All for a single Dollar...

So to get strait into it I was serving a lady, let's call her Mrs Ripoff.

Mrs Ripoff's grocery bill came to $21.50. She gave me EXACTLY $21.50. She counted it herself then I picked it up and counted it again then put it in my register and gave her the receipt. Did she walk away & get on with her day? No. Instead she persisted that I didn't give her $1 change. I explained I was 100% certain she gave me a $1 coin & not a $2, I even looked through my one dollar coin section to see if there was a two dollar coin I had mistaken.

Now I know what you're thinking; Why didn't you just give her $1? Well if I re-lived the moment I would have based on what followed. But at the time that kind of thing feels like a personal attack and I knew I wasn't wrong.

At this point I thought she had given up and left the shop. I was unfortunately wrong.  Mrs Ripoff had gone to the service desk and gotten my supervisor to come over. ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS!?!? IT'S ONE FUCKING DOLLAR!! So anyway, my supervisor who we'll call Sarah for now, came over and counted my register with me and guess what? That's right, my register was not over $1.

Now at this point I thought it was finally over but Sarah talked to the lady & then gave the lady $1... WHAT!? Are you fucking kidding me? Why did we go through and bother counting all my money if you were going to just give her the $1 anyway? It makes no fucking sense, especially seen as we just proved that lady wrong. I understand if "we need to keep the costumers happy" that's fine, but then why did we count my register?

Anyway that lady apparently said that she's been short changed a few times at our store but if you ask me I think she's intentionally trying to rip us off.

P.s. If you're reading this and think "it's okay to scam big shops a bit, it won't make a difference to them", let me tell you this: You are not scamming the store when you get more money than you're supposed to at the checkout INSTEAD you are stealing from the individual that is serving you. You heard me right. Our money has to be exact at the end of our shift or we're the ones that pay for it. A man once scammed me out of $20 when I'd only just starting working at the store. New and scared I just gave him the extra change thinking I must have fucked up. From that I got an official written warning, 3 of those and you get fired. So please think twice.

Winks

I feel like winking has become an old fashion thing to do. At least I judge that based on the fact that it's mostly old men that do the winking, and my sexist boss, but that's another story.

I usually just ignore the winks or treat it as a "thank you" because I think that's what some men mean it to be. But there was one occasion where it just made me incredibly uncomfortable. Now let's call this man in questioning Mr Pedo. He's not as bad as he now sounds (I hope).

So Mr Pedo winked at me. Twice. In the same transaction and at no point where it meant "thank you". That's already pretty bad but something I'm sure I could usually shake off quickly. What made me so uncomfortable was knowing this man was the groundsman at the primary school I went to when I was 6.

Okay yes I am officially an adult NOW, but can you at least see how that transaction is even a little wrong?

I.D. please

Back when everyone still had the ability to sign for things on their Efpos card we had a related policy. This policy was that if someone buys over $100 worth of cigarettes, pays by card then signs, they have to show their ID matches their Efpos card.

So a man comes into the store, let's call him Mr Asshole. Mr Asshole buys over $100 dollars worth of blah dee blah blah, you get the point, he needs to show his ID. I ask him kindly and explain that it's just policy. He doesn't comply but not just that, he's a real dick about it all and being incredibly rude which gives me an actual reason now to want to check his ID. He grabs his shopping before I can and says "my ID is in my car".

Now at this point I've learned that I should have called the store manager but at the time I hadn't been working the job long so instead I just called for general assistance. A young guy comes to help and I explain the situation. The poor guy follows Mr Asshole to his car  to then return saying "he just got in his car and drove off".

Well fuck that guy.

Fuck that guy because he gave me an anxiety attack from the intense confrontation of the whole thing.

The hopefully anonymous blog about working in a supermarket (despite the fact that the first 2 followers know me...).

I'll post about pet peeves, stories, the characters I come across & whatever else is relevant. ALSO I'll be changing people's names and if I start a post with "Today.." that just means I wrote it the day it happened but it may be weeks/months/days old.
