Prayer to Set
{I was inspired to write this and two other pieces while at work one day. If they speak to you, please feel free to use them yourself.}
He of great strength,
Show me how to be strong.
He of thunderous voice,
Tteach me how to be heard.
Lord of the Oasis,
Comfort me in Your strong arms.
Lord of Storms,
Lead me safely to the other side.
Set, Red One,
Let me love myself as You love me.
Set UPG/ Rant
People want to make Set out to be mean, insensitive, apathetic and disloyal. but honestly thatâs the biggest lie I have ever heard. Yes, he may operate on tough love, but people seem to forget the word âloveâ.
He helped me process and accept so many appiffanies without complaint. Heâs been patient with me, answers my questions honestly, and listens intently.
Never once has he been cruel or dismissive of my feelings. He understands exactly where my pain comes from. He knows I am flawed in many ways, and regardless of how well I handle the ever-changing nature of things (or not), Iâm still going to experience inner turmoil. He knows I am human. He loves me anyways.
Heâs even expressed that he feels similarly. He knows what itâs like to have your blood boil. He knows what itâs like to be down right confused and frustrated. He knows what itâs like to feel rejected and kicked down and tired. Set and I have a lot of silent and verbal understanding.
No, heâs not going to be the one to rock me in his arms and tell me everything is going to be okay while I curl up and wither away; he knows that wonât help me.
He wonât baby me and shower me with gifts and promise to make everything better and cushion me, because he knows that wonât bring me satisfaction or fulfilment.
Set pushes me to let go of what wonât help me, navigate the rough waters ahead, and maintain myself to the best of my abilities. But he also reminds me not to take life so seriously when I donât have to.
He knows that Iâll handle what life throws at me one way or another. He understands the sentiment of pain, but also understands that thereâs something to be learned from it.
And he lets me complain, as long as I get up afterwards and do something about it. As long as I am always trying to better myself in some way, Set smiles from above.
And when Iâm tired, beaten down, and frustrated, he tells me itâs okay to take a break. Failure is not permanent and can be overcome. He tells me to rest and try again when I have the energy to do so.
He knows I wonât get the hang of life in a day, weeks, months, or even years. He asks me why I push to run so hard when life isnât a race. And when I collapse on the ground, he gives me space to regain my strength. But if I continue to lie there afterwards, heâll force me to my feet again.
Transformation takes a lifetime. Set is no stranger to this. Itâs hard to learn how to be happy, to better yourself, to just let go. Especially when youâve been taught your entire life not to.
Itâs hard to shed your skin. But the more you allow yourself to die and be reborn into something better, and just accept life for what it is, it will get easier. The pain will lessen but lessons will stick.
Set has taught me to love the randomness, uniqueness, and unexpected joy of life. Heâs taught me to step back, take deep breaths, and just be without guilt.
I am an animal too, and I should not be denied the pleasures of that. But I should also not allow myself to succumb to bad habits and fear either. This is exactly what kills pleasure.
Heâs beautiful, hilarious, and brings a party with him to any good occasion. He laughs heartily and without restraint, and he loves unconditionally. Heâs strong and wants others to be strong. He knows what he is and is unapologetic about it. He has an eye for beauty and gazes at it often.
And through all of this, do you know what the main thing he wants? Thanks and appreciation. Such a simple thing that I often donât feel is enough for him. I wish I could hand him the world. And tell me again how cruel he is? I donât think so.

A Crash Course in Warding
Letâs just start a series of crash courses in witchcraft, since sometimes we need to learn things the quick and dirty way. Today, letâs talk about wards.
What are wards? Wards are protective energy barriers. They keep things out. You can place them around your home, certain rooms, even on certain objects. With practice and clear intentions, you can focus the wards to block out everything or only certain things. Weâll get to that in a bit.
Why should I ward my space and my things? Wards can keep out all sorts of things you donât want in your home. They can block out negative entities, wayward spirits, mischievous entities, demons, and (if youâre really good at what youâre doing) even gods. Some people ward their divination tools so they know there are no spirits tampering with the results.
So what do I need to do first? Cleanse. This is very important. Wards are kind of like walls, or perhaps more accurately, bubbles. If you donât clean the space first, you might trap things inside your ward bubble. You do not want that. There are lots of methods of cleansing, from burning sage to spritzing oil-infused water. Find a method youâre comfortable with and cleanse everything youâre going to be warding.
Iâve cleansed my home/item. Now what? Now we ward. Iâm going to give you a couple methods. Letâs start with my favorite, incense warding.
Incense warding can also be done with spritzes of water/essential oil blends or herb-infused water if you canât have smoke in your space. Whichever youâre using, you want to have a blend of protective herbs. Bay leaves, cinnamon, ginger, mustard seed, and salt are some great options that you can find in the grocery store, no fancy witch shop necessary. If youâre using incense, make sure youâre using natural incense and not super cheap stuff thatâs artificially scented. The magic is in the herbs, and you wonât get that from fake scents.
