”Warn your warmth to turn away / Here it’s December, every day”. These haunting lyrics from the second single (“Love Like Winter”) from the seventh studio album from AFI still resonate to this day. DECEMBERUNDERGROUND was released in the early summer of 2006 and came off of the band’s mainstream breakthrough success of Sing The Sorrow. The LP found the band once again working with producer Jerry Finn and solidified AFI as a marquee act in the rock scene. DECEMBERUNDERGROUND features more of an EDM, gothic rock, and synthwave type of sound to it throughout, with heavy electronic elements found in several instances on the album. AFI invited listeners into the world of their new album with lead single, “Miss Murder”, that featured a stomping bass line, heavy guitars, and a great vocal performance from Davey Havok to set the song apart from what was on the radio at that time. What stood out to me the most on DECEMBERUNDERGROUND was AFI’s ability to continue to reinvent themselves while still staying true to the sound that The Despair Faction faithful would approve of. A bit of a bold choice to release a winter-themed record in the heart of summer, AFI proved that they didn’t need to conform to industry norms in order to make an impact that connected with audiences far and wide. Being no strangers to introductory songs throughout their career, “Prelude 12/21” helped with setting the stage for the world that they were inviting fans into with the opening lyrics of, “This is what I brought you this you can keep / This is what I brought you may forget me / I promise to depart just promise one thing / Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep.” The track was also used in the long version music video of “Miss Murder” to assist with launching into the heavy, goth rock found on the lead single. “Kill Caustic” is an aggressive punk rock song that would’ve also worked on Sing the Sorrow, or even The Art of Drowning, as it stands apart from the stylistic choices made on DECEMBERUNDERGROUND. By the time “Miss Murder” comes on, it demands immediate attention with it’s great beat, energetic performances from the four band members, and some cool atmospheric elements added into the mix to make for a radio ready single. As the track unfolds in the bridge, Davey Havok effortlessly goes from a soft croon to a visceral growl in the back half of the bridge to bring some hardcore context to the song. ”Summer Shudder” seemed like a logical second single from the set, but it never made its way to the radio airwaves. It features the memorable refrain of, “Under the summer rain / I burned away” and has remained a staple in the band’s live sets for quite some time. It’s now considered one of the band’s best “deep cuts” and it still rocks with a profound urgency to this day. “The Interview”, on the other hand, is a somber song that is largely built around the opening guitar riff from Jade Puget before Davey sings his complex poetry over the bass line from Hunter Burgan. In the closing stages of the song, Davey Havok explains the album title in the context of, “Calm down, come down / Cold resides with me / I’ll flee to Decemberunderground / As you exhale, I breathe in (and sink into) / The water, underground / And I’ll grow pale without you.” It adds in just the right amount of mystery and allure to it over the organs being played in the background to make for a memorable moment on the record. ”Love Like Winter” was the official second single from the LP and the music video featured the snowy, ice-laden environment that AFI were going for in the aesthetics for this album. The song is a great mix of industrial synths, programmed beats, and would allude to some of the stylistic choices made on Jade and Davey’s future project, called Blaqk Audio, that would make its debut shortly after the promotional period of this record. One of the other songs found on DECEMBERUNDERGROUND called “37mm” was originally going to be saved for the Blaqk Audio project, but the band felt it had a place within AFI.… https://chorus.fm/reviews/afi-decemberunderground-2/

Weezer have released the new single “We Might as Well Be Strangers.” The song comes from their new, gold, self-titled, album due out on August 21st. Today, Weezer are thrilled to announce their newest project, Weezer, out August 21, 2026 via Reprise/Warner Records. The project’s lead single, “We Might As Well Be Strangers” featuring Wednesday, is out now, weaving vocals from Rivers Cuomo and Wednesday’s Karly Hartzman. After sharing Blue, Green, Red, White, Teal, and Black albums, Weezer returns with a new color in their arsenal for Weezer—their 20th album over their monumental, decades-long run. Following an incredible, sold-out 30th anniversary tour that saw the band play their iconic debut album in full, Weezer reconvened in Orange County, a midway point between where they all live in California. There, they essentially went back to where they started: a rehearsal space, playing together, writing together, and figuring out what they wanted to do next and what shape that next project would take. Weezer was born out of those sessions—just four guys in a room, creating together. The result is a tightly wound, ready-to-spring record with songs written by three of the band’s four members, marking the first time frontman and guitarist Rivers Cuomo and drummer Pat Wilson had written the basics of a song together since the band’s debut