Design of the year award 2012 @ Design Museum

The artist:

Having originally studied experimental film-making, the Dutch designer SIMON HEIJDENS (1978-) turned to product design when studying at the Eindhoven Academy and now applies the spirit and techniques of film to the development of objects – all of which explore his “fascination with evolution” by changing over time to tell a story.

Shade

A responsive skin to the windows of a building that filters daylight into a moving projection of shadows, that translates the ever-changing natural timeline of the outdoor to the static and perpetual indoor space. Shade is a new material that applies as a glass window surface. Through variably blocking or passing light, it forms sunlight into a spacial, graphic projected moving image of shadows. It's surface holds a grid of triangular cells that are each individually able to change their level of opacity, and hence block or pass light. The graphic shadows projected on the floor, walls and ceiling of the space - varying from sharp and graphic, to environing and spacial depending on the time of day - reveal the geometrical patterns of wind that pass the building on the other side of the glass, as choreographed by the measurements of an outdoor sensor. As both the angle of the sun and the patterns of wind are continuously changing throughout the day and year, the perpetual character of the artificial space is reconnected with an evolving, unplanned natural timeline.

MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACKS' Circuits and Wires

Motion City Soundtrack newest album is currently available. Even being a dedicated fan since years, I frankly admit being disappointed by the new CD as the band seems to have irretrievably gone from their original punk/rock sound to a more radio friendly soft rock beat. The album could use a little freshness and imagination in the sound but is still worth listening at.

WE ARE AUGUSTINE @DINGWALLS

Now a growing worldwide phenomenon, We are augustine played an intimate sold out gig at Dingwalls, Camden Town, in last May. The Brooklyn based band was touring for the second time in the UK to promote their first album Rise Ye Sunken Ships, McCarthys' shock response to the suicide of both his mother and brother; a chronicle of the lacuna that the loss of his loved ones has left inside him. Even with guitarist Billy McCarthy struggling with a sore throat, the indie rock trio, which also include bassist Eric Sanderson and drummer Rob Allen, gave an inspiring performance. AN EVENING @SKETCH

Not being fond of flashy mainstream restaurants and bars, I any how decided to go out of my comfort zone and headed High Street to Sketch as I have been widely recommended to at least have a look around. And you know what: this place is just brilliant! From moulded leather chairs literally emerging from the walls, contemporary art pieces, colourful and imaginative painted patterns and all you can dream of disparate chairs and unusual light fixtures, this place is a candy for your eyes. Conceived by Martin Creed, an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist from the UK, Sketch is part of the new artist-conceived restaurant trend that hit London over the past few years. Quite expensive if you go for a full diner or in the cocktail bar, Sketch offers a fairly affordable drink and food menu in the Parlour Room.
