Chilean Food Diary

Things to note: Empanadas are everywhere, they only believe in salt (especially during BBQs), they're big on fresh fruits, the first plate was my absolute FAVORITE, my host mom was a great cook, it is typical to be served rice AND fries, their juice is extremely sugary, they aren't used to someone who drinks water with their meal, meals are a lot cheaper than NYC, I often forgot to photograph my food for the blog and memories

Emporio La Rosa

So to all those who know me well enough it should come as no surprise that when I was preparing to come to Chile I researched the ice cream they had to offer. To my lovely surprise I learned Chile had one of the top 25 ice cream parlors in the world, Emporio La Rosa. My first day in Chile my friends and I had ventured off the mall and found one of the shops and i knew I had to have it. When I found another shop about 2 blocks from where I lived I was ecstatic, but surprisingly enough didn't have it as much as I'd even expect myself to have it.

The first time I had it I went with Vanilla, it is just a classical must. I returned about 2 or 3 times which was definitely not enough to satisfy all my ice cream cravings but I tried at least 5 flavors at every visit (the employees probably hated me). I had to have one of the flavors only available in Chile, Miel de Ulmo, but my absolute favorite was Maracuya.

In the midst of learning about Emporio La Rosa I also found out that 3 of the top ice cream parlors are located in NYC. I have made it a goal to visit them before the year is done, disappointed in myself for not even knowing about these places before.

I spent my last full day in Santiago, Chile at Fantasilandia, a pretty well known amusement park in the city. Many Chileans seem to really like the park so I knew I had to check it out. The park was less roller coasters and more rides that flip you upside down and spin you around in circles. Unfortunately, most of the roller coasters were closed when we went as well.

It definitely isn't as big as Six Flags (or similar parks) and the rides aren't as intense but it was still a lot of fun. I could only imagine how Chileans would feel if they saw the rides at amusement parks in the United States. Also, according to my new Swiss friends I need to go to Germany and check out Europa-Park one day, I wonder how that will compare to parks I've been to.

I always crave a milkshake or funnel cake at amusement parks so I went on a mission to find a milkshake and got one right before leaving but they do not have funnel cakes in amusement parks in Chile so the visit didn't feel complete.

I am glad I was able to do something different on my last day in Chile and I had a great time with awesome people I'll definitely miss.

Today I had a great dinner with my host family accompanied by boxed wine out of a melon (so delicious). My host parent's daughter came over with her husband and son, we were able to all converse about many different topics and really get to know each other. It was great to see a Chilean family in an environment they felt so comfortable in and they definitely made me feel like a part of the family myself. They were so excited we got to meet their daughter before our departure and it was so touching how much they always cared about making us feel at home. The meal was great but I didn't photograph that with fear they might judge me or think I'm weird for taking pictures of my food...by the time the melon came out I felt a lot more comfortable with them so taking a picture wasn't a problem (I even mentioned why I didn't take a picture of the food and they all laughed). Dinner today really made me realize how quickly I connected to my host family and how much I will truly miss them. They were amazing in every way possible and I know they have had an immense impact on my experience here in Chile. I am grateful for all they have done for me, look out for the post I plan to dedicate to them.

Meet John, an amazing man I met at ECELA. He is so full of life and I find him to be extremely adorable. So glad I got to meet him and our conversations made my day all the time, hope I one day encounter John again.

Sorry for the terrible picture quality. After visiting the museum, the guide and a couple of the students went to this nice little spot, Chancho Seis. Who knows when I will be traveling to Chile again so I needed to take advantage and once again indulge in a Terremoto. This is a great spot to just relax and they have spoken word and different performances usually held on Friday nights, I recommend it to all. The evening was full of great conversation about the Americas and I was able to see things in the view of a Chilean and how offensive people from NORTH America can be.

El Museo de la Memoria y Los Derechos Humanos

This museum was made to shed light on the crimes committed during the Pinochet dictatorship between 1973-1990 and provides factual evidence of the occurrences during this time so that these events are never again repeated. It was inaugurated January 2010 and honors the victims of the dictatorship and their family members in an attempt to reunify the country. There are different objects, documents and archives in the museum that help tell the story.

When going to the museum it is important to dedicate a lot of time to it. Unfortunately, when we went we did not have enough time to really look at every video, listen to every recording, etc. to have a full grasp of everything but we had a great guide who was very knowledgeable and made sure to touch base on every important fact.

Pictures are not allowed inside the museum so I cannot share any with you but it is something I highly recommend anyone visiting Chile to attend to. The place is rich in history and it was very interesting for me personally to see evidence dealing with things I had learned a lot about in my Chilean History and Culture course.