How to Incense/Spritz Ward an Item
Smoke or spray item.
Visualize the smoke or spray clinging to the item and wrapping around it like a tight blanket, protecting it from anything that would cause harm (or interference, etc.).
How to Incense/Spritz Ward Your Space
Pick a place to start. I always start at my altar, but itâs up to you. If youâre doing multiple floors, start either at the top or bottom floor.
Moving continuously to your right, smoke or spray along the walls and door frames. As you go, imagine a barrier being formed around the walls, ceiling, and floor, pushing outwards to fill the room. Visualize the smoke or spray forming the barrier to keep out anything that will do you harm. [If you have a hard time with visualization, you can simply focus on the intent of the smoke or spray keeping things out.]
Keep moving right, following the layout of your home, making sure you get all the closet spaces. You basically want to outline the entire area youâre protecting, whether itâs youâre room or your whole house.
For multiple floors, repeat on each level.
For big layouts where there are rooms in the middle, go around those rooms as well.
I like to reinforce the wards over outside doors, windows, and mirrors. These are all passages of sorts, and when I reach them, I use the incense to draw a pentagram in the air over them. This is entirely up to you.
Youâre done when youâve reached the point where you began.
So why do we go to the right? Is that important? Kind of. Going to the right is like going clockwise. Itâs about making things and progression, where going to the left or counter-clockwise is about deconstruction or reversal. [I read this idea in a witchy book a long time ago and will try to find a source when I can. If you honestly donât feel it makes a difference, do whatever youâre comfortable with.]
Can I place wards that keep out certain things but not others? Sure. When youâre going around your space/warding your item, your intent is whatâs important. I like to ward out entities that mean harm - itâs nice and general and doesnât keep the fae out. Some people might want certain spirits and not others. Have your intentions clear in your mind as you place your wards.
Thatâs neat and all, but what are some other ways to ward? Letâs list a few.
Symbol/Sigil Wards
Choose (or make) a symbol or sigil that has protective properties. Iâve done this with Plutoâs astrological symbol because I worship him and itâs my way of being like, âHey, Pluto. Please protect me, kthanxbai.â Pentagrams are nice and basic witchy/pagan symbols if you like them.
Draw the symbol over doors and windows. You do not literally have to draw it. It can be in water, incense smoke, or just your finger against the surface if you want.
As youâre drawing, make sure you have your intentions in mind - that nothing harmful can pass through this door, that the windows remain closed against entities, etc.
Energy Bubbles (if you have control over your energy)
Pick an item - any item.
Get your warding intentions in mind.
Channel lots of energy into the item. Visualize it emanating from the item in a bubble to fill your space.
If youâve got mad skillz, you can form the bubble to the walls and be super exact with where its barriers are.
Vocal Wards
If you like spoken (or thought) spells, come up with a small chant to protect your space.
You can repeat this chant as you focus on your item being protected or as you walk around your home, protecting every room.
This is really great to incorporate into basically any other form of warding and gives your magic an extra bit of oomph.
Iâve heard wards can âfadeâ over time. True or false? Wards are just energy. Like all energies, they can disperse and weaken over time, or if something particularly nasty puts effort into destroying them. Redo your wards every so often (I do mine every few months, but itâs up to you), and especially before spiritual interactions. I also like to do mine after Iâve had lots of company, to kind of clear out familyâs lingering energies and reinforce what I donât want in my house.
In general, the intent of your wards is the most important part. Know what you want to keep out. This concludes our crash course on warding. Now go forth and protect some stuff!

I think Iâm going to sign up for the KO beginner course, I would really like to get more involved with the Netjeru.
Does anyone have any experience with any of the KO courses?
KO shemsu here, Iâd be happy to share my experiences! Do you have any particular worries or questions?
Actually something did come to mind today as I was reading about Remetj vs Shemsu. What are the divination and initiation like? Do you get to choose which deity/deities you devote yourself to? And, if you did the initiation for Shemsu and at a later point decide you donât want to work with the Netjeru anymore, could you revoke your vow or would you be stuck forever? @ edgepopesupreme @ sha-beasts-and-jackals since you offered your perespectives as well I would of course also like to hear what it was like for you
Okay, I donât want to leave you hanging, but Iâve been sick and itâs hard for me to string a sentence together at the moment. If your questions werenât answered or you want a new perspective, let me know and I can talk more. Also if you have more questions and any time. You can also message me. Otherwise, Iâll post when I am more coherent.
<3
No worries, you should focus on taking care of yourself, I hope you feel well again soon!
Of course I would love another perspective on my questions. Thatâs why I asked everyone who offered, I like hearing different takes.
But, when you feel better of course. Take all the time you need, and again, I hope your health gets better soon
I am feeling much better now! Sorry for the delay. Hereâs my take:
What are the divination and initiation like?
