· This event was a Rhetoric and Writing Studies student showcase for students who volunteered to enter their end of semester projects. These different projects consisted of different types of project categories. Some of few being posters, websites, 3D projects, and brochures. Each project category could be voted on which was the best project. Not only were there different categories, but there were different topics in themselves. These different topics ranged from STEM, to how car emissions effect the air we as humans breathe.
So What
· I learned many things in attending this showcase. One thing I learned, was that if I ever want to enter a showcase, I know that I have to be very well organized. I think that getting to know these students through their research and through their work. One more thing that I would consider to liven this event would be to actually talk to the individuals who created these projects.
Now What
· Something that I can take away from this event is that I can and will use these projects as references as to how organized I will need to be in the future. This will not only help me form papers in my future RWS course, but for any other course that I have to write lengthy paper. Overall, I believe that throughout this showcase the main thing that I got out of it was how to create research on my major (kinesiology) either with diversity or any different types of genres within my major.
So this is the very last Tumblr post we are required to complete for Professor Audrey’s RWS 1302 class and I gotta admit I feel soooo relieved!
But there is still one more very important major assignment to turn in before I am completely free, my website..
So how will I execute Ethos, Pathos, and Logos as a producer, creator, writer, and activist on my website?
SECTION A: As a Writer..
1. How will you employ?
ETHOS: My homepage with my name and title will serve for the credibility that the website is mine and that I am the author. It will be credible since I will be including that I attend the University of Texas at El Paso and that I am taking the RWS 1302 course with Professor Audrey. Another way to be credible is of course providing an image of myself and examples of my assignments and experiences throughout the course.
PATHOS: Oh! This rhetorical appeal will be easy to apply since there were many emotions going on inside me during the whole semester! In the “Assignment Reflections” section, I will be able to express what my emotions were during each of the assignments and their completion. Also, in the “Course Reading Reflection” section, I will provide some feedback about my thoughts about the different readings required for each assignment in the semester.
LOGOS: Logic will be provided through the Fair Use Statement and any charts, graphs, tables, etc. I decide to utilize through the different tabs of my website. Also, through my writing fluency in my whole website that will definitely deliver logic. And simply through the information that I provide in each section and tab created in the homepage.
SECTION B: As a Designer..
2. How will you employ?
ETHOS: I will employ ethos through appropriate alignment and grouping of my text and images included in my website. I will have to take a big consideration in which way I want to execute my information to readers, either horizontally or vertically and not too much information either. Also, the information should not be too cluttered or too separated, but should be separated into small paragraphs pertaining specifically to each of the required sections. Simply using professional grammar and using reliable information for each source will employ ethos successfully.
PATHOS: I will employ pathos (feelings and emotions) through consistency, contrast, and balance. I will keep a balance by having the same text on all of my website’s information except for the fact that my title and sub-titles will be a little bit bigger than the rest of the text but keeping the same font throughout. Images I provide will absolutely portray strong feelings, so I will consider which images to provide depending on what my information is about. The background will be a light not eye-catching color, which will not cause any distraction from the rest of the information I provide.
LOGOS: I will employ logos through the whole content in my website. The organization and different sections provided in my home page will be a big thing. I look forward to making it very self explanatory and easy for viewers to navigate on it. Simply by providing facts, statistics, and quotes, there will be a sense of logic transmitted into whoever wishes to navigate through my website.
So now that I am done analyzing various ways in which to apply each of the three rhetorical appeals into my website as a writer and as a designer, I feel even more relieved and happy since I just took one more step into the process of my website!
I think that your website will form nicely seeing as to how organized you explained it to be in section A, with the “Course Reflection” and how you’ll provide feedback. I also want to thank you for reminding me about on very important detail, my name at the homepage of the website! overall I thought that your outline for your website gives a great idea of what’s to come.
I am happy to say that the final Tumblr assignment of the semester has arrived!
Section A:
Ethos
> As a writer, I will ensure that ethos is incorporated to my website. I will do this to assure that the audience can have someone to relate to and to just keep it nice and simple. I will go into detail and make sure that I do not go in too much depth so that I don’t lose the audiences interest. I will also have it checked for any type of grammar errors.
Pathos
> I will be sure to keep the audience interested simply so that they can feel like they’re getting to know me, my major, and what I classify as. Making sure that they at the very least glance at the assignments is key.
