Taking a lyrical and humorous approach on late-night drives, Celia Lowenthal brings us “Highway Homilies”, five verses that parallel the liminal spookiness of modern American highway rest stops to old European fairytales and lore.
Celia’s illustrative and sequential work are equally stunning, both demonstrating her indubitable grasp on narrative and composition. Just look at her illustrated telling of the Gisla Saga to see what we mean!
You can support Celia by getting a fabulous print of her many artworks on INPRNT, checking out her portfolio at celialowenthal.com , and following her @celialowenthal here on Tumblr and Instagram, and on Twitter as well!

Our first artist feature is on Megan Kelchner (@cocokat here on tumblr!). Megan’s tale follows the relationship of Sal and a ghost in the river of the nearby woods, as their warm feelings for each other grow through the changing seasons.
Megan’s sense of color, lighting and mood is so visually fantastic, and similarly subtle and romantic narratives shine through all of her illustration and comics work. Check out her portfolio at megankelchner.com , and support her work by also following her at @Megnutk on Twitter and Instagram!
Don’t forget to also check out the whole anthology, live now on Kickstarter!!

How did you get started in comics and illustration?
I started doing illustration as my major in college because I wanted to pursue art, and it seemed like the field within that which suited my interests best, and that also led to me looking at more comics. I did grow up reading manga and the like, but I didn’t really have any vested interest in making comics myself until I started reading more graphic novels and stand-alone comics a few years ago. I loved the meaningful, moving stories that people had to tell, and I wanted to do that too. I felt and still feel that comics are the perfect form of storytelling–it envelopes you in its own world for a long time as a written story, but its art can also instantly connect with someone from a glance.

How did you get started in comics and illustration?
I started making comics about two and a half years ago, which feels like much longer ago than it is. I sort of stumbled into it, actually. Despite reading comics my whole life, I never actively considered it something I could do as well – at least, not until my freshman year of college. My first comic (a six-pager that I ended up completing in a week) was a response on a whim to an assignment in my digital media introductory class, and I’ve been in love with making comics since then. Over the years, I’ve become much more serious about my comics practice and about what I want to get out of making comics. I think this is reflected well in my work for The Sun and The Wayward Wind; “Heritage” delves deeper into messy, repressed, anxious feelings than some other comics I’ve made, and it’s a direction I’m greatly interested in exploring more.
