Quickly Changing Life

Just as quickly as technology changes it seems as if my life is changing as quickly as well. My father moved to Georgia the day after Thanksgiving and my mom is moving as soon as the house sells. With just one more semester left of college and one more New York summer I will too find myself down in Georgia. It is crazy to think that before I graduate both my parents will be living in a completely different state than myself. I can only hope that this pushes me to work even harder to leave upstate New York as for as long as I can remember I have wanted to move south. I cannot stop thinking about how in just a few short months I will have earned my bachelor’s degree, being the first grandchild of my paternal grandparents to obtain a bachelor’s degree. As I am finishing up with finals I can smile and say this is all worth it. . Well I say that until next semester at least!! It’s time to work and hibernate for the harsh and cold winter and by hibernate I mean work.

Thoughts on Convergence

When I first thought about convergence I thought about it as a generally bad thing. Convergence to me meant losing much of my childhood. All the Disney movies I’ve had on tape for years had to be thrown away because we no longer use VHS players. I must watch an advertisement every time I log on to the internet in order to access basically any information. It seemed as if everything was changing so quickly. Over the course of the semester I learned that convergence may be annoying at times but it can also be convenient. Having a “black box” with endless possibilities and having to look at and advertisement while searching the internet is not so bad, especially since the online content I am searching is free because of the advertisements. All in all as times change it is inevitable that the different technologies will be updated and from here on out I will embrace these new technologies as opposed to turning my cheek to them.

I am one of the few who still watch TV..

Watching television is not quite like it was years ago when you had to wait for it to debut on tv. Now you can stream your shows online, record them or even watch them from one of the many "black boxes" available. Personally I have always been a fan of cable. Since I have had my own apartment I have always paid monthly to have cable (even though I shouldn't because Charter sucks). I use cable as something to help me unwind at night. After I put in a 15 hour day between school and work, I really enjoy laying in bed and watching TV. One thing I will say though is that I often record shows on my DVR so I can fast forward through the commercials. I do also love binge watching shows on Netflix but that's only if the full serious is available because I can't binge watch something without watching all of it.

Just A Thought

With technology taking over the lives of children these days, I'm wondering how differently their memories are triggered than mine. At the end of every fall I smell what I call "the smell of winter" and it triggers Christmas memories, snowfall and any type of outside activity. Just as when I taste the Estrom milk chocolate almond toffee my family sends us from colorado every year reminds me of Christmas Eve. My senses are often triggered and they bring back these "real life" memories. Now that children are buried in in video games and the internet, I'm wondering if their only sense will be triggered through various sounds associated with the different games. Thinking of this makes me very uneasy as some of my favorite times are brought back through taste and smell..

Digital cameras aren't just for taking pictures of your children on their birthdays anymore, they take such high quality photos that the photos could be published in a magazine. Floppy discs that could only hold one or two projects evolved into a "little stick" that can essentially hold your entire years worth of homework. The list goes on and definitely ages me, Regardless of how old it made me feel, it was nice to see some of the random things that were apart of my childhood that I had completely forgotten.

Ebooks are for some but not for all..

As I have mentioned in basically every blog post, todays society is much more technologically advance than it has ever been. `You can do anything from look at restaurant online to even read a book. Ebooks are available through websites like amazon and I personally don't know what the craze is all about. It makes sense that people like it because it is available on a heavily used resource as opposed to taking up a bunch of space however I personally like reading from an actual book. Not only do I have bad eyes so it is hard to read from a computer screen, but I also like to go through and highlight important facts, Even though many books online allow you to highlight and add various notes I just feel like it's definitely not the same. I could never rent a text book for college online because I feel like I would not learn the same from it as I would from an actual book. Now this is only the way I feel about Ebooks. Many people, my mother included, absolutely love reading books off of devices such as the kindle or the nook.Reading books online is definitely specific to each person as I've encountered many people who like the portability of the Ebook and others, like myself, who just don't "dig" it.

When I saw this photo I laughed. This is media convergence at its finest! It's crazy to think that in just a few short years kids will not likely even know what a VHS tape is. I remember when a DVD player was the cool thing to have and now its a Blu Ray player or just any console like Xbox or the new Playstation that can do a little of both. I guess that means its time to sell all my VHS Disney moves. Just kidding, I'm not one of the cool kids who has an all-in-one black box, I still have a VHS DVD player duo!

