Spring Break Part I

Sarah and I left Saturday morning at 5:55 am. We flew across Argentina, headed to Santiago, Chile. We woke up at 7:30 to the sun rising over the Andes as we made our descent into the city. It was a magical start to the day. We met up with our other friend and spent the whole day exploring the city. We walked over 10 miles through the city (according to Annie’s watch), visiting Plaza de Armas, Iglesia Catedral, and el Mercado Central. We then ventured into the Bellavista neighborhood, and enjoyed the beautiful walls and houses covered with street art. Little did we know this would be just the beginning of our experience with amazing street art. After, we had an interesting lunch, including “queso caliente,” or the equivalent of a grilled cheese (direct translation: hot cheese), tomato and avocado sandwich, and an italiano complete (a hot dog covered with tomato and avocado). Needless to say, tomato and avocado is everywhere in Chile. We then took a funicular (outdoor elevator) to the top of Cerro San Cristobal, a beautiful hill overlooking the entire city. The smog covered up a lot of the views of the Andes, but it was stunning nonetheless. After our long day of explorations, we ventured back to our hostel, and went to dinner, meeting up with two other friends from our program! Our dinner was incredible and included some Chilean classics like ceviche (BEST EVER) and pisco sours. 

The following day, we got up early, and took an hour and a half long bus ride to Valparaíso, a port city on the Pacific coast of Chile. The city used to serve as a stopping point for ships travelling between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. It has been called “The Jewel of the Pacific,” and its old city was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. It was the most unbelievable place I have ever been in my short life and I truly believe it to be a jewel. It is hard to put into words why I loved it so much, but the small-town feel, the houses painted every color imaginable, the vast street art and the adorable restaurants and cafes were just a start. Once we arrived, we went straight to our hostel, dropped off our stuff and began exploring yet again. We walked another 10 miles, through the hills of the old city, getting a great workout along the way. We visited Pablo Neruda’s house, La Sebastiana, and El Museo a Cielo Abierto, an open-air street art museum with 20 murals spread throughout a section of the city’s hills. As we walked, we came across better and better views of the city, ocean and port, and each place we stopped, I was overwhelmed by the city’s magic. I can’t wait to return to this city.

The next day, after our friend had left the night before, Sarah and I took a 20 minute bus ride to Viña del Mar. It is “Valparaíso’s little sister,” essentially a smaller, less colorful, but more touristy version of Valpo. We didn’t have much to do, so we planted ourselves on a towel at the beach and read our books into the afternoon. We stopped at El Domino for lunch and had some more amazing hotdogs with tomato and avocado, and headed to the bus back to Santiago, ready to begin the second part of our adventure.

Chilean Food Diary

Things to note: Empanadas are everywhere, they only believe in salt (especially during BBQs), they're big on fresh fruits, the first plate was my absolute FAVORITE, my host mom was a great cook, it is typical to be served rice AND fries, their juice is extremely sugary, they aren't used to someone who drinks water with their meal, meals are a lot cheaper than NYC, I often forgot to photograph my food for the blog and memories

Emporio La Rosa

So to all those who know me well enough it should come as no surprise that when I was preparing to come to Chile I researched the ice cream they had to offer. To my lovely surprise I learned Chile had one of the top 25 ice cream parlors in the world, Emporio La Rosa. My first day in Chile my friends and I had ventured off the mall and found one of the shops and i knew I had to have it. When I found another shop about 2 blocks from where I lived I was ecstatic, but surprisingly enough didn't have it as much as I'd even expect myself to have it.

The first time I had it I went with Vanilla, it is just a classical must. I returned about 2 or 3 times which was definitely not enough to satisfy all my ice cream cravings but I tried at least 5 flavors at every visit (the employees probably hated me). I had to have one of the flavors only available in Chile, Miel de Ulmo, but my absolute favorite was Maracuya. 

In the midst of learning about Emporio La Rosa I also found out that 3 of the top ice cream parlors are located in NYC. I have made it a goal to visit them before the year is done, disappointed in myself for not even knowing about these places before.