Logos
> I really want to make sure that all of the text and background images looks very professionally done and well organized. I will also use the book as reference so that I know that everything is correctly placed and in order.
Section B:
Ethos
> With the design of my website, I will make sure that the information that will be put into to it will be liable. I will also make sure that it fits the overall design of the page.
Pathos
> I will use pathos in the design by using backgrounds that will keep the viewers attention. Any colors that are used will be in accordance with the guidelines. I will make sure that there is nothing that may give my website an unbalanced look or feel.
Logos
> I will use logos to ensure that my website is simple, yet keep it looking as neat and as organized as possible. I do not want the audience to have any problems with going through my website, I want it to be smooth and easy to search through.
We would take a look on some examples of websites an critique them based on various categories. I will also talk about some ideas that I want for my website.
SECTION A:
QUESTIONS FOR ANALYSIS: http://trendlines.ca/
1. In the “trendlines” website, the balance of this site is completely terrible; the author of this site did not even attempt to display the text accordingly to match and compliment the main page. Everything looks like one big block of text behind a background that has way too many colors just enough to give someone a headache.
2. The contrast that is used in this website, is completely outdated. The text resembles to the text from windows 97, and to say the least this text is over all over the place. Some of the text is in different color which does not match at all with the background, the text is even different font sizes for each section of the main page.
3. This website does not apparently have good consistency since some of the text is different sizes in each section of the home page.
4. I can use the alignment and grouping to make this website cleaner and easily understandable. If this website featured more interactive options to navigate the site, it could turn out to be more user friendly.
5. This site lacks effectiveness and could use more work into making the website appealing to the audience. If this website can have all these principles improved, the site could use more tweaks to transform from an outdated website to a modern and improved technological website.
QUESTIONS FOR ANALYSIS: http://www.aaronxmarquez.com/
1. For the website “Aaron Marquez” this website is properly laid out with many interactive and user friendly. The author of this website has used techniques that can be appealing to the audience such as the alteration of brightness and darkness, the transitions to the different sections of the webpage are very well animated.
2. The contrast that is used in this website, is modern and vibrant. The images and animations complement the main page to the extent that the audience can reflect their attention to this website.
3. The website uses good consistency, the text is mostly thin, and however this works by integrating the text into the background where the transitions can freely animate the text.
4. I could use minimal tweaks and adjustments to clean up this website by adding more redirections to specific portals. Some of the animations and transitions can be too much to handle in the internet, therefore not making this website as user-friendly as it should be
5. This site has much effectiveness for its own theme, it does not need much as to only having a specific theme available to the audience. I think that this website does a good job in making this sort of mechanism more appealing to the audience.
SECTION B:
1. I will have to ensure that my website is user friendly, I would want to add some animations between sections of the website. Another good idea is to make the images used in my website more interactive, I would want to achieve as much balance towards my website by synthesizing the text corresponding to the specific features that serve different functions.
2. I will make sure that I can keep an efficient contrast by manipulating the text and be precise to how I actually use the text and what I use it for. I could match the text accordingly to its theme and I can format the text to fit the background and design elements.
3. I could be able to use good consistency by preventing the over- usage of animations or transitions that might cause issues while navigating the website. The text that I will most certainly use will be one type of text that remains the same in every section of the webpage, but will either italicize of bold on some particular sections of information.
4. I could use minimal tweaks and adjustments to align text as efficiently as possible according to the page layout of my theme. I think that following a specific theme should not alter the elements of text and design to make it abstract, being creative and original should be an effective process to creating a website that could appeal to the audience.
5. I will most likely use dark colors mainly because I think that bright colors will affect the audience by making visual effects less appealing. Dark colors can blend with the sight of the audience to the point where they are comfortable navigating the website.
6. I can ensure that my website is well designed by practicing how to integrate visual effects, animations, transitions, and images. I think that by adding some small elements of design and structure, the website should be that most appealing that it can be.
I would have to agree with you on the first website and the text looking as old as it did, being scattered around. I also think that your website is coming together nicely and does look professional with the background that you picked. It also looks very modern.
Since creating this website is the last assignment of the semester, I am so happy to finish!
In the process of creating my website, I must remember to use the five principles of design which are
1) CONTRAST- Design such as font style and size are different from one another.
