Where We Stayed: A Paw-Perfect Coastal Stay with Meredith Lodging

I’ve stayed in plenty of “pet-friendly” places that amounted to little more than a carpeted unit with a “no accidents please” sign. But Meredith Lodging surprised me.

When I booked Cabin on the Coast, a four-bedroom pet-friendly home in Manzanita, I knew it was close to the beach, but I didn’t realize how close it was to everything else: pine-scented forest trails, dog-welcoming cafés on Laneda Avenue, and a sandy shoreline that seems to go on forever. Within an hour of arrival, Luna (my Aussie mix) had claimed the giant deck as her lookout post, the kids had discovered the upstairs bunk room, and I had mentally extended our stay. Turns out, this quiet corner of the Oregon Coast, where you can walk from a golf course to the Pacific in five minutes, isn’t just scenic, it’s made for dog lovers. And this trip? It turned out to be one of our best.

Our rental near Manzanita came with a fenced yard, outdoor hose station, a mudroom with tile floors, and this made Luna instantly loyal, a welcome basket that included locally baked dog biscuits. It was clear their team actually hikes and lives with dogs here, because everything, from leash hooks by the door to the washer/dryer ready for post-adventure cleanup, just made sense.

When we reached out last-minute about nearby vet services after a beachgoer’s dog had a small limp, their local team had three numbers ready in under 10 minutes.

This wasn’t just a place to crash, it was a true home base built with dogs in mind.

North Coast (Astoria → Tillamook)

1. Fort Stevens Jetty Trail (Astoria) Historic bunkers, freshwater lakes, and open beach all in one go. Our 6-mile morning hike turned into an impromptu swim + tug session in the dunes.

2. Clatsop Loop – Ecola State Park (Cannon Beach) Elk sightings, moss-draped forest, and a jaw-dropping headland view of Haystack Rock. Keep leashes close, you don’t want your dog chasing wildlife.

3. Cape Falcon Trail (Manzanita) This one’s lush, slightly muddy, and rewards you with a sweeping cliff-top view that makes for great pup portraits.

4. Neahkahnie Mountain South Approach (Nehalem) Not for tiny legs, this trail climbs 900 feet. Luna slept like a rock after this one.

Central Coast (Lincoln City → Florence)

1. Drift Creek Falls (Lincoln City) Waterfall finale + swaying suspension bridge = adrenaline for humans, caution for pups. Bring a backup towel, there will be splashing.

2. Devils Punchbowl to Otter Crest Loop (Otter Rock) Rugged beauty with tide pools, hidden sea caves, and dog-friendly patios nearby.

3. Cape Perpetua Scenic Trails (Yachats) Giant 600-year-old spruce trees and dramatic blowholes like Thor’s Well. Dogs love the smells. You’ll love the scenery.

4. Hobbit Trail to Heceta Head (Florence) Magical and short, like walking through a fairytale. Ends with a view of Oregon’s most photogenic lighthouse.

South Coast (Coos Bay → Brookings)

1. Shore Acres to Simpson Beach (Coos Bay) Cliff-top drama and crashing waves? Yes. Also: formal gardens that allow dogs on leash. Luna sniffed every single rose bush.

2. Bandon Beach Labyrinth Loop (Bandon) Labyrinth artists use driftwood and sand to create walkable art. Be gentle, especially with curious paws.

3. Secret Beach Trail (Brookings) Short but unforgettable. Misty forest + cliff stairs + hidden cove. Bring a harness and plan for tide-timing.

4. Cape Blanco Rim Trail (Port Orford) Windy, wild, and full of elk herds. Stunning lighthouse views and nearly empty trails, even in summer.
