Remember when TMA critical fans accused the podcast of "burying the gays"?

That's happening in Mal right now but with accusing the podcast of hating women and it's so funny to me-

"this woman that was introduced was used as a vehicle for the main characters' story! and the main characters are men!"

yes and every man that's introduced is also used as a vehicle for-

look yall i see the point I get where you're coming from but I think yall have said all there is to say and now instead of critically analyzing the reasons for some of these choices- and making a statement about podcasts as a whole- critiquing the whole genre that is lovecraftian horror fiction podcasts-

yall just keep repeating the same stuff over and over. Nothing interesting or new is being said. Yall touch the surface level and then go "see! see look!" but my answer is...okay? so what now? what do you want to come of this?

offer solutions. offer ideas. offer new and exciting and genuine ways for more women to be involved in a way that is satisfying and interesting. Hell? Literally, why not plan your own podcast together? We need more women written fiction podcasts and if Harlan can do all this as a one man band then surely these groups of people can write a woman driven story that touches all these topics that haven't been delved into!!!!!

I want something to COME of this!!!!!! DO something!!! Make something!!! Instead of circling around the same points and trying to get other people to say the same sentences and ideas- push those ideas and critiques into a narrative that genuinely says something about the state of horror fiction podcasts.

Ye, this is exactly why I didn't really enjoy this episode at all.

Leaving aside the fact that it's the 746485th old creepy woman used as a monster of the week, which is it's own whole problem (Lovecraft says hi), I had expected at least for her to have something interesting to put on the table.

But nope, she was mostly just a vehicle for John to voice back a recap of his entire emotional journey on the show so far and that's about it.

Then she dies in a somewhat funny way.

I don't talk a lot in here about my opinions on the canon events because I don't have a lot of good stuff to say, but man sometimes it's hard to ignore.

Many ppl have already said it in this thread, but there's a LOT of media where a single man narrates through characters of many genders without issue. Most audiobooks I've read narrated by men do this, many podcasts do this, too.

None of them involves crazy larynx gymnastics, just that the role is read and the narrator trusts the audience, that's all it takes.

Anyways, shout out to all the artists, writers, and craft creators of all kinds, your fics, your meta what ifs, your amazing ideas and visions are what inspire me.

Y'all make this journey worth it.

Absolutely anyone is allowed to have their opinions, so I’ll just throw mine in very quickly because it’s not a frustration I share, especially as a woman who is aware that there is a lack of women representation, but I feel the criticism is undue.

The thing is, not every story needs to have a bunch of women in it, and frankly I’m not interested in consuming a piece of media that feels obligated to reach a quota of spoken women roles. Because it’s always forced, never interesting to me as a woman, and I can genuinely sense when the writers are throwing a woman in to check that mark off their clipboard. But the women in Malevolent have been interesting and fleshed out. You learn bits and pieces of each of them, living their own lives, from as early as Episode One. Emily McFarland is a poor girl who was brutally murdered in Episode One, but then you learn that she worked with Anna Stanzick and was too difficult to manipulate by John, so he killed her out of frustration. Anna Stanzick worked with Amanda Cummings and successfully survived a ritual with Shib Niggurath, began investigating eldritch gods, and successfully evaded them for years, which is pretty baller. It’s only because of Arthur being tricked that both of them met a horrible fate. Or we could talk about Marie being a stellar, if terrifying, landlord who took matters into her own hands when her husband was possessed by a demon, or how she sees her son in Arthur and mourns his death. Or how Lilith is the daughter of Kayne, and she’s also Scratch, and I’m sure that’s due to be interesting. Or how Bella was her own person, a part of her that she never showed to Arthur: how she shared his fear of marriage, how she never loved him, and how it shows how wrong Arthur was about her.

And finally the hag, who is hatred and pain and trauma incarnate, a force who directly challenges John’s ideals, who needed to be there as she is the only one who could contain a god while also attacking the holes of John’s logic and identity, who was there as the final antagonist to make John choose if he should be whole or something new.

To say that these are boring or one dimensional characters,,, I guess I just don’t agree. And of course there is the matter of this being solely voiced by a cis man and how there’s only a believable range he can achieve without sacrificing quality or suspension of disbelief. I’m honestly not interested in seeing him being a female VA into a project that is solely voiced by him. He’s been capable of doing it on his own, and I’ve been really enjoying it.

Anyway, this isn’t to attack anyone, but it’s important that different perspectives are shared.

Tldr: I think the women in Malevolent are actually quite interesting and fleshed out, voiced or not, but of course they’ll relate constantly to the main characters because that’s what the audience cares about.

Magical Girl Moral Code

1) Family and Friends are important. They should come before all else.

2) A “Family” is a group of people that would never do you harm. Related or not. If a relative does you purposefully wrong (I.e. They care not for you) they are not family.

3) Even for those who do you wrong, Kindness is of upmost importance. That’s where your power lies. Not in strength or ability, but in the kindness you show others.

4) Trust is valuable. It’s your link between life and death. Do not trust so easily. And be sure to be trustworthy.

5) Love is also just as valuable. But this time you SHOULD love easily. Romantic, platonic, love for nature and love for physical objects. Love is how you respect. Love is how you make sure you are never powerless.

6) Hate is of no value. Do not wish harm on others, this will corrupt you. No matter what one has done you should never hate them. Do not trust them, but never lose what ounce of kindness should still be shown. There are no bad people in this world, just ones that did not follow this rule and have been corrupted.

7) Selfishness is hard to define. In some cases it is important. The selfish desire to live and continue for example. Other times it is not needed and can only harm you. Such as putting your life forward and harming others in your way.

8) Emotions are you. Every emotion you have is a part of you. Do not be ashamed of emotions you may feel. Own up to the good ones and work positively though the bad.

9) Good and bad are always together. You will fight the bad that used to be good and you will try to be good despite the bad.

10) This also goes for you. You will always have a good side and a bad side. This is natural, and you must combine them together in order to live. Focusing too much on the good can leave you lifeless, focusing too much on the bad can leave others in the path of your self destruction.

11) Heroic deeds may never be rewarded. Never be seen. Never even be heard of. Before you focus on wanting to be known, remind yourself of the ones that were in your life that will never be recognized for their accomplishments, yet did them anyway. Be a hero for others and yourself because you know it’s the right thing to do.

12) Live. Every moment should be lived. Between every battle you should live. during every battle you should live. Both literally and figuratively.

13) You’re fucking cute. 

14) Regret is how you lose all hope. Yet we will all regret our mistakes at some point. Don’t go at it alone. Some where there is someone to talk to. You just have to look. Learn to regret when needed, and also to never keep regret bottled up.

15) You will forget these things. You will mess up. You will hate at some point. You will focus on the bad. You will do something wrong. You will mess up. You will recover. And you will fight for what’s right once more.
