This blog is dedicated to Queen’s University Athletics and Recreation and the endlessly talented Golden Gaels.Â
My journey in sports photography began back in 2014. After undergoing a medical emergency that halted my own personal athletic career, I picked up a camera to start documenting my high schools women’s rugby team with no prior photography experience. Despite no longer being able to play, I found a create sense of joy and team spirit from still being able to attend games that I would not otherwise be able to attend if not for photography. Quickly, sports photography turned into an intense passion which escalated my interest to the point where I knew that I would not be able to give it up. Upon arrival at university, I became involved with The Queen’s Journal as their sports photographer, which, 3 years later, granted me a job offer to work as the official sports photographer for Queen’s Athletics. I happily accepted.Â
Social media is the key to being a successful sports photographer in more ways than just having a medium to post content to online. Social media allows for the opportunity to connect with athletes and potential clients, as well as maintain an up-to-date online portfolio for future collaborations to view. As well, social media allows for anybody to reach out at any given time. The constant ability for conversation allows for personal and intimate connections to be made between the photographer and the client! The majority of individuals encountering this blog with be the athletes themselves, parents of the athletes, or potential employers. The main focus of the blog is to post up-to-date photo albums from current sporting events occurring across Queen’s University, be it varsity, club, or intramural. Unfortunately, it appears that Tumblr decreases photo quality, which makes it essential to have some form of “contact” section on the blog in order for individuals to reach out if they would like higher resolution versions of particular photographs. As well, most individuals will be trafficking the blog via a mobile medium (probably coming over from a link on Instagram), so adaptability between the web and mobile versions of the blog is very important! A large portion of the demographic of this blog is University-aged athletes, therefore, it is essential to post content in a timely manner, as well as have an intuitive, simplistic design for the busy University student who is just looking to do a quick browse!
