During our morning ritual of hugs and kisses before they got out the car, my oldest son looks back at me and says,"Next month I'll be 10. I won't be kissing you before school anymore." My heart broke into a million pieces. I said,"What do you mean, Daryl?" Innocently he replied, "I'll be double digits, Mommy. 10 is really old. I can't go kissing my mom anymore in front of the other kids." My other son, Ruben, dropped his jaw in disbelief of what came out of his older brother's mouth. He said,"Daryl! How could you say that to Mommy?!?! That probably hurt her feelings!" He turned to me and gave me more kisses and said, "Don't worry Mommy, I'll give you double kisses for me and Daryl if he stops kissing you." Daryl saw how hurt I looked and climbed back in my car and gave me a giant kiss on my cheek. I gave him a huge hug and said,"When you're a grown man, I hope you still give me kisses, son." Tears started falling from my eyes and I quickly wiped them away so he wouldn't see. Daryl then said, "You know what mom? 10 is old, but I guess another year of giving my mom a quick kiss goodbye before school, won't be so bad after all." After they both got out the car and walked off, they yelled out,"Love you Mommy," while waving. I watched them go onto the school yard, greet their friends and get into a game of basketball. I drove off trying to pick myself up. (It's way too early in the morning for tears. I haven't even had coffee.) I'm a little insecure of my son turning 10 years old. I'm proud of the little guy he's grown to be, but a part of me aches for that little boy I once had. I could have sworn it was just last week that his hair was so long and everyone thought he was a girl. It felt like just yesterday he was in diapers.
