It could’ve been her. All she’d had to do was say yes. Just one word, and everything could’ve been different. “Shut up,” she begged, not in malice but in desperation. She didn’t want to hear anymore about how Chelsea knew best and what she’d wanted didn’t matter. “Just shut up,” she said, lower now, stepping in and taking one last drink for courage before she kissed her. It was quick but thorough, and she forced both of them to take a step backward to keep balanced before she pulled away, mouth tingling with alcohol and need. “Stop acting like you did me a favor. You broke my heart.” It was quiet now, a whisper since she’d closed the space between them anyway. This was what she was too proud - too angry - to say sober.

Chelsea could feel the tears swelling in her eyes, but she refused to cry. She had made the right decision. She had spent many nights convincing herself of it. The kiss took her by surprise, her eyes wide as she felt the familiar lips touch her own, and she forgot how to breathe. Her eyes fluttered shut as she balled her fists at her side, stopping herself from taking hold of James. Her chest was rising rapidly as some space was put between them. “I know.” She spoke in hushed tones. “I broke my own too.” As if that made it any better, but she needed her to know it wasn’t something she had done lightly. A tear rolled down her cheek. Okay, maybe she could cry.

She pointed the bottle like a sword as she spoke, as if to enunciate each word. James wasn’t in denial that she wasn’t over Chelsea. But she didn’t know it still hurt like this. That she could still feel like she was bleeding out over it. Surely she would’ve been drained out by now? But the woman had a unique power to always find the right string of words to cut in a new way. Because nothing could be further from the truth than that James deserved better. She’d always known she was punching above her weight being with Chelsea, she was just grateful Chelsea didn’t seem to notice or care. Until she finally did. It made sense when Chelsea left her life - their life - behind to build something new and better. James could understand why, even if it gutted her. But this? This made no sense. “That’s bullshit. You don’t get to decide who I want to spend my life with. You don’t get to take that away from me.” Past tense, James. Careful.

“Clearly I can!” Chelsea snapped back before she could stop herself. One hand reached up, running it through her hair in frustration. Frustration at herself. She shouldn’t have come back. She should have just sent her well-wishes and stayed at home. “I made that decision for you and I would do it again.” She tried to sound firm, but the crack in her voice wasn’t helping her case. “The last thing I ever want is to hurt you, J, no matter what it seems.” She was softer now, her shoulder slumping. “But you deserve someone who is always there for you, who isn’t stuck in the office until 3am, someone who will always going to put you first.” She shrugged. “That can’t be me.”

He usually hated the “getting to know you” fodder, but when it was her, he didn’t seem to mind so much. Who was he trying to impress? She knew him. Better than he wanted, probably. “I prank call hotel rooms, mostly,” he said. “Or pretend I know how to build things.” Not as much time for that lately, but still. “I finally made that bookcase,” he added. He’d talked about it for ages but always had an excuse why he couldn’t start. When Willa was born, it was the one thing he felt he could contribute to her room at her mom’s house. Lord knows he wasn’t skilled enough to attempt a crib. Her loaded maternal grandparents had bought all of that.

Shaking her head, Courtney gave his arm a little nudge with her hand, laughing. “Loser.” She couldn’t help but mock him a little, before her eyes widened a little. “Damn, you have been busy.” She gestured between the two of them. “Look at us both go, one building furniture, one getting new furniture, I think we have officially become adults in the last few years.”

James was naturally a little pissed to lose custody of the champagne bottle, so she made sure to steal it back when Chelsea was done and take a big swig. She felt bolder now, and she’d regret all of this tomorrow, but right now it didn’t matter. She had swallowed her anger and her heartache for long enough, and this may be the only chance she got to let it out. “You knew what you didn’t want,” James reminded her, as if either of them could forget. “Or I guess it was just who you didn’t want, wasn’t it?” Since she’d gotten the career and the success and the new life and still wasn’t satisfied. It had never been about that, had it? It was always about not wanting a future together. If only  Chelsea had managed to let her know sooner. Before it was too late.

Wrapping her arms around her waist, both to keep her a little warmer, and as a shield against James’ words, Chelsea just stood there. It was like she was frozen to the spot. Her fight or flight was screaming at her to run away, but she would just be proving James right. “That’s not true.” She whispered, shaking her head. “It wasn’t that I didn’t want you.” She swallowed hard. This was definitely a conversation that she should have had on the night that she said no, but she was too much of a coward. Hell, she didn’t even want to have it now. “I just couldn’t marry you, I’m not the woman you should be spending the rest of your life with.” She sighed softly, leaning against the wall. “You deserved better than that, better than me.”
