I learned that 卖 means to sell. I also learned that 萌 means cute, I thought that 可爱 means cute. I find it interesting that they say 萌 twice and not once. I wonder why if you put the words sell and cute together it means to act cute.

First of all, 萌 is actually an expression brought from Japanese. 萌 as a Kanji (Japanese Chinese character) is used as an Internet slang meaning cute. So 可爱 is the "authentic" (sort of?) Chinese word that means cute, but now 萌 has the similar meaning. The relationship between the two is like "cute" and "lovely" in English (...sort of?😂).

To say 萌 and some other Chinese adjectives twice is just a common usage/custom to make it more spoken. It sometimes also means the degree of the adjective is not so strong, similar to the usage of "pretty" or "sort of". Examples are 河里的水凉凉的 ( Water in this river is pretty cold.)

Finally, I don't really know why they put 卖 and 萌 together to be a phrase. I guess it's just fun to say people "selling cuteness"😂😅. It's like people upload cute selfies too deliberately so that you want to say they are "selling cuteness" or showing off.

For example, you take a selfie with facial expressions to make yourself appear cute. People would comment your selfie "卖萌".

卖萌可耻

mài méng kě chǐ

This phrase is used to scoff people who act cute, and it has both positive meaning and negative meaning. "可耻" means disgraceful.

You can use it when you really think those people who 卖萌 is disgraceful. Or this is a way for bantering.

For example, you can comment below that selfie with "卖萌可耻" when he/she is your good friend.

Imagine when it was extremely hot out there, you felt like the sun was burning like fire. Nowadays, though, we have acknowledged that the sun is somehow actually burning, hundreds of years before when the idiom was coined, people use the expression to describe how they interpreted the heat of sun.

“骄阳” means the blazing sun. “似” means “is like”, and “火” means fire.

酷暑盛夏

kù shǔ shèng xià

Say… you are a crazy fan of Taylor Swift, and you are going to her Red Concert no matter what, despite the withering heat of summer ( I don’t know you but I won’t do that lol). Here you can use this idiom to describe“the withering heat of summer”. “酷” and “盛” here both mean “ intense” and “ withering” to describe the extent of summer heat, and “暑” and “夏” both mean summer.

Personally, I think this idiom is very romantic.

Military training starts this summer!

If you are a freshman of middle school or high school or university in China, you have to take part in the military training!!!

Military training can be traced back to 1,000 years ago, when students had to learn how to shoot an arrow and how to drive a chariot. Nowadays, with the establishment of The People's Republic of China, military training for students are formally required before students get into middle school, high school, and university.

The goals of military training:

1. Independence

2. Learn how to arrange daily schedule in a scientific way because military training has really intense schedule.

3. Learn how to face difficulties.

4. Get familiar with the life in high school, mainly get used to the requirements of dorm life.

5. Have a sense of honor for the class as team

Before they leave the dorm each morning, students are required to clean the room, fold their quilt, put everything away from their desks, lock their closets, etc.

Training content:

1. Stand a pose of soldiers（Good standing posture)

2. Goose-step

3. Mark time

4. Jogging together

Students have to wear uncomfortable uniforms and shoes all the time, especially the shoes. There are no insole inside the shoes. For ten days(different schools have different length), students can only wear the same uniforms and same shoes. Students have to wash their clothes every day because of the sweat.

As the training is in the unit of classes, students as a class are required to do all the movements exactly the same, such as lifting arms in the same level, running in perfect square, etc. Doing the movements the same require intense training, and that's why trainers ask students as a group to do the movements again and again.

#Interesting life experience for Chinese students

广场舞 Square Dance in China

广场舞 Square Dance

With the urbanization of China, more and more people, especially old women would prefer to dance in squares in China. Recently there were even a group of women dancing on a square in New York, and got caught because of the loudness of music.

Here we would like to introduce something about square dance.

Combining various types of dance, square dance is a way of performance, where all people could take part in if they want to.

There are several types of square dance.

Pristine performances such as waist drums. This type of performance are mostly performed in festivals.

Improvisational performances that don't require uniform movements. Anyone could join int was long as there is music playing.

Here we would like to introduce another popular type, which is exercising square dance.

Most people attend this type of square dance are above forty years old. They join in square dance because this is a good opportunity for them to get more involved in their community, meet new friends, and keep fit.

People from an area come together and they practice the dance every night. There will be a guide in front of everyone teaching the movements of the dance, and then other people learn from her/him. This guide brings audio equipment to the square and play the songs.

Popular songs include “最炫名族风”(Most amazing national flavor) Gangnam Style, etc.

Chinese Traditional Sports-Ti jianzi

踢毽子 pinyin:tī jiàn zǐ

Ti jianzi

Ti jianzi, or Jianzi, is a traditional Chinese sport popular from Han Dynasty. There are both formal and informal ways to play this sport nowadays, but here we would like to present the informal ways to "ti jianzi", because they are more popular. Most primary school students love to ti jianzi during their P.E classes or during their causal time.

"踢" means kick, and here we can use any part of the body, mainly foot and legs, to kick the "jianzi". The normal way to "踢" is to lift your shank and use your feet to touch the "jianzi". As shown in the pictures in the next post.

"毽子" means little shuttlecock, and there are many types of jianzi using various materials. jianzi uses rubber circle as its base. Above the rubber circle are some metal coins to increase the weight. Then come various types of feathers, mainly from chicken and birds. Several types of jianzi will be shown in the next post.

The essence of ti jianzi is to keep the jianzi from touching the ground, but don't manage to use your hands.

There are two ways to play with the jianzi. One is for each person to do this activity. The main goal is to kick as many times as possible before it touches the ground. Whoever kicks the most time shall win the game. Most primary school students love to ti jianzi using this way during their P.E classes or during their causal time.

Another is to form a group of any size with only one jianzi. One member kicks to another person, and the other kicks back or to another member. People, especially students and people above thirty years old love to "tijianzi" as a way to keep fit and develop good relationship with neighbors and friends.
