There's a scene in Vendetta that I've been wanting to talk about because I just couldn't stop thinking about it. So here we go.
It's when Chris, Leon, and Patricio were ambushed by Arias's men, and Diego started unloading that humongous machine gun on them.
I couldn't help but notice Chris's reaction here.
I think we can agree that in that kind of situation, you wouldn't have the time to plan your action. You'd act based on your instinct/reflex.
Apparently, Chris's instinct/reflex was to grab the closest person there and try to get them to safety.
That person happened to be Patricio. It's worth noting that by that point, Chris had heard from Leon that Patricio wasn't exactly a good guy. According to Leon, Patricio was the one who betrayed him and made him lose his whole unit in the beginning of the movie.
Yet, despite knowing all that, Chris still tried to get him to duck for cover. He didn't discriminate who to save. For him, Patricio was just a civilian, another human being, and Chris just cared.
He got Patricio behind one of the pillars for cover, while he himself just crouched over him, putting himself in danger. He's willing to sacrifice his own safety for the sake of others' (This reminds me of how he threw himself to save his comrade from Iluzija in RE6).
And it doesn't end there. This is what happened next.
(Unfortunately, I had to make this particular gif in black and white because it’d exceed Tumblr gif size limit otherwise, but I hope it’s clear enough to see.)
After he got Patricio behind cover, the next thing he did was to make sure that the other person who happened to be there, Leon, was safe as well.
Look at that gif. Chris looked up to check if Leon was alright. Only after he confirmed that Leon was okay did he proceed to look at their attacker to assess the situation. It's always other people's safety first.
So, yeah. What I’m trying to show you is that Chris is such a selfless character who always just wants to save and help people. I don't think it's even because he wants to, it's just in his nature, his instinct. He's just a genuinely good person. And 'good' is definitely an understatement when talking about his character.
So, I said I was writing about how Chris's room in the RE Veronica announcement trailer gives us clues about him in that particular timeline, right? I decided to try out video format instead of just writing it down as essays.
I know it took a while, but I've finished Part 1 . As I wrote it down, it got longer than I initially planned (who am I kidding? I always have a lot to say when it comes to my man Chris), so I have to make it into parts.
For those of you who are interested, you can watch the full video here.
Chris's room in the RE Veronica announcement trailer gives us clues about him in that particular timeline.
I'm writing it down but it gets pretty long, I'm not sure a lot of you would want to read it. I've been away from Tumblr for so long, I don't know if people still enjoy reading long essays around here, in this day and age. Or like, read anything at all, for that matter.
I'm thinking of making it into a video so it'll be easier to digest with visuals and whatnot, but I'm not sure tbh. Maybe I'll try anyway.
So, the camera and ID lanyard may hint that Chris went undercover as a journalist to investigate Umbrella, right?
And there's also a black cap on the floor, which later was moved to the couch by the concierge lady.
Now, listen. I need to see Chris in that cap, with the camera and ID lanyard slung around his neck, sleuthing around Paris for anything he can get on Umbrella. Maybe even throw a pair of cute glasses on to perfect the handsome journalist look!
It's giving me Clark Kent vibes ngl.
Capcom probably won't give us that, but hey, a girl can dream, right?
I hereby formally request talented fanartists in the fandom to please do your magic. Thank you.
Hi, someone spoiled to me the Death Island movie and was saying things like, "Even the movies don't care about the redfields, haha."
Look, I like Jill and Leon like but if that spoiler was true and they the redfields got left behind or got trashed for the sake of the others to shine, please tell me
Hey there, always happy to see someone who also cares about the Redfields!
I'm not sure if you've watched the movie by now, so I'll try to answer this with minimum spoilers.
I said before that the dynamic that I was most excited to see in Death Island was the Redfields because we haven't seen them together on screen in canon material for 23 years since Code Veronica. So I think it's partly my own fault when I found that their dynamic in Death Island was somewhat below my expectation, because I was being a bit too excited about finally seeing them together again after so long.
The film makers managed to show us that Chris is such a caring big brother in this movie, but not to the extent that we saw in Code Veronica. And I definitely think that they could've improved on how Claire interact with her brother.
Overall, it's not good enough, but it's not overly bad either. But yeah, the Redfields (both individually and collectively as siblings) definitely take a back seat to Leon and Jill in this movie.
That's what I can tell you for now, but of course I plan to make a more comprehensive post about the Redfields in Death Island in a separate post later, too.