2) CONSISTENCY- Making sure design is consistent and similar.
3) BALANCE- When images and text have equal weight, such as spreading out the content.
4) GROUPING- Keeping sets of like items on the same page and not scattered.
5) ALIGNMENT- Lining up elements on the page either vertically of horizontally.
Analyzing the first website http://trendlines.ca/
1) The balance of this website was not very laid out. On the left side there was a graph showing the USA Gasoline components and on the right side there were only as few as three bullet points of information making it unbalanced.
2) The contrast of this site is very dull in the background, and as far as the text colors, there are various amounts of contrast. It is difficult to read the graph since their is so many different colors going on.
3) There is not much consistency in the design. There are various colors of text in the graph that can be very distracting.
4) There is not proper text alignment in the text box. There is some text in the box’s that is diagonal and again can be a bit of a distraction.
5) Based on my analysis of the site, I now can use it as a tool and as a guide on what to avoid when creating my own website.
- The website http://www.aaronxmarquez.com/
1. I personally though that there was better balancing of this site than the last one. The reason for this was because the pictures and text were put better into proportion. While the picture was a little transparent, it was better to focus on the text, which was offset.
2) How is contrast employed on the site? The contrast of the website was very well organized. All text, images, and colors were well put into proportion which made it look very organized.
3) The sites use of consistency was on point because the design was consistent, he used only white and yellow for the font which is very simple and not to much for the audience.
4) Everything in this website was aligned and not scattered all over the place, which made it look organized.
5) My analysis on the design of the website was that it did have very good design to it. The website looked very professional, which is what I would like my website to look like.
Now that I have a better understanding now its time to outline my own website and how I want mine to look!
1. To be positive on what I would like my website to look like and make sure that it is well proportioned with images and text. Not to insert too many images or too much text but at the same time not to lack in those areas as well.
2. When creating my website, I will be sure to use the right colors, enough to catch the viewers attention, but not to distract them.
3. I will also be sure to be consistent, and keep my website short, but also organized.
4. Using alignment and grouping can make my website more effective because that’s what makes it look organized. As an example, in the first website, it was a mess.
5. The colors I plan to use for my website is mostly black and white because I think that’s what makes it look organized. I feel like color takes away from the text and objective.
6. Using the website guidelines, I know that my websites design and organization will be fine. I can ensure that my website is going to be well- designed because I am going to go over the website guidelines and go in depth to make sure I understand the directions. I know that if I have any questions, I will be sure to ask because I want my website to be in top shape.
Having analyzed what a good website looks like, I can use it as a guide to build my website.
I believe that everyone in my group have the right mindset for this project and that is positive. The positivity will go a long way. #RWS16 #1302FTW #TumTue16 #week13
This weeks tumblr post had 2 parts to in which as a group took a piece of them and split it up evenly between the 4 of us.
TOPIC : Hispanic Diversity in STEM
PURPOSE : To influence Hispanic middle school through college students to get involved in the STEM education.
AUDIENCE: Middle School - college students (13-24)
SOLUTION: Provide scholarships and educational programs for kids to raise the representation for Hispanics in STEM.
For my part of the group tumblr post was to come up with the solution to our issue with diversity in STEM.
The solution for the audience is to raise awareness with Diversity in STEM but to also apply themselves for the advocacy of diversity in stem. What I mean by applying is by actively searching and applying for scholarships. As well as to enroll in workshops regarding engineering.
ETHOS:
For the ethos portion I used the google search engine with the keywords of Scholarships for STEM, Engineering scholarships. From there I looked at various sites to determine their credibility and surprisingly enough there wasn’t a site in the first pages of the search that wasn’t a credible source The sites that I believe are the have the most credibility are the the ones ending in .org and .net as those sites are not out for profit.
PATHOS:
For the pathos portion I couldn’t really find notable quotes from the websites so I went to youtube to find videos regarding information with scholarships. Now I decided to o with international scholarships as well as workshops for engineers as we are in a border town and would like to promote internationally to further spread information as well as diversity. The workshop portion is for our younger audience so as a group we would like to get the youth involved with stem workshops and projects early.
LOGOS:
For the logos portions I went to a trusty website known as the NSF or the Nation Science Foundation to review their statistics regarding engineering and the percentages of each race and gender to have documentation of the research. As shown in the table below one can see that there is a huge gap in race and gender for the diversity.
