  Maybe he was staring. Max Caulfield was either totally weird or an attention whore. What the hell was with those lights? He assumed she was one of the few students staying at Blackwell over the break. He was. Nothing made him as the idea of going home. 

  Her small wave results in him moving closer to her. He confused look still frozen on his face, he looks her up and down. She looks fucking cold and like she’s about to drop the lights. He really should help her, but he wasn’t that sort of person. Then again, it was almost the new year. Maybe it was time to do himself a favor and change. 

“Do you want something Max? You look like your having some problems.” It does sound pretty mocking, doesn’t it?

She’s been through colder weather, but she’s not usually out in it, and it wasn’t exactly a quick trip; still, at least she found them. How sad would it be to stay for the holidays and not have decorations up? And they might, maybe, be perfect for pictures.

So she hesitates a moment when he asks. Help would be nice, but... she shakes her head. “I think I’ve got it.” She’s not sure he’s exactly offering, anyway. “Just... saying ‘hi.’ -- you’re staying?”

  Nathan wasn’t even certain she was talking to him at first. Once it became obvious, he wasn’t sure what to think. Was she fucking with him?Max did have skills, but she hardly seemed the type to walk right up to someone (and him of all people!) and compliment them. 

“Uh… Are you talking to me? Seriously?”

     “Yyyeah...?”

Shit, maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Still, might as well finish the thought before bailing. Max gives a little shrug.

     “Yeah. You’ve got a distinctive style.”

Chloe watches Max carefully–almost in a trance at how familiar it is–well, sorta. But she crosses it out of her mind, for now. Instead, she takes in a deep breath and exhales. The air between them was uneven. And it was driving her insane. It made her feel uncomfortable–even if they’re at her safe haven. She’s itching for some sort of breaker. An ice breaker. Anything.

         ❝—So,❞ She says, ❝Whatcha think of the place? Pretty hella amazing, right?❞

Her eyes squint a little as she smiles. There’s a jibe about tetanus shots on her tongue before she pauses, hit with the abrupt worry that maybe it won’t come off as too lame to be an attempt at teasing. Her smile sticks for a second, then eases back. It’s still Chloe, after all.

     “It’s awesome, Chloe.” She runs a hand through her hair, self-conscious. “How’d you find it?”
