Inside everyone of us, no matter how old we are, whether we are an independent woman or a virile man lies a little girl or a little boy who yearns for safety, love and recognition. As children we develop this idea that we ‘must do it right’ (whatever we are programmed to believe ‘right’ is) because if we do our parents would be proud and love us. However, if for whatever reason we do not have that opportunity we are then left with a sense of not being good enough, that there is something wrong with me or some inner sense of failure. This is the voice, ‘the false belief’, we then find ourselves hearing within us our entire adult life. This is how we learn to reject ourselves to various degrees. As a result, many of us will seek for our missing sense of recognition, safety or love through others. These relationships either end up reinforcing our ‘false beliefs’ or changing them to various degrees. However, we can then fall prey to becoming dependent on that relationship as opposed to really getting to know our own true self. Learning how to rekindle your relationship with your inner child is essential to becoming a ‘whole’ emotionally mature and independent human being. In the same way that an inner child resides in each one of us, there also lies a natural adult ‘parent’ self. He or She is the one that knows how to guide and provide all that your inner child needs in order to be fulfilled. Unless your natural adult ‘parent’ Self and child Self within you become acquainted, you will continuously struggle with a poor sense of self worth and find yourself reacting to situations whether through anxiety, anger outbursts, phobias, depression, co-dependencies etc. no matter what your social persona or title may be. With the right therapy, inner growth and sound change is within reach.