album. When it came time to record, the band enlisted two producers whose approaches differed dramatically but aligned with Weezer’s vision: Klas Åhlund and Kenneth Blume (formerly known as Kenny Beats). Blume said he wanted to make “the most violent Weezer album ever.” While Åhlund took a more mathematical and stringent approach to recording, Blume pushed for a “rock band in a room” atmosphere—no grid, no click track, and no pitch correction. Drums were recorded with all four members playing live, listening to one another, and continuing to reshape the songs in real time. Weezer plays to the band’s enduring strengths and feels like an imagined greatest-hits collection made entirely of new material. It’s a direct, raw iteration of the group—an album that feels as urgent and vital as anything else in their catalog, even three decades into their career. The record features tongue-in-cheek, self-aware songs about aging as a band, weighing legacy, and continuing forward, alongside tracks celebrating where they are today: one of the most influential artists in the world for anyone picking up a guitar, bass, or pair of drumsticks. Earlier this year, the band announced their Weezer: The Gathering tour, a massive 32-date run across North America. They’ll be joined by The Shins and Silversun Pickups as support. To celebrate the announcement, Weezer hosted a week of fan-focused events in Los Angeles, including Weezerpedia trivia, a pickleball tournament, and more. While most fans of Daryl Palumbo’s power pop project, Head Automatica, point the band’s debut of Decadence as their best work, I am firmly in the camp that Popaganda is the better album. Heavily inspired by the infectious melodies of The Beatles and the upbeat nature of Elvis Costello, Popaganda came storming out of the gate with the bulletproof single of “Graduation Day” that ignited the limitless possibilities of the band. The record was produced by veteran hit-maker Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Saosin), and it has an undeniable sheen to its vibrant sound. The promotional cycle of the record got a bit derailed due to Palumbo’s struggles with Crohn’s disease and the inability to stay on the road as much as he and his bandmates may have wanted. However, giving a fresh listen to this record today is a warm and inviting experience that brought back a flood of positive memories for me during the summer of 2006. It was a CD that spent more time in my car’s player than it did on the shelf, and it stills sounds as urgent and refreshing to this day. It’s a bit hard to believe that this album was released with very little fanfare, as “Graduation Day” didn’t first hit the radio airwaves until two weeks after the LP release date. Had the album had more of a “push” from Warner Records, Popaganda could have really taken off. The lead single is infectious, and a little known fact about “Graduation Day” is that Gerard Way contributed some backing vocals in the mix. The single helps set the tone for the shimmering nature of the record, and it features some of the best vocal work of Palumbo’s career. ”Laughing At You” is a song that pokes fun of bands who don’t appear to be in on the joke, as the chorus admits, “You don’t got a clue / They’re laughing at you / Laughing, yes it’s true / You don’t even see / They’re laughing at you / Laughing at you to me,” that features some great keyboards from Jessie Nelson. “Lying Through Your Teeth” should’ve been a massive hit for Head Automatica as it checks all of the boxes for a power pop track that would’ve dominated the radio had it received more backing. It rocks similarly to bands like Neon Trees, and Palumbo shimmies and sways all over the track with another captivating vocal performance. ”Nowhere Fast” is dripping with heavy organs from Nelson, while Craig Bonich and Brandon Arnovick’s dual-guitar attack works really well here. Palumbo still remains the star, even as good as the instruments are in this track, and he delivers another great vocal showing. “Scandalous” is a mid-tempo ballad that leans even more heavily into the Elvis Costello influence, while “Curious” is pure bubblegum power pop similar to bands like American Hi-Fi and Ash. “God” rocks with a sense of urgency in the guitars, and is the main song that allows for the instruments to take more of a “center stage” approach than Palumbo’s vocals in the final mix. Fans of the style of Decadence may have appreciated deep cuts like the Glassjaw-esque “Shot in the Back [The Platypus]” and the 80’s dance floor synths found on “Egyptian Musk”, while the band leans even more into a bass heavy sound on the LP closer of “K Horse”. The back half of the record attempts to please both “types” of Head Automatica fans, and it ends up being a bit of a disjointed listening experience. However, with songs like “Million Dollar Decision” and “She’s Not It”, it’s easy to forgive the band for painting with broad strokes on Popaganda. “Cannibal Girl” has a bit of a 70’s jazz club feel to it and it makes for a cool way of closing out the final moments of the record. Add in a revamped Chris Lord-Alge-assisted mix of the Decadence hit of “Beating Heart Baby”, and you’ve got an album that still holds the test of time and showcases the ultimate “what could’ve been” if the band’s label had given Popaganda the push it deserved. --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/reviews/head-automatica-popaganda/
