoulder, offering her a soft smile. "Have you ever had a piggie-back ride Emma..? The Colonel used to carry me like this if I got hurt when we were younger. It'll be the easiest way to get you out of here so you won't have to run.." She explains calmly, smiling a bit more. "Climb onto my back and wrap your legs around me to help keep you up. I can at least try to hold some of your weight with one arm but since I'll need the other for my pistol to get us out of here, I'll need you to try to help keep yourself up too."
At her auntie's question guilt flooded her for even having considered at several points that she wouldn't come for her...
Of course, she was lonely and she hated every minute of being by herself most days...and even when she didn't listen Riza still loved her, she knew that at least....but it had taken so long to find her.
Emma shakes her head to snap out of it, electing to placate Riza's worries instead. "I knew you would find me," she says olive eyes finally meeting the other.
Riza's next instructions to climb on sparked a look of recognition. "I did. My big brother used to do it with me all the time.." The girl confirmed biting her lip as to concentrate on the situation rather than her dead brother.
Normally any form of carrying she would reject, she was too old for it no matter how much she longed for it. She was nine now and had to act older. But her legs did hurt..
Using Riza's arms as support she scrambled up holding as tight as she could. Burying her face in her aunts back she closed her eyes heart racing as more shots rang out. Even being used to the sound never made it easier. Her breath trembled but no matter what would happen she wouldn't let up her hold.