Well, first of all, you know you must go through the Beginnerâs class. At the end of the Beginnerâs class, you are asked if you would like to stay on as remetj, which more or less translates to citizen or subject. You donât have to stay, and are never pressured into it. And you are still welcome to use our forums as a guest, though you wonât be able to have full access as a guest.
Once you agree to stay on as a remetj, you may submit an application for the Rite of Parent Divination. If you meet all the requirements â which arenât a lot, but mostly there so you are sure about it â you fill out and submit a questionnaire. After that, you are usually contacted (they tend to happen in clusters at the end of the month, generally) to set up a time where you can chat with Rev. Tamara. She then performs the divination, and after you receive the results, you can ask questions and discuss it. If you accept the results, you can choose to become a shemsu, or follower.
As a shemsu, there are some basic expectations, though they are not really enforced (as in, no one is going to be checking up on you making sure youâre doing everything 100%, but that it will be encouraged for you to adhere to them as much as possible). They arenât a lot, mostly doing senut (a daily ritual) at least once a month and putting your Parent(s) before all other gods. Mostly, itâs left between you and your Parent(s) how it happens.
However, you donât have to accept the results, or even just wait on them, and stay as a divined remetj. That is okay too. But the RPD is never repeated; those are you gods in Kemetic Orthodoxy. So you see, itâs best to wait until you feel like you can accept the results. Becoming shemsu is never forced, never a requirement to stay Kemetic Orthodox.
If you agree to become a shemsu, roughly a week later thereâs a ceremony where you are given a name, and all shemsu new and old take the oath (which is just to serve your gods and the community to the best of your ability).
If you ever feel like you cannot continue being shemsu, you are welcome to step down. But of course, your Parent(s) remain the same, and your name is yours.
Do you get to choose which deity/deities you devote yourself to?
That is sort of a complex answer. The short answer would be no, but the longer answer is actually âkinda.â The divination is done, and you can choose to accept it or not, but it is never redone. However, that doesnât mean you canât have relationships with other gods, even deep, meaningful ones. What the RPD means to you, in the end, is very personal. But as a shemsu, or going beyond that into priesthood, your Parent(s) is the god(s) you serve.
While thereâs no proof, I suspect the gods do take into consideration what we want, but moreso itâs about what we need, and the two arenât always the same.
Please, let me know if I can answer any more questions~!
Thank you for your reply! Along with @taswauâs answers I got a better idea of what KO is like. Though yours answers differed a bit, so I suppose that there is some room for interpretation too. Do either of know if this is how Shemsu/priesthood was done in Ancient Egypt? Did they also have a Rite of Parent Divination? I already brought up this concern earlier with Taswau, while I do want to get more involved with the Netjeru, and KO does offer great resources, a community, and lessons, it doesnât sit well with me that I canât decide who I am devoted too. Of course the argument can be made that if I have a very strong connection with a deity or two they thereâs a decent chance they show up in the Rite of Parent Divination, since they are already very present in my life. But the idea that there is a chance that I would have to serve a deity I feel no strong connection to before the ones I do makes me a bit anxious. I can get to know the deity, I can work with them, but if there is no connection, that wouldnât make for a great relationship. I can leave KO of course, but then my path would end there.
Does anyone have experience with that? Doing the Rite of Parent Divination when a deity you didnât worship before shows up?
I donât know, I just fear that no deity I consider myself devoted to shows up. Maybe then I should join a different branch of Kemetism, or start one myself eventually.Â
So the Rite is not an ancient practice, no.
In antiquity, one would be more likely to serve their âhomeâ/regional Netjer - for example, if you lived in the Cynopolis, youâd probably serve Yinepu, Wepwawet, and/or Anupet most prominently, as They were the regional gods. We arenât in Kemet though, so we donât have regional gods - the RPD is meant to sort of make up for that. It gives Netjer the chance to claim folks as if they were in a certain nome/region!
Priesthood was a thing though! But⊠thatâs not a requirement of KO folks. Itâs something very few are actually called to do, so if thatâs a fear of yours, being a priest for a god youâre not connected to, try not to worry. Priesthood requires both the desire and the vocation - that is, your Parent god(s) must also say yes, they want you as a priest.
There is def some interpretation available, which is nice! Thereâs not much thatâs really set in stone, aside from the bylaws.
As for Names showing up that one didnât previously worship, a close friend of mine was divined a daughter of Wepwawet, Beloved of Aset and Sobek - she had worked with Sobek, and a little with Wepwawet, but never Aset - she was actually quite intimidated by Her!! But still, She showed up - my friend is now getting to know Aset and Her facets, and her fear of Her has lessened quite a bit.
The fear of not being claimed by a Name you love is a heavy fear - it was one I had. Itâs one that I think many to most folks have. I took the divination partially because I just needed to know. Thankfully, I did get claimed by Yinepu, but as Iâve said, that isnât always the case. Usually seems to happen in some way, but not always.
Another Housemate ( @daughter-of-the-red-land ) I think has experience in that area.