ADVOCACY:
For the advocacy I went back to the same website and used this quote that went over the statistics in the figure and why the numbers were so far apart “ Male scientists and engineers employed in industry have higher levels of education than their female counterparts. Among scientists and engineers employed in industry, women are more likely than men to have a bachelor’s as their highest degree and men are more likely than women to have a doctoral degree. Black, Hispanic, and white scientists and engineers in industry have fairly similar educational attainment, but Asians, Asian men in particular, are more likely than any other group to have master’s or doctoral degrees (table 1). Compared with scientists and engineers without disabilities, those with disabilities are more likely to have a bachelor’s as their highest degree and are less likely to have a master’s as their highest degree. “
A long quote indeed but from the gist of the quote it shows that white males are more than likely and have held higher level engineering positions due to the fact that they simply hold higher level degrees and that other races are more than likely not to pursue a higher degree besides a BA in engineering.
Purpose: Influence women to pursue a career in Health Care field
Audience: Seeking a career in the health care field
Solution: To inform the audience about how they can close the gender gap
PART 2: Purpose
Ethos:
According to Dr. Dana D Brooks, “Today, America is witnessing a historical and dramatic shift in the ethnic minority population, particularly Hispanics and Asian Americans, and with it comes a comingling of social identities and citizenship.”
> “As recent as June 13, 2013, the US Census data revealed ethnic minority children under the age of five now make-up about 50% of that population” (Didymus, 2013).
> Didymus (2013) “summarized several points and presented Census Bureau’s 2013 report and noted non- Hispanic whites make-up 63% of Americans, Hispanics constitute 17%, blacks represent 12.3% of America’s population and Asians account for 5% of the population.”
> “ Given this projection, Hoover (2013) concluded minority students will account for 45% of the nation’s public high school graduates.”
The link provided below will explain the disadvantages of females in kinesiology
> “The “isms” and other institutional barriers continue to have a negative impact on the recruiting and retention of a diverse faculty, staff, and administrators” (Aguirre, Martinez, & Hernandez, 1993; Reid, 2012; Stanley, 2006).
With the lack of gender diversity in the health care field, gender disparities are more likely to occur. This means that the patients will have their own personal preferences.
Due to these gender disparities, it could create intimidation of the opposing gender to pursue a career in the healthcare field.
Logos:
According to Dr. Dana D Brooks, “ Increasing diversity in kinesiology allows for the perception of problems from multiple perspectives.”
In the image provided below, you can see that many professions lack in diversity, therefore affecting their problems solving skills.
SOLUTION:
By increasing educated women, they are more likely to go into the healthcare field. The following organizations help women achieve their academic goals
> Western Society for Physical Education of College Women
> American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education
NOW WHAT. Now that I am finished with this research, I am able to share my knowledge with fellow Hispanic students that may need the motivation to continue on with this major. I can also let them know that there are many helpful sources that they can use to their advantage. #1302FTW #TumTue16 #week11 #research
SO WHAT. Mostly everything I learned within the process of this lit review I thought was helpful because I can now use this research process assignments I will have in the future. Another thing I learned was important was that even though Hispanics are a minority and so underrepresented, there is still plenty of opportunity for me to succeed. After doing this research, it has given me the motivation to excel in my academics not only for myself but to prove people that look down on Hispanics wrong
WHAT. Throughout the semester, I have learned so much about my topic which is Hispanics in Kinesiology. I learned how much of an impact Hispanics can make in this field. Throughout the semester, I also learned how to properly do research and how to do it in depth. Although I felt that writing my Lit Review was a pain, it taught me patience and how with the right research questions, I could more easily find the information I was seeking.
By following the tumblr tuesday guidelines, I found the interview material folder and created my own interview request. Once I went over my request I sent it to my first contact of choice.
Second, I found the interview release form, read it, downloaded it, and saved it in my drop box.
Then I found and completed the drafting interview questions prompt.
Finally, I found, read, downloaded, and saved the interview confirmation document into my drop box.
The recording material I will use will be my camera on my phone and a pencil and notebook.
I thought that your email was well stated, specifically the three different time frames that you gave your scholar. I personally think that you're on your way to a good paper man!