Hi i saw someone analysing leon and chris and said leon is introverted and chris is extroverted. His argument is bc leon works alone and chris works with a lot of ppl. I've been re fan for a long time and chris doesn't seem like an extrovert to me but idk how to explain lol. If anyone knows abt chris around here it's you so i want to know what you think.
Btw i'm glad you're back to posting! You're my favorite chris blog by far. I wish you post more often but I've following you for a long time so i know you've got a lot on your plate irl. So take your time i'm always excited to get notifications every time you post! :)
Um, I don't know how to put it nicely, but from what you told me there, I have to say that that is a very shallow analysis to me. That person seems to only take what they see at face value if what you say is anything to go by.
Well, people are free to have their own personal headcanons, but here's what I think based on what's canon.
First of all, Extroversion and Introversion is not defined by how many people you work with. It's way more complex than that. I am an introvert through and through, but I have plenty of associates that I work closely with. Being an introvert doesn't make you unable to work with many people. Likewise, extroverts don't always have to work with other people all the time.
Jobs are mandatory, so you can't use someone's job (and what they do in it or the people they do it with) to determine whether they're an introvert or extrovert. Studying what they do in their free time is a more accurate way, because one way to determine people's extroversion or introversion is by how they 're-charge'. But we know RE isn't too generous when it comes to showing us what the characters do in their free time.
However, we have this canon ending screen of Chris:
A quick google search will tell you that compared to extroverts, introverts seem to enjoy fishing more because it is typically more of a solitary and 'chill' kind of hobby.
So that's one hint to tell you that Chris is more of an introvert.
Another way to determine whether someone is an introvert or extrovert is by how they outwardly express their inner thoughts and how outward they react to various situations.
The way Leon quips and throws one-liners while reacting to stuff happening around him, the way he taunts his enemies, the way he casually flirts, the way he sarcastically calls Chris and Rebecca with nicknames in Vendetta, the way he complains aloud about wanting a vacation, and even the way he says that he loved the bike out loud in Death Island (instead of inwardly), etc.; it all screams extroversion to me.
And even though we see him working alone quite a few times, there are plenty of times we see him working with other people too. Infinite Darkness had him working in a team, Vendetta shows that he worked in a unit, and he also partnered up with Krauser and Helena at some point (though Helena's case seems to be 'accidental' in nature). Not to mention the people he works with behind the scene. So I think him working alone cannot be used as an argument in this case.
But anyways, let's talk about Chris now.
Unlike Leon, Chris doesn't quip when reacting to the things happening around him. He obviously doesn't taunt his enemies; quite the opposite, he has shown a few times that he's annoyed by overly talkative people.
(To Wesker) "I've had enough of your bullshit!"
(To Lucas) "If you're gonna kill me, just kill me, but for the love of God, shut the fuck up!"
He usually doesn't even bother to respond when an enemy taunts him. He chooses to stay silent when Dylan specifically taunts him in Death Island. It's worth noting that Claire, Jill, and Leon all give some sort of response to Dylan's individual taunt to them.
Also, Chris rarely expresses his opinion and views unless probed. For example, he talked about being a realist only after Sheva prompted him in RE5.
And Chris doesn't talk and complain about his pain and trauma. He acts on them. In Vendetta, he didn't talk about how miserable he was after losing Cathy and his squad. He kept it inside and used that grief to relentlessly pursue whoever's responsible for those deaths.
He only talks about his inner struggles after he has overcome them himself, usually to motivate and help others do the same, not to complain. Like when he talks about his past mental struggles to Jill in Death Island.
And yeah, Chris is surrounded by people who's dear to him, like Jill, Rebecca, Barry, and his sister Claire. But being an introvert doesn't mean that you don't have any friends. We just like to have a few dear friends, as opposed to many casual ones.
To me, Chris is definitely an introvert based on what's shown in canon.
(And thank you for your kind words! I wish I can post more often too, but sadly I can't. But I tried to answer this ask as soon as possible as a token of thanks for being so understanding! 💚)
There's a couple of anon Leon rants in my inbox, so I guess I'll answer them first. I'll just publish them in one post under the cut below.
Obligatory disclosure for Leon stans who happen to follow me: click here.
Wow, that's some rant there, Anon. Hmm.. Where to begin?