Fan Produced Content

With todays society being so technologically advanced, almost anyone can be a "Producer." It is easy for those who want to produce content to get their hands on the newest and best equipment available (granted they must be able to afford it) . Recently fans of different shows or movies are recreating them to their liking, Some fans will take a movie or show and give it a completely different story line or ending while other fans will just simply recreate the exact scene using themselves as characters. Personally regardless of what project the fans take on I really appreciate their passion. The caption with this photo says it all. Most of America is in panic mode because of the Ebola scare yet they are blind to what's already going on. I can not even fathom the fact that there are so many starving people, homeless people, starving and abandoned animals. The list could go on! I just think it's nuts that people don't pay attention to what is going on in their everyday lives. I see at least 10 homeless cats a day and I always think to myself how badly I feel. Remixing Todays Society

Content in todays society is almost never new, but it is recreated. People are always remixing already produced content which essentially lets them recreate it into something that is their own. The link below is a video of content created by many different users and than edited together by those at [adult swim]. Each video is interesting in its own way but when they are "remixed" together it takes on an entire new level of interesting. Personally I really enjoy watching remixes and mashups especially trippy videos like this one.

Potty-Mouthed Princesses Drop F-Bombs for Feminism by FCKH8.com When I first watched this video about these little girls standing up for womens rights I thought it was awesome! I thought it was great that these little girls are learning young that us women need to fight for our rights. Now I am not in any way a femminist however some of the points made perfect sense to me. Pay inequality, rape and violence is definitely evident in our society however this is not only true for women but also for men. I was not offended in any way by the "F Bombs" but what threw me for a loop was when the little girls mentioned that society needs to stop teaching boys how to rape. Really? This is the message that these girls are being taught? Women can rape too and even though statistics are much higher for men raping women, much of the time it is because rapes against men go unreported. Maybe FckH8 should focus more on equality less sexual violence and rape for everyone rather than filling these girls heads with bullshit facts.

Movie Theatre's are Not for Everyone

When it comes to going to movie theaters to watch movies, there is definitely a shift in how people actually watch the movies. Nowadays it is almost impossible to go to a movie theatre and look around and not see someones face lit up by their cellphone. Most find this to be quite annoying, Not only are people being obnoxious by being on their phones but this also lessons their intention spans and encourages talking throughout the movie, As talked about in the blog "shushers" a lot of it comes down to manners, Growing up it was never okay to go into a public place with your ringer on just in case it would go off, distrubing everyone around you so why do many people feel it is okay to let it happen while they are in the movie theatre? Why do people feel it's okay to have a full on conversation in the middle of a movie? It's people who do things like this who make those who "shush" them look like assholes, when they themselves are the asshole since they just ruined someones movie theatre experience (in which probably cost them at least $30). Personally I feel like the only time it is okay to talk in the theatre if you are asking a question about a movie. Yes, it happens, people miss parts of the movie because they went to the bathroom or grabbed a snack however if you missed a part of a movie because your head was barrier in your cellphone, then you can be slapped for talking. It's because of people who ruin the experience that much of the time I decide to skip out on the theatre experience and wait for the movie to come out on DVD or on demand. Also as pointed out in the blog "Is Watching Movies Too Hard, or Are Audiences Getting Too Soft"movies are becoming more a convenience. I have to admit because of how quickly movies are released onto DVD or different medias, it is just easier for me to wait until they come out as opposed to spend crazy money on the theatre experience, Also I have to admit, I love watching movies in my Pjs and in my comfy bed where I can pause it and grab a snack if I want, only thing I really miss about the theatre experience is the fact that my cat isn't there to distract me with his cuteness.

Will It Be Worth It?

Midterm grades are in! I am definitely pleased with how I am doing this semester. Seeing my grades was exactly the confidence boost that I needed to push me toward the end of the semester, I know that I should be enjoying my senior year of college but I am pretty much doing the opposite. I am beyond ready to only have to work my job everyday as opposed to doing both. A lot of times I wonder why I pay to go to school while the time I spend at school could be spent making money. I guess I really hope that all the money I spend on school will be worth it, I love and appreciate all the valuable information and experience I am gaining, but is it worth the debt I'll be in someday?
