If you build it, they DON’T come...yet

Advice #1: Build an MVP (Minimal Viable Product) no matter the quality and get it out there.

Me: What if someone copies me? Everyone will see and judge my work in progress.

Rebuttal: Of the millions of people out there, who will see your website on page 2 or 3 of google and take the time to copy or judge you? ZERO or maybe one (But f* that one person).  

Humble pie slice: If you build it, they DON’T come. It’s true. I’m still irrelevant. (I screenshot my analytics page to prove it. The visitors were all my friends. HA! Whole first page is not even me, google thinks I mistyped my own business name)

Takeaway: Build your website as an MVP even if it’s just a homepage because then you can:

1.     Register it with google as soon as you can make a live website, so they can start crawling your content and you will organically move up the pages to get to the throne of the first page.

2.     Creativity begets creativity- the more you let it out, the more ideas will flow. Otherwise the same original idea just keeps circling.

3.     This is your time to let the  colors, design and content of your website simmer… why not do it when nobody is watching?  

4.     You can give your website a makeover every day and just ask choice people for feedback. It’s been day 30 and my home page has changed about 10 times. Cool part? NOBODY saw it!! haha

Chunkybrain.com might not have ever happened.

About a year ago, at lunch, I was talking about an idea with the one and only Jia Jiang (the rejection guy)

The convo went like this:

Jia: you should make it an app

me: but I want people to be off their phones

Jia: but the fact is people are on their phones all the time and it can be a resource too. Just think about it.  you need to get a domain name soon though

me: alright. I’ll think about it, won’t hurt to just look into it

That night I went on godaddy.com, every single f’n name that I wanted was taken. But I could buy it for a steal at $1500,  some names were $30,000 and up. F’ME!!!!!!

EXCEPT ONE was $12.99- CHUNKYBRAIN.COM (ya, baby)

I call Jia super excited: I got the domain name!!!! It’s chunkybrain!!!!

Jia: oh...um....well it can be a  placeholder name for now...you can always buy a better name later

FML!! I think the Rejection guy just rejected my domain name.

BUT guess what?! The more I said Chunkybrain, the more I liked it. I decided to do some impromptu a/b testing and asked more people what comes to mind when they hear chunkybrain.  Most responses consisted of

“I like how Chunky means something good when paired with brain,”

“makes me think of a really smart brain that’s growing”

When I told them Chunkybrain was going to have focused meditation mp3 streaming and downloads to help people find relief from everyday shit...I think I won them over.

So now my idea has evolved into building a website and an app, next blog will be about some tough decisions I had to make
