Dbluedazzled LookBook

I recently got to work with my friend Destiney Bleu, the creator of Dbluedazzled, a high end custom dazzled clothing line. We shot her latest look book of Sportswear inspired dazzle, for use in the Japanese market. We decided to stick with the same look we used for her previous look book i shot to maintain continuity.

  Destiney’s designs have been seen everywhere from stages in Las Vegas, Fox’s hit show Empire, and on superstar singer Beyonce.

How I got started in photography

One of the most frequently asked questions I recieve is, ” how did you get started. It’s a long complex story but here is the synopsis: I got started in photography in high school. I used the computer teachers Sony Mavica, which used 2.5 inch floppy discs, to take random pictures around the school as a way to skip class. After graduating I didn’t pick up a camera again until I stole my brothers Olympus om 1 that my dad bought him for his high school class. I used it to take random pictures at family events from weddings to funerals. People really liked them so I was like hmmm maybe. I read up on my favorite photographer, Gordon Parks and realized he was from Kansas so that made me feel like maybe. But I set that aside to keep working my very shitty job at att wireless and continue college. I decided to try design because I had always wanted to be an artist but I hated my drawings and paintings while designing I learned that most people who needed design work had super shitty photos. So I plotted on taking photos. Then my cousin who was a producer for a local entertainment company hit me up like we need a cover for Reno’s new album. That was my shot. I shot my first cover. It was fairly terrible but it got me back into photography. I decided to go work at Best Buy so I could get a discount on a camera. I worked there long enough to buy my camera then I met a studio photographer that needed a digital tech and I quit to work for him. He gave me my first lights some photogenics from the 70s that blew up when I first tried them. So then he gave me my second light a novatron with one head. I used that to build a portfolio and learn lighting and from there I was committed .

Swimming in Ciroc with Nicole Issacs

In California, summer lasts just a little longer than anywhere else and i took advantage this year by squeezing in an early fall swimwear shoot with my favorite travel and food blogger Nicole Isaacs formerly missjetsetter.com. We met on a shoot for Naked Wardrobe and after her wanderlust trip to 4 countries in one month she contacted me about doing a quick shoot while she was in Los Angeles and I couldn’t say no.

  The first look we did was a look from Naked Wardrobe that we shot in Hidden Hills neighborhood of Calabasas, California.

After about an hour shooting various fall looks in the blazing heat we decided it was time to relocate to pool side for some swimwear instead.    While getting set up for the shots at the pool she told me she also works with Ciroc and broke out a huge bottle of Ciroc Coconut, which we couldn’t enjoy because we we were both in the middle of spiritual fasting.

We ended up getting in several looks including one from my friend, designer and actress Draya Michelle‘s swimwear company Mint Swim.

Mint Swim Fall Editorial - Draya and Brianna Shanee

      To end summer and prepare for resort season, Draya and I decided to do a quick editorial shoot for Mint Swim. We chose to go with a very exotic deserted oasis vibe. These shots were taken in Malibu at an abandoned motel, the lush scenery attracted my eye when I was leaving Destiney Bleu’s birthday beach party. It stuck out so much that I sent Draya a shoot idea she sent me back a few inspiration photos she liked and I went back with Camilla to scout it out. During this shoot we had my friend Felicia LaTour, who also runs an awesome mommy blog, do make up. Draya had custom wigs created for her and Briana, who is also a young business owner her shop Matte is designed and sourced by her, the wigs were created byher hair stylist  .  The shots have appeared on numerous blogs including globalgrind.com and bet.com.

Required reading - The Tanning Of America by Steve Stoute

I’ve decidedto start sharing some of the most transformative books that I have read or listened to in hopes that one or more people will enjoy them as well. The first book I want to recommend is Steve Stoute’s The Tanning of America. This book was recommended to me by the founder of the Marcus graham project, Lincoln Steffens after he learned about my background in marketing and my desire to expand my presence in the field.  The book chronicles Steve Stoute’s view on how hip hop culture has made this generation more connected and has changed how marketers should communicate. He speaks about the “tanned” mindset as the hip hop influenced culture and values present for the vast majority of consumers. The main point of the book is illustrating how pyschographics of the general population have become more melded due to urban music and culture having a massive influence since the 80s.

Steve’s personal story was particularly interesting to me because he rose from a road manager for kid and play to manager for track masters to a position at def jam then to the head of def jam. Then he quit and started a advertising agency. He leveraged his understanding of culture, especially hip hop music, to gain Fortune 500 clients and establish Translation as a major player in marketing and advertising. His partnership with hip hop icon Jay-z, RocNation is one of the power players in music and sports management.

The book has since sparked a TV docuseries and is highly recommended to anyone who works in music, marketing, advertising, or that is interested in starting a business.

Fall Editorial Shoot- Naked Wardrobe

Last week was my shoot with Naked Wardrobe for their fall editorial.Createlavida (Director of Operations and Marketing) and I headed downtown to Apex Studios on one of the hottest days yet and began setting up. Naked Wardrobe is a contemporary women’s boutique, their “simply sultry” style has grown a wide following including Khloe Kardashian. This fall they’ve added some great chic pieces to their collection. Perfect for layering: warm but still light enough for LA’s fall season.

Draya Michelle Fall Editorial

Recently I worked with Draya Michelle, designer of Mint Swim to create some new public relations images. We shot a few headshots for her acting, which is taking off. We also shot some images that were requested specifically for People Magazines style section.

My Cousin Chase Deville was in town so I had him come to the shoot to assist me. Most of the images were shot with wonderful natural light that was available in her and Orlando Scandrick’s house in the hills, all other lighting was crafted with Profoto lighting. I had a great time working with the team to create some great fall looks and a few timeless looks for Mint Swim.

Tasting Leona...

Before the Grand Opening of Venice’s Hot new Restaurant Leona my friend Miriha took me to one of their three tasting events.

We got to taste a variety of delicious items from their Brunch menu.

    We also go to sample some stunning sweets.

    I definitely suggest visiting next time you are taking a beach day in Southern California.

Wanna Cookie?

Today was a productive day at one of my favorite work spots: Milk Jar Cookies. Hands down the best cookies in LA. Some where in between a cookie and a muffin, these tall cookies are crisp on the edges, but chewy and fluffy in the center. My new found favorite is the gluten free lemon cookie with Fosselman’s lemon custard ice cream (you can create your own ice cream cookie sandwich.) 

Create.lavida tried their mocha: Sightglass coffee paired with fresh Brogeuieres chocolate milk. Cookies and ice cream, perfect fuel for all the new content coming up for the holiday season, stay tuned!

Yesterday @sodraya asked me to be part of her #tressesbydraya make over give away. 3 women got complete make overs including hair make up and clothes. It was crazy to see how much more confident they were at the end of the day. This picture isn't from yesterday its just a picture of Draya sitting on a couch looking fine, that I used to illustrate this story.
