Excellus isn't the first trans character that was made CIS in the localization, they did similar in Radiant Dawn. Excellus is the tactician of Walhart in the Valm arc who forced Yen'fay to fight, she's depicted as a slimy evil character hated by all, unlike all the cis women bosses whom are misled by a man & receive sympathy from the protagonists.

The difference between the treatment of Excellus and cis women bosses is espically damning of the transphobia within FE: Awakening.

It cannot be excused as Excellus being an antagonistic character either, just like you said, cisgender female villians recieved different, better treatment from the storywriters. It's honestly unfortunate that a character like Excellus was handled this way, and as a trans person myself, I feel like this situation takes on a more personal tone.

Although the exclusion of the blatant transphobia in the English release is a good move, it was at the expense of actually having a transgender character in the localized version. It would've been nice to keep Excellus a trans woman, espically when Fire Emblem is certainly lacking in canon LGBTQ+ representation. But, the fandom most definitely works overtime to cover that ground.

The site lgbtqgamearchive explains a bit, but basically one of the villains in the Japanese version, Excellus, is a hodgepodge of negative LGBTQ stereotypes, is referred to with rude terms and presented as acceptable to hate “because she’s a he.” The English version made the character a Cis gendered eunuch, though there are still some not very PC comments.

I didn't know that Excellus was handled this way overseas.

I'm going to be honest here, I don't recall much of the character within the English ver., so I don't believe I can commentate with anything worthwhile. But that line of "she's a he" being used as reason to justify the mistreatment of Excellus gets under my skin. I'm just wondering what the translator team's thought process was when deciding to make Excellus a cis eunuch, or if they had any other plans for handling this character?

I'll be sure to read more into this, I recall seeing a few forums addressing this exact issue and I want to see what other people think about this. Thank you for informing me about this, anon!
