JUST TO FILL YOUR SHIRT WHAT A LOSER
touyao:
“I smell Cheren.”
❝ I smell hot buns. ❞
ʜᴜɴᴛ → ᴇɴᴅ
How many dreaded minutes ticked by upon the tenuous clock?
The brunette had been awaiting for her fellow companion, Touya, of whom she’d been spending extensive days beside through winters and summers— indeed, the two were traveling still regardless of the unfortunately punitive weather bequeathed upon the duo. The male had, as he alleged, ventured forth to seek out a provincial Pokémon Center, in order to scrupulously stock up on replenishments they’d been needing as of late, pursuing to activate somewhat of a mandatory propulsion in the right direction, henceforth accomplishing more tolerant times spent camping outdoors.
In riposte to the unforeseen memorandum, a frown incriminated athwart roseate lips, eyebrows furrowing whilst she kicks out of her sleeping bag, frosty air reaping goosebumps upon her exposed skin. They genuinely needed the supplies, right? Touko vowed to look after the camp, feigning lucid rationality despite her ulterior motive revealing to represent that she was sheerly not ready to be propelled into civilization at this precise time of day.
— It was her most-cherished time, around 5AM, the sun was brimming to rise and the clouds remained a darkish; yet light; color, a chilly-humid air seeping into her nose as she breathed it in, somewhat of a content sigh flowing from parted lips. A perfect time to train, yes, as well as a perfect time to watch the clouds form and the wind politely breeze against plants, without a sweltering sun burning her forehead and eyes, giving her a disadvantage of vision (hence why she regularly adorned a hat upon her scalp).
With a mellow, almost nonexistent, atmosphere surrounding the quaint camp she’d been seated in, a rustle in the bushes aren’t deemed a difficulty to mark out amongst it all. As a matter of fact, it had stuck out like a sore thumb, her interest easily peaked at the origin of such a clamorous sound; — quickly exchanging from drowsy and (mildly) peaceful, to a more alert persona in hastily formed seconds.
A fist stabs into the crisp earth encompassing the humble tent, head shifting outward, granting beryl optics sight of her surroundings. Perhaps it had just been the wind, (after-all, it almost looked as if it were beginning to start to rain), and she’d only been feebly working herself up (though ‘feebly’ was a never-before-used adjective when it came to describing this particular lass) through bucket-loads of … ah, what was the word? Paranoia.
Perhaps this had just been mere, glazed-through and glassy intuition — or maybe even her ears were playing tricks on her, but the brunette could’ve sword she’d heard a faint grunt leaking of agitation among the rustling of nature’s greens.
Suspicion divided into benevolent fragments, her eyes scan the area mercilessly — and surprise restores the gap left by the skepticism in instantaneous moments once the ‘mission’ was accomplished.
How unexpected.
Such a sight causes eyes to widen rapidly, mouth quivering open in palpable incredulity. Fingers grow numb at an agile pace, eyes unpremeditatedly examining the figure as if it were an illusion, the speculation of them vanishing into thin air insinuating to be considerably ordinary what with the conditions of said situation.
"… Cheren?” Voice emits softness as opposed to her usual strong vocals, volume at but a whisper.
It was a rather cold morning, and far too early for anyone normal to be awake. The watch he had acquired over his journey ticked on his wrist, reading five, yet to the boy, it felt as though it were already early afternoon. Perhaps his terrible sleeping schedule had attributed to that for, if it were the Cheren that had first begun his journey, he wouldn't have ever dreamed of being up at an abnormal time.
However, he was on a mission (what a childish thing to call it!), and he was quite set on trying to accomplish it.
His Pokemon didn't appear to mind their trainer's odd sleeping schedule, having adjusted to it long ago. Whenever he'd apologize for asking for their help so early in the morning, they'd only shake their head as if saying, 'Don't worry about it, we understand.' He'd always smile gratefully and they'd pat him harshly on the back, wide grins on their lips as they laughed. They were kind, thoughtful Pokemon, and he found it amusing how playful they truly were.
As he trudged through the thick forest, his eyelids grew heavy with drowsiness, the cold surrounding him taking stabs at his energy. Coldness made things move slower, so thankfully, he had called Liepard to zoom through the greenery, quietly following its path as he walked along. His eyes scanned the trees, even glancing up at the sky just in case there were a large Flying-Type transporting its trainer somewhere.
If only finding someone were that easy, right? "I feel like I'm playing Hide and Seek," he mumbled, pulling the scarf around his neck higher up on his features. With how cold the year had gotten, he had become used to bundling up, thankful for the many layers in which he wore. As he rubbed his hands together, he noticed his Pokemon disappear into the sea of bushes, his eyebrows raising curiously as it took several moments for it to return.
The Pokemon gestured with his head towards the direction he had just come from, eyeing his trainer, the gaze saying, 'Come. This way.' Naturally, Cheren was confused, the possibility of actually finding them not running through is mind. He stayed put for a few seconds, and when the Pokemon gestured again, he finally cleared his throat and asked:
"Ah? Is there something over there?"
It was a silly question, and they both knew it was as Liepard rolled his eyes. Cheren smiled apologetically, following behind it as it retraced its steps. As he made his way out of the series of bushes and occasional tree, he breathed a sigh once his body had adjusted to sudden openness. However, as he savored the space, his heart nearly stopped at the uncharacteristically quiet voice.
His eyes were wide behind spectacles, and he took in every inch of her appearance. Frightened, as if expecting a predator, slightly messy hair, signalling her early awaking, and her eyes, blue and vivid as they always were. This was her-- one half of the duo he had been searching for. His throat was dry, and he couldn't speak a word.
What could he say?
'Where have you been?'
'Why haven't you contacted us?'
'Do you have any idea how worried I-- we, were?'
Emotions budded within him, showing on his face for a split second as it changed between worry, anger, and relief. Yet, as happy as he were about finding her, he simply didn't know how to react. His face contorted to display a series of emotion before he finally allowed his head to hang, almost as though he were trying to sort out his feelings.
He took a deep breath, uttering a calming sigh, lifting his head to meet her gaze, expression straight and calm. This was just a mask however, for he didn't want her to see how confused with the situation he was. He had spent months trying to find them, yet when the real confrontation came, he was lost.
His mouth opened, whispering a quiet call, as though he were afraid his mere words would blow this illusion away. "... Touko," he murmured, gaze softening as the wind around them blew her hair into even more of a mess. When he had come to terms with this truth that it wasn't a fantasy, he took a step forward, remaining as close to the bushes as possible, not wanting to scare her away.
It was silly-- he was acting like he had encountered a rare wild Pokemon.
"Touko," he said again, this time louder and in a tone that said 'Finally, I've found you'. He let out another sigh, one that was tired yet satisfied, and as he gazed at her, his fingers flexed, his feet rooting him to the spot.
No, it would be too soon to run over to her and pinch her nose and scold her because what an idiot for keeping everything to herself for so long.
