It’s just funny how…

It’s just funny how people flipped out about the MH Isi Dawndancer doll and how she was “cultural appropriation” but say nothing bad about Skelita, Jinafire, Kiyomi, or Lorna. They are all inspired by different people and cultures but only one triggered people? What about the MH minis Halloween Lagoona? She’s dressed as a mummy. Is that not monster cultural appropriation? No one hated the Monster Exchange Draculaura and her kimono-esq outfit, but couldn’t her clothes be considered appropriation too? I love it when we get more monsters of different cultures, I just hate it when Tumblr selectively hates them because they’re “appropriated”.

(Personally I have no problems with any of the dolls stat d above. I love MH but sometimes people get selectively triggered and I just don’t get it.)

People did take issues with the other characters though. I’ve seen posts about them, but you have to realize that Jinafire and Skelita were introduced in late 2012, so most discussions about them are from 5 years ago. The controversy about Isi probably just stands out to you because she was introduced much more recently.

As for Monster Exchange Draculaura, I’d say the reason the fandom doesn’t really consider her cultural appropriation is because she was visiting Japan through an exchange program, where the point is to learn about and partake in the culture of another country. That said, tt’s still a kimono-inspired outfit designed by someone who isn’t japanese, so there’s an issue with that, but the context of it is why people probably don’t talk about it. If she were just going to a party and was wearing a kimono-style dress, then yeah, that’d be really bad.

Also yeah, these are “just children’s toys” and there’s bigger issues to be upset about, but people are capable of being upset over multiple things at once? And It’s great that we got to see characters of other cultures and that “efforts were made” with them, but that doesn’t mean they’re barred from being critiqued. In order to achieve good representation, you have to be critical of things, even if they’ve “made efforts”, because they’re still flawed. You’ll never see good representation if you just give things a pass because “they tried”.

Most people mad about Skelita were white parents crying that she promoted anorexia, as far as I can remember. She was the only doll the Mexican side of my family liked (leading to some of the only conversations I’ve ever had with my younger Mexican cousins when I wore a costume of her), and my Latina friends and I gushed over her, even the ones who didn’t like dolls. She wasn’t like Isi, a gross muddling of a bunch of stereotypes, she was clearly Mexican and seemed respectfully and happily so. The only time I heard another Mexican (part or full) complain about Skelita was jokingly whining that her name was dumb.

The difference between appropriation and appreciation is respect and knowledge. Respect and knowledge were shown in Skelita. Every element of her design was a recognized part of Mexican culture, her diary showed a family and a love for them that was comforting and familiar to Mexican fans. I cannot speak to Jinafire myself the same way I can about Skelita, so I’m not even going to try.

Isi Dawndancer’s name alone shows that there was no respect or knowledge of Native culture when she was being made. And she only gets worse from there. You can say she’s got a cute design and whatever you want, but she has no heritage. She has no specific tribe/nation, no real culture, she’s a gross blend of generic stereotypes and misunderstandings.

Ravens imitate a number of sounds, and they can be extremely accurate. Their voices are able to mimic the deep, resonant tone of a man, or the higher-pitched tone of a woman. They often sound so insanely human that it’s hard to believe what you’re hearing.

Raymond is a wild bird that comes to visit his friend Merlyn and likes to make weird noises, but … wait. Was that..? At the 3min mark, was he imitating Merlyn’s laugh?

Generally this type of speech only happens with ravens that are trained and raised and captivity. But there are other wild ravens like Raymond who are freaking people out on a daily basis.