I censored the username because I don't want any drama with anyone, but I think I've seen that username in Chris's tag here in Tumblr, too. I can't comment too much about him though, so I'll just say this:
People coming from RE4make can get things.. 'incorrect', for lack of a better word. Not only that the remakes vary greatly from the OGs, RE has almost 30 years worth of lore and characterizations. The wiki is a good place to give you general idea, but there are nuances which you can only get from actually playing and replaying the games. Not even watching cutscenes on YouTube will give you the same insights you get from actually experiencing the games.
With the.. clout (as you put it) that he's got from.. say, serving the Leon thirsts with the release of RE4make, I'd imagine he'd get massive following from that ("Leon + thirst" is a sure formula to get you popularity in the fandom after all). So I can only hope that he won't use the platform to spread misinformation, because I know how bad misinformation can be. I was there when Village happened. New fans would gobble up any 'information' and treat it as truth, because it's easier to just 'trust' a blog with massive following than to make some effort to double-check.
With that out of the way, I'd like to address the other points in your rant.
Yeah, you're absolutely right. Leon's not the only one with trauma in RE. It should've been such an obvious well-known fact that it feels ridiculous to have to point it out. Literally every protagonist in RE has unspeakable trauma (I can spend all day talking about Chris's and the others' trauma, but let's save it for now). But their trauma is oftentimes overlooked by the fandom because they don't.. whine (as you put it) about it the way Leon does. And, I suspect, because they're not a pretty white boy with blond hair who's more appealing to paint as an adorable whump character in fanfictions and fanarts.
And I agree that comparing Jill's trauma to Leon's is kind of.. insensitive.
First of all, I always think that the whole 'blackmail' thing with Leon is way too romanticized in the fandom. For starters, you're right, Leon had great and amicable relationship with both President Graham and President Benford. I've talked about this whole 'blackmail' thing in the past, so I won't go over everything all over again. I'll just quote a bit from my previous post:
In comparison, Jill literally had no control over her own body and was forced to actually kill innocent people and infect them with uroboros. So yeah, I have to agree that no, Leon's 'trauma' is not comparable to Jill's. Death Island is supposed to deal with the topic of Jill's trauma, so it's sad when people turn it around and make it about Leon instead.
*takes the Samurai Edge and ammo, and then says somberly* "It'll take way more firepower than this to repel them, but I guess it'll have to do for now. Thanks."
(Anon.. 😅)
On a more serious note though, I've stopped tagging Leon on my posts since a couple years back precisely because I don't want any drama with them.
But listen, it needs to be pointed out, okay? All I did was pointing out some facts, though. Those are what literally happened in the movie, I didn't make anything up. And rest assured, I've got more which I hope I'll be able to post about soon.
They can't keep doing that and expect no one will notice. More people need to be aware of this obvious special treatment for Leon. Tbh I don't really care if they want to make Leon as cool as John Wick or something, but it's upsetting when they do that at the expense of the other characters.
I like what you said there, Anon. "The rich gets richer, while the poor gets poorer."
Leon got popular since the OG RE4 blew up, and since then, they keep on giving him more and more privilege, making him even more and more popular, while sweeping the other characters under the rug, making them less and less popular.
They make him the main character in quite literally everything he's in. Even in the ensemble game RE6, Leon is first, front, and center.
It's funny because the fandom loves to sing the "cHRis iS oVErUsEd!!!" song even when Chris only has cameo appearances in some titles like RE7 and RE8, but they turn a blind eye to Leon for some reason? These same people will definitely whine about the possible lack of Leon in RE9 even though we've been getting back to back Leon contents these past few years.
And seriously, whatever happened to making Death Island a Jill-centered movie?
Apparently their fingers slipped and accidentally made Leon the center character in the official comic as well.
I'll be tagging my Death Island posts with "Death Island Spoilers" for about a week or two after release to give you enough time to avoid spoilers if you haven't watched it already. If you still want to avoid spoilers from me after that, please filter "RE: Death Island" out, too.
for all the time people spend arguing about whether chris or leon should be in more things or if theyre in too many things i cant help but notice the girls are always left out of it. like dgmw i love my boys to bits but if anyone else deserves more screentime maybe it's claire or for goodness sakes JILL who has been so conspicuously absent in recent games despite how important she is to the franchise and to chris, who has been in those games written as though she doesnt exist. like where is she??
im really hoping she gets the treatment she deserves in death island 😔
I'm not sure if you've watched the movie by now, but sadly I have to say that no, Jill does not get the treatment she deserves in Death Island.
As I explained in my previous post, even though Jill was marketed as having a central role in this movie (with her being front and center in promotional materials, etc.), a certain other character managed to steal her thunder instead, so to speak.
